SUCCESS AT PRIMARY ZONE SWIMMING With perfect conditions for a day by the pool the Coonabarabran Zone Swimming Carnival held in Binnaway last Friday was a huge success and a most enjoyable day for all. The four schools; Binnaway, Coonabarabran, Coolah and Sacred Heart fielded strong teams and it was a good day of friendly competition. The 19 Mendooran students swam very well to achieve many personal best times even if they didn’t win their race and displayed positive sportsmanship throughout the day. Our best results included: Emma Bennetts- 1st Junior 50m Backstroke, 1st Junior 200m Medley and 1st Junior 50m Butterfly; all of which earned Emma the overall Junior Girl Age Champion. Well done Emma! Well done girls! Compliments go to both students and parents for such a successful day. THANK YOU to all parents providing transport for their children and others and for assistance in organising the children into their races. Homework centre As we have stated a few times in past newsletters The school is running a homework centre this year on Wednesday afternoons. This is held in the computer room from the end of school until 5:00pm. Mr Neal will be running the Homework Centre, however if Mr Neal is absent another staff member will fill in to ensure continuity of the program. I was in the homework centre last Wednesday and it was great to see some students, particularly our younger students already taking up the opportunity to use the school resources and have some support from teachers to complete their work. I commend these students and thank their parents for going out of their way to change the pick up time for their children so that this could happen. I am presuming that once assessment tasks start flowing in for the high school students their uptake will increase. Professional Learning On Saturday 19th March, our staff will be involved in a professional learning day looking at the concept and implications of individual learning styles. I stated earlier in the year that this would be open to any parents who are interested in the topic. If you intend on participating, please contact the school office soon as a short questionnaire will need to be filled out one week prior to the professional learning day. Fence approval Some of you would know that we started to apply for a new fence to be built around the school around a year ago. I am happy to announce that although the process has taken a while, we have received approval for this late last week. We thank the DET for this and look forward to its construction in the next couple of months. Pavers for sale The engraved pavers that have been for sale over the past months have been well received with many people already purchasing them for their family or for individual members of their family. These pavers will be placed at the front entrance of the school, which will look spectacular with our new fence. We will be sending these orders off early next term, so if you are contemplating ordering one please do so this term. Yr 9 Laptops On Tuesday evening our Year 9 students received their laptop computers. These are a fantastic resource enabling our students and classes to be at the cutting edge of technology application and resource retrieval. I remind all three year levels who have been allocated computers that they must be brought to school every day fully charged. Classes are designed to operate presuming that all students have their computers; if this is not the case then the learning opportunity is demised for either that student or the whole class. I will be absent from this afternoon until Wednesday attending the Western NSW Principal’s conference on Dubbo. I thank Mrs Peter and Mrs Waters for the additional responsibility they take on, as well as carrying out their own role during this time.

KINDERGARTEN/YEAR 1 NEWS Kindergarten students will be learning the sounds “h” and “r“ this week. Don’t forget to read home readers nightly and practice sounds. Year 1 are learning about writing descriptions. This week we will write a description of Mrs Reynolds. I hope they are kind to me. In HSIE we will discuss when our birthdays are and how we celebrate them. We have been discussing how we are the same and how we are different. Students have made a ME doll and they will be displayed at this years show. As a class we have discussed how we need rules to allow everyone to live and work the best they can in our classroom. We have decided on the following rules: • Keep your hands and feet to yourself. • Hands up if you want to say something. • Listen when others are talking. • Say nice things to others. Each week we look at another social skill while constantly revising previous lessons about turn taking and sharing. Students use these skills during all aspects of the day. The Best Start Parent Information letters will be going home this week. If you have any questions please ring to make a time to meet. S Reynolds

YEAR 4/5/6 NEWS Last week we continued our work on ‘Persuasive Language’ and most of the children are demonstrating a sound understanding of this text type. Today we will be doing an activity using some of the more common and effective connectives. Ask your child about this when they come home this afternoon. We will also be presenting this work in an oral presentation to the class. In Maths we will be focused on “Measurement” and specifically we will be estimating lengths and then checking our predictions. Our HSIE/COGS unit on government is progressing well. Thank you to all those mums and dads who helped their children gather information to present to the class. Cheers. G Davis

