parallel to the highway in a northeast direction. The tornado crossed County Road 1 where another corridor of significant tree damage was observed. Just
to the north, a shed was overturned and blown to the southeast. From here, the tornado continued northeast where structure damage was observed near
Highway 33. Various farm buildings sustained significant damage and at least one residence sustained roof damage (winds estimated at 100 mph). Damage
became more sporadic in nature and less severe northeast of this location, though another brief corridor of EF1 damage was observed near the
intersection of Shady Lane and US Highway 231, where numerous trees were snapped and uprooted. After crossing Highway 231, the tornado continued

An upper-level low over the southwest United States evolved into a negatively-tilted shortwave trough as it moved over the
southeastern United States. A warm front steadily moved northward during the morning and afternoon hours on Sunday, April 12. This
allowed an unstable air mass to move northward and overspread much of the region. At the same time, very strong wind shear
developed over Alabama as the upper trough neared the state.
An initial wave of severe storms affected areas near and north of Interstate 20, involving tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds, and
some hail. Through the evening, a second wave of thunderstorms affected the remaining areas of Central Alabama with tornadoes and
damaging straight-line winds. Flooding also resulted from training rainfall near and north of Interstate 20. Some roads became
impassible or were washed out. This weather event was large in scope and produced severe weather from Oklahoma and Texas,
through the southeastern United States, then up the east coast to New York.

A low-amplitude trough affected the Gulf Coast region April 19th with Central Alabama impacts consisting of two significant straight-line
wind events (resulting in injuries), with other storms producing large hail and flash flooding. This activity was mainly focused south of
Interstate 20.
During the morning of the 19th, a warm front was located along the immediate Gulf Coast, placing all of Central Alabama in an
environment consisting of a stable low-level air mass; however, there was plenty of wind shear & instability aloft to support the
development of elevated thunderstorms (some severe) associated with a lead impulse. After a midday break, a second round occurred
late afternoon through the evening hours as the warm front struggled to move northward.

Two waves of severe weather occurred on April 23rd, one during the early morning hours and another in the afternoon. The first event
was characterized by a stable low level air mass, with strong shear and moderate instability aloft. A wake low or gravity wave
developed within or near the back edge of a rain shield, and produced wind damage. Clearing across west Alabama allowed for
destabilization of the air mass and a line of severe storms developed across southwest Alabama.

Tornado (EF2, L: 2.76 mi , W: 440 yd)04/12/20 17:22 CST
04/12/20 17:25 CST Source: NWS Storm Survey
The tornado continued from Etowah County west of Highway 431, south of Denson Avenue. It quickly intensified to its peak strength as it crossed Highway
431 and plowed through a neighborhood north of Roden Road. Nearly every single home (dozens) in this neighborhood experienced some degree of
damage. The most intense damage was noted from two separate single family homes. The first home, with the most devastating damage, was completely
destroyed and was mostly taken off its foundation with only two small interior rooms remaining, where the residents took shelter. It was noted however
that the anchorage system for the home appeared to be non-existent with no bolts observed to the foundation crawl space piers. The second heavily
damaged home on Lee Avenue, experienced a collapse of exterior walls, likely occurring after the roof was taken off. The tornado continued on an east to
northeast track across and along Bethsaida Road causing numerous trees to snapped or be uprooted. Several houses appeared to have had shingle roof
damage. The tornado continued into DeKalb County.

High Wind (MAX 52 kt)04/23/20 05:00 CST
04/23/20 07:00 CST
A 'wake low' pressure area developed at the back end of rainfall that had moved east through north Alabama and southern middle
Tennessee during the evening hours. This wave increased winds from near calm to over 40 mph between Midnight LST and 2 AM LST,
but no damage reports were received. Another "wake low" occurred between 5 and 7 AM LST in north central into northeast Alabama.
This also resulted in a similar increase in winds with gusts of 40 mph or higher. The second event resulted in several trees being
knocked down or uprooted, some onto power lines, across portions of north central and northeast Alabama. It is possible that the
combination of both wind events could have resulted in the number of reports received after the second wave of gusty winds.

Strong winds blew part of a structure into a utility pole on Waddell Road.
The combination of steep mid level lapse rates, an upper trough, and significant low level moisture with dewpoints in the 70s
contributed to significant instability across the area. Thunderstorms produced several instances of large hail and wind damage across
portions of southeast Alabama and southwest Georgia.

Storm Data and Unusual Weather Phenomena - April 2020
A tornado touched down just to the northwest of County Road 70
and traveled approximately one and a quarter of a mile towards
the southeast. The tornado rapidly intensified after touchdown
and produced EF-2 damage. A stand of pine trees were snapped
near the bases with no tree left undamaged. The tornado then
widened and severely damaged a duplex, sweeping it from its
foundation with portions of the debris lofted across C.R. 70
approximately 75 yards away. The duplex did not have proper
anchoring to the slab. A nearby concrete block workshop was
also destroyed with the roof removed and 26 foot high concrete
block walls toppled. A storage unit to the south was also
completely destroyed. This damage was assessed as EF-2 tornado
intensity.
Across C.R. 70, another single family home was significantly
damaged. Large portions of the roof were removed along with
partial wall failure. Doors and windows were blown in at the
home. This damage was assessed as EF-1 intensity.
The tornado continued southeastward and heavily damaged
another stand of mixed softwood and hardwood trees, with many
of them snapped either near the base or one quarter of the
way up. This damage was assessed as EF-2 tornado intensity.
Immediately beyond the tree damage was a metal garage building
where the roof was partially removed and a complete wall was
ripped off.
The tornado traveled farther southeast through a wooded area
and came out into a pasture where it severely damaged and
destroyed 4 large chicken houses. The chicken house walls were
bolted into the foundation and were completely removed in
several locations. This tornado damage was assessed at EF-2
intensity.
The tornado began to weaken as it crossed Harmony Church Road
and dissipated just to the southeast where trees were snapped
and uprooted just prior to the end of the tornado track. EF-1
damage was assessed prior to tornado dissipation.
