Background
GTU Central TechFest 2016, organized by Gujarat Technological University, GTU Innovation Council and
Vishwakarma Government Engineering College in association with L. D. College of Engineering and L. M.
College of Pharmacy was held at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda on 11th and
12th of March. Hack-a-thon being the highlight of this summit was organized as a pre-event for the
coding geeks to participate for 30 straight hours day and night. 20 teams consisting of 100 coders
participated in the event. Total 12,000 students visited the TechFest.
Aim of the Hack-a-thon was to solve problems. Multiple IT companies in Ahmedabad were approached
to search for various problems and 10 problems were identified. These problems were given to the
engineering students. Student teams were given the freedom to solve problems that they already had.
Moreover emphasis was also given to social problems like Women Empowerment, Traffic Sense etc.
Industry experts evaluated the Apps and Web-based applications made by the students in
this event. Teams belonged from the colleges of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Modasa and other cities from all
over the state.
In Hackathon 2016, students came together to build amazing solutions like applications and web-
portal, in an effort to create amazing solutions for real world challenges. Participants developed
prototypes as a solution for Traffic Issues, Smart Healthcare Challenges, Social Goods and
Industry Challenges.
The three teams that were selected by the jury for developing below mentioned best prototypes,
namely:
1. Interest Based Tweets Application (Windows App)
2. Twags Application
3. Interest Based Facebook Group Suggestion App
Any many others teams developed various prototypes, including the Social Impact-able solutions
like Smart Waste Collection System using IOT based App and Smart Health-care
Systems. Many of these prototype developers want to develop it further for implementable real product
such as the "RuleBook App - For Traffic Issue" & "Interest based Tweets App- As a commercial
product".

Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, Hon. Vice Chancellor of GTU said that the tagline of the TechFest is ‘Ideate To
Innovate’ as many new and innovative events have been introduced. The participation was
approximately from a large number of colleges from across the state. This time knowledge boosting
events such as GTU Conclave, Entre’Sum – The Entrepreneurial Summit, Hack-a-thon were
introduced. In the Robotics Section, Robocon an international event had been introduced along with
Robocopter and Hydrobot. He added that GTU is considered as a benchmark for technological
universities. A University is tested every day in its laboratories and class-rooms. It is only the excellence
achieved by our students, researchers and Faculty Members, in their work that can make the University
great. This requires hard work, this requires dedication and commitment by the management and this
demands continuous and disciplined work from the students. Giving a few examples of GTU’s work, he
said that GTU has introduced Design Thinking in syllabus and presently 80,000 students are studying it.
We have also started School of Smart Cities in which training has been given to municipal officers of 8
states.

Dr. Rajul Gajjar, Principal of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College said that this is the first
time that an event of this scale and variation has been organized in the state. An unprecedented number
of 70 Start-ups have already registered. In a state which is proud of its entrepreneurial abilities, such
young minds, some of whom are still studying, are very happy to have been given this opportunity. Once
again, it is the first of its kind with such a large number of cross country entries. She further added that
GTU has planned 100 activity points programme, which includes points for participation in such
programmes. Moreover the TechFest has competition of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), which is Amateur
Formula One race. 30 ATVs from across the country are participating. The prize money worth
more than 1 lac in this event is the boost which creates the adrenaline rush in the contestants.
Smt. D. Thara, Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad announced that Ahmedabad Municipal
Corporation will support up to 5 lakh rupees if any student creates any application that helps to solve
traffic congestion problem and other local problems. Subsequently, AMC is also thinking to organize a
hack-a-thon for making Ahmedabad a Smart City. She said that reality most often differs from what we
actually know. Whenever we try any idea it must suit with local environment. India is a beautiful country
with beautiful opportunities. So students should change their perception and observe near you. There is
need for networking of institutions.

Dr. Sudhir Jain, Director, IIT Gandhinagar said on the occasion that nowadays students are much
smarter than old people. Earlier knowledge was controlled through books, but now we have Wi-Fi age.
Event like TechFest gives student attitude and values. He advised students to think differently and
inclusively.
Dr. Sunil Shukla, Director of EDI said that thousands of ideas are generated, but if it is helpful to
society, then only the aim of such TechFest will be fulfilled. India will now become number 1 in
Entrepreneurs movement. Similar movement was started in Gujarat in the year 1969. Prime Minister Shri.
Narendra Modi has given the slogan of Start-up India, Stand-up India. We are now using Start up India
slogan for new entrepreneurs, while Stand up India for existing entrepreneurs. EDI recently organized
entrepreneurship fair and have received encouraging response.