PRIMARY GENERAL ZONE Swimming Carnival - Binnaway Congratulations to all Primary students who travelled to Binnaway last Friday to compete in the Zone Swimming Carnival. Uniform The uniform standard continues to be outstanding. All students look extremely neat and well presented and this in turn has created a great sense of pride and good sportsmanship amongst our students. Year 2 Writing Enrichment Session While the Year 3 & 4 students have been focusing on writing persuasive texts with Miss Yeo & Mrs Young in the LANE program, the Year 2 students have been participating in a Writing Enrichment Session with Mrs Peter. The students are being taught and encouraged to use skills and techniques that will make their writing easier, more enjoyable and rewarding for them as well as making it more appealing to the reader. For example, instead of writing “A big dog chased after the black cat” it could become “In the dimly-lit laneway a huge, hairy dog bounded after the terrified, scrawny black cat.” Library Bags Many students are still not using library bags to borrow books. This is strongly recommended to protect our library books. Library bags are available for $3:50 at the school office, Library books may be borrowed or returned during Library periods (days listed below) or during any second-half lunch period. SECONDARY NEWS

SECONDARY PDHPE 7/8 PDHPE Following on from last week students will be busy composing persuasive expositions exploring the challenges adolescents face in 2001 in comparison to 50 years; exploring whether they really have it easier today then teenagers did back then. So parents if you have an opinion please let your children know we’d love to have you involved. In practical lessons students will complete the last of their cricket unit with an assessment of skills Thursday during class. 9/10 PDHPE Students through the study of challenges adolescence face have been exploring stress and anger in class looking closely at development of strategies to increase resilience. Their homework comprising of a persuasive letter written to the principal advocating a motivational speaker with a winning attitude is due this Tuesday. Students will commence their new unit on Gymnastics later this week. D Althofer

SECONDARY NORTH WEST SSA SWIMMING As a result of qualifying times no secondary students will attend the 2011 NWSSA Swimming Trials in Armidale. Stronger preparation for the carnival will commence in Term 4 for 2012. D Althofer

10% ON TOP PROGRAMME Last Friday saw the first of the School Certificate extension lessons for Science. The turnout was a little bland; however, the quality of the lesson was great. We looked at how to deconstruct a multiple choice question to answer it to the maximum effectiveness. This may sound absurd, but there are 4 tips to making sure MCQ’s are answered fully: • CAREFULLY READ THE QUESTION! Twice! • Underline the key parts of the question and cross out any unessential text. • Cross out any answers that are nonsensical straight away. • When you’ve decided on an answer, ask yourself: “Would I say this if asked directly?” Lastly, I don’t know about exam writers for the Board of Studies, but I know of the old “when in doubt pick C” saying and I make sure most of my answers are A, B and D when I write exams, just to be tricky. I hope to see more participation from Year 10 students, and Year 9 students are reminded they are most welcome to attend Room 9 at 8.30am on Friday mornings. B Bearman

FROM THE STUDENTS What matters?

If you could change one thing in this world what would it be? My name is Kirsty Evans. I am 12 years of age. The most important things to me are the same as any 12 year old. Our families, friends, education but most of all what will become of us? I also care about our world. What would you rather? A nice clean big happy world or a big round lump in the atmosphere currently known as earth. I would prefer option one but it’s not up to just me to decide. If we all work together we won’t have twenty holes in the ozone layer or people living on the street. “One for all and all for one”. Another idea that comes to mind when discussing this topic is the amount of food supermarkets waste. I feel it would be enough to feed the homeless and the poor. That would help to make poverty history. The world would be a better place if there was less or absolutely no violence whatsoever. It would allow the people of earth to be a much happier race. This would also prevent humanity from making itself extinct! A child sits around and witnesses what goes on around them. They absorb the majority of it and it often leads to that child growing up to do the same things that they have observed in their childhood. What do you think makes a teenager take a weapon to school to start a riot with their poor, innocent and helpless peers? They probably grew up in an environment of violence and abuse. This is not the way we want our children to be brought up! Is it? We all NEED to work together and make this world a harmless place for all. Then everyone would die happily. Now imagine, imagine the world without these problems! It would be a much better place. Don’t you think? Just like Bob the Builder says “working together gets the job done”. There are so many things in life and very little time to fix them all. It is going to take generation after generation to keep this world going. I wish we could stop the clock, find all of these problems fix them then start the clock again ready for a new beginning. Then the world could keep moving forward! Then we can live happily ever after. You have come to the conclusion of this exposition. I hope you enjoyed reading it!

