Training Dates
• Phase 0: 09 May – 22 May• Phase 1: 25 May – 19 June• Phase 2: 22 June – 17 July• Phase 3: 20 July – 14 August
• CORTRAMID West: 20 May – 20 June
• MWTC: 13 July – 23 July
• OCS I: 25 May – 3 July• OCS II: 5 July – 15 Aug
Training Dates
• When will I know where/when I am going?– 2-4 weeks prior to departure at the earliest
Objectives of Summer Training
• Professional development by exposure to the operational Navy and Marine Corps
• Reinforce academic training
• Aid service assignment decision making
Prior to leaving UW
• May 5-8 (Tues-Fri) 1500-1600, see Sarah– Medical & Dental Records– Sign travel vouchers– Contact card
– Review Summer Training Handbook– NROTC/battalion/events/summer_training
– Print and take Cruise Guide (1/C, 2/C, etc)– NROTC/battalion/events/summer_training
2-4 weeks Before Departure
• You will receive an email with:– Official Orders– Travel itinerary– POC on host ship– Any supplementary instructions
• Review dates and locations to make sure they make sense. Sarah and I are human and errors happen.
Day of Departure
• MUST check-in to your flight prior to showing up at the airport– Do this 24 hours in advance to ensure your
flight is on time
• Travel Attire:– INCONUS & Hawaii: PCA (have Summer
Whites in your carry-on)– OCONUS & Mountain Warfare & OCS: PCA
Day of Departure (cont.)
• Show orders to get free extra checked baggage– No reimbursement for baggage fees
• Travel by POV is only authorized within 200mi
• Must receive unit approval
• Fly to/from training via home of record or UW
Changing You Flight
• Minor changes: missed flight, delayed flight, etc– Work with the airline directly– If same price than change ticket and inform LT
Peterson and training location POC– If increase in price, call Sarah to get a new ticket
• Major changes: different airport, different date– Call Sarah
• Procedure stated on the contact card
Things to Take
• All items from seabag inventory checklist• Medical & Dental records• 2 copies of orders• Travel itinerary• Military ID• Passport• Civilian clothes (collared shirts/long pants/belts)
• Pack light – shipboard space is limited• No hard shell luggage
Hand Carry Items
• 2 copies of Orders• Medical & Dental records• Military ID• Passport• Uniform of the day
At Final Destination
• Your host ship will pick you up
• If they don’t show:– Call the Midshipman Embarkation and
Debarkation Team (MEDT)– If they can’t be reached call LT Peterson
Prior to Departing from Summer Training
• Have orders endorsed– Normal part of transfer
• Destroy classified material
After Return Home
• Post-Cruise survey– Mandatory– Link posted on the unit website– Email me once complete
• Keep endorsed orders and give to Sarah fall semester
• Scan/fax/email to the Unit– Receipts for emergency lodging– If government meals were not available:
• Statement of non-availability
Misc
• Do not wear midshipmen ribbons or midshipmen officer rank insignia (may wear midshipmen rank: 1/C, 2/C, 3/C, etc)
• The Navy is paying for your meals. Do not pay for meals except while on liberty. You will be eating on a ship or the base mess hall.
• If your clothing is not properly marked (name tape or stencil), if may not be returned from the ship’s laundry
• Classified information: don’t take notes, don’t talk about it afterwards

• Incorrect:– yea/yup/okay– Hands in pockets
• “Very well” is reserved for officers when receiving a report from a subordinate

• Boarding a ship– Salute the National Ensign half way across the brow– Salute the OOD “Sir/Ma’am I request permission to

• Departing– Salute the OOD “Sir/Ma’am I request permission to
leave the ship.”– Show military ID– Salute the National Ensign half way across the brow
• When not covered, come to attention facing the National Ensign instead
Naval Etiquette
• Wardroom: a room where the officers take their meals, relax, and socialize.
• Uncover when in the wardroom• Do not set your cover on the table• If officers already eating, ask the senior officer “request
to join the mess Sir”

• Saluting– You are required to salute all officers– Return all salutes from enlisted members
• Colors/Taps– Occurs at 0800 and at sunset– If outside: come to attention, face the flag (or
direction of music if unknown) and salute if in uniform
Fraternization is Prohibited
• Definition: Any personal relationship between a midshipman and an officer or enlisted member which is unduly familiar and does not respect differences in rank and grade resulting in:– Favoritism– Preferential treatment– Personal gain
• Involves actions which may reasonably be expected to undermine good order, discipline, authority, or high unit morale
Fraternization (cont.)
• Social interaction with officers and enlisted is expected and necessary to complete training goals
• DO NOT:• Go on a date• Sexual intimacy• Private business partnership• Participate in social networking (Facebook, Twitter, texting)• Use first names
• DO:• Go on liberty with your running mate, but remain in groups to
avoid one-on-one situation• Be friendly, just not friends
Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection
• Your clothing, haircut, luggage, mannerisms identify you are a military member– Increased likelihood of being targeted
• Domestic and foreign groups seek out military members for:– Military intelligence– Valuable hostage– To do harm

• Recent terrorist events– 2001 trans-Atlantic flight shoe-bomber– 2007 Glasgow International Airport– 2007 plot against JFK Airport

• Minimize ability to identify you– Don’t wear uniform or military items while
traveling or liberty– Don’t wear USA identifying clothing while
overseas

• Reduce your exposure– Select an airplane window seat– Do not go to off-limits areas (bars/clubs/city
blocks)– Keep luggage in sight at all times– Keep drink in sight at all times

• Remaining 20% will be paid once your travel voucher is approved
