There are a lot of thingsthat can demand your timeand MONEY. With a littleplanning and a CornerstoneDemand Certificate, youcan make these resource-draining events a bit easierto manage.I have 5 kids, 2 in high school,2 in junior high and a very active3 year old. All participate in sports,school and youth group, exceptthe 3 year old, she’s just active.You can’t play pick up sportsanymore. No, no, you have to beon a team, whether through a parkdistrict or club affiliation. Playingcompetitive sports today comeswith a price.If you own a home you willeventually have to paint or replacesomething and if you’re like meyou will try to do as much of thepainting or replacing yourself tosave a few bucks, even if it takesyou 8 months to remodel youronly bathroom with a shower. Iown a couple of cars and we tryand keep up the maintenance asmuch as possible but eventuallysomething more expensive to dealwith, like a water pump explosionwhile on vacation in Ohio, willhappen. Medical expense isanother area of significant
expense in most householdbudgets. My five kids, they allhave teeth! For a period of about2 hrs a couple years ago we had4 kids in braces, one was gettingthem removed the same dayanother had them attached.This may explain why the doctoralways smiles when he sees us.Every once in a while when ourkids are not involved in somethingand I’m not painting or replacingsomething, we like to take avacation. The best vacation we’vetaken by far was a cruise we tookas a family. That one took us awhile to save for but it was wellworth it. The Cornerstone Fundand a not-too-complicated Excelspreadsheet helped make iteasier for us.The Demand Certificate offeredby the Fund is a very convenientway for us to save for all typesof expenses. Coincidently, as I’mwriting this I get a note that my#2 daughter just cost me $107 atAmerican Eagle. I guess school isabout to start. No worries, I haveit in my CSF Demand Certificate.I’ll just request a check.Here’s what we do. My wifeand I will sit down every year (atminimum) and think through whatwe need to save for. We divide the
cost of the item by the numberof months until the “piper willcome calling.” We add up all themonthly numbers and have thattotal amount taken out of our bankaccount through the automaticdeposit feature, offered by theFund. This is put right into ourCornerstone Fund DemandCertificate which currently yields2%. We track the amount savedfor each item in a simple spreadsheet. Then, when one of mydaughters needs a pair of jeans,my wife changes her mind oncolor, or the property tax billcomes we request anothercheck for some of our money.
We have tried to set an amountfor the unexpected things thatcome along as well. This hashelped to lessen the blow ofthe unexpected. While themoney is sitting in our DemandCertificate we are partneringwith the churches of ConvergeWorldwide through the ministryof the Cornerstone Fund.We have found that this simpleprocess minimizes worry overmanaging the cost of planned/unplanned expenditures thusfreeing us up to ponder moreimportant things like…whatcolor to paint the powder room.
