owa’s most famous artist, Grant Wood, drew one of the most recognizable images in 20th-century American art in his Cedar Rapids art studio.
The images are again springing to life for a celebration of what would have been Wood’s 125th birthday. A collection of 25 life-size statues will be on display now through Septem-ber. The statues depict the farmer and daughter from the American Gothic painting, drawn at his 5 Turner Alley studio in Cedar Rapids.
The newest creations of the duo were made at Chicago Fiberglass Works. The roughly six-
foot-tall statues weigh around 90 pounds with-out the cement bases. Local artists spent weeks putting their own spin on Wood’s artistry, using paint, images and other materials to add another layer of depth to iconic characters.
The creations – dubbed Overalls All Over for the clothing Wood frequently worked in – require close-up views to see unique details on the backs, while others have added details that can only be noticed with a close-up view.
Wood was born on a farm near Anamosa in 1891 and moved to Cedar Rapids at around age 10, following the death of his father. Wood called
Cedar Rapids home until his death in 1942.
This summer’s public art celebration is a fitting tribute for Wood, who spent his career speaking of the value of art and the importance for artists to be inspired by their own surroundings.
Overalls All Over is an effort between Go Cedar Rapids, Black Earth Gallery and Czech Village New Bohemia Main Street. Addi-tional project updates can be found online at www.croveralls.com.