What matters? That is a very hard question to answer! There are a great many things that matter: friends, family, animals, books. Books. Books matter to me. Books are like gateways to a whole other dimension. A different world. Books give me comfort. Help me to relax, leave the world behind, without leaving at all. Books are used to do different things: some for studying, most for leisure. Other people might think books are old and boring with no colour or pictures, but that is only because we are old enough to understand how to use the descriptive language and our imagination to create a picture. When we are young we can’t read well enough to create an image and that in my opinion is why small children have colourful picture filled books. I get mixed emotions from books. These emotions vary from the books I’m reading. When I read books I cry, I smile, I get scared, I laugh out loud. Imagine a world without books, a world without books would be hard on many people. Firstly, for some children it would be hard to do their homework and assignments, because, they may not have access to computers, printers and the internet, therefore, it would be hard to do research topics. That’s where books come in. You can borrow books from the libraries, or you may have some in your own home that is related to this topic. Secondly, many people would lose their jobs without books. The authors, the illustrators, the editors, the printers and the bookstore merchants. That is quite a lot of people if you ask me. Before we had computers and technology we used books to record important events, if those people hadn’t recorded all of those events we wouldn’t know what the ancient Egyptians learnt at school or what Hitler was thinking while the war was raging. I love the smell of books. New books smell clean, and fresh, and like they have never been looked at before, but I do not like the smell of old books. They smell like dirt and old men without deodorant on. But that's just my opinion, not everybody has to like the things I like or hate the things I hate. Everybody has their own opinion and my opinion is that books matter. By Shanoa Hartley

PINK STUMPS DAY - McGRATH FOUNDATION On Saturday, 26th March 2011, Mendooran hosted it’s first pink stumps day. The day was a great success with all monies going to the McGrath Foundation. There were many families and locals enjoying a great day of cricket. The first game started around 12:30pm with the final game ending around 7pm. There was some really good cricket, crazy cricket and very funny cricket played. I don’t think there was anyone who didn’t enjoy the day. Thank you to everyone who wore something pink, you all looked great. Thank you to the spectators, to the businesses who donated prizes for the raffles, everyone who worked in the tent and sold raffle tickets. The cricket club is going to hold this event annually for this worthy cause. Once again thank you everyone for your attendance, this day would not have been successful without your support. Mostly a huge thank you to Greg and Annette Haron who were instrumental in kick starting this event and to Tony Haron, the Royal Hotel, Mendooran Cricket Club for your support and thank you to Mendooran Central School for the use of the toilets. At the crease. Craig Devlin

MENDOORAN/MERRYGOEN AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB Firstly, congratulations to those that have made it away to Armidale – what an achievement! Thanks to all the mums and dads for helping with starting, timekeeping and scoring last Friday. This week will be our last pointscore, so your last chance to rack up some points. As usual, we will be looking for volunteers on the day to help with starting, timekeeping and scoring. On 11th March we will be having a pointscore party with some games, hotdogs and treats. This is just a fun afternoon to finish off the pointscore season, so no official racing will actually take place – just fun, so make sure you all wear your fun hats for this day. The following week on 18th March we will have our presentation day and then free time in the pool. All those with perpetual trophies, can you please return ASAP. words.

The purpose of a newsletter is to provide specialized infor-mation to a targeted audi-ence. Newsletters can be a great way to market your product or service, and also create credibility and build your organization’s identity among peers, members, em-

ployees, or vendors.

First, determine the audience of the newsletter. This could be anyone who might benefit from the information it con-tains, for example, employees or people interested in pur-chasing a product or request-

ing your service.

You can compile a mailing list from business reply cards, customer information sheets, business cards collected at trade shows, or membership lists. You might consider pur-chasing a mailing list from a

company.

If you explore the Publisher catalog, you will find many publications that match the

style of your newsletter.

Next, establish how much time and money you can spend on your newsletter. These factors will help deter-mine how frequently you publish the newsletter and its length. It’s recommended that you publish your newsletter at least quarterly so that it’s considered a consistent source of information. Your customers or employees will

look forward to its arrival.
