Presta’s Por co Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) The following gospel reflec on (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23) is taken from the website of Loyola Press. This Sunday, our lec onary returns to Mark’s Gospel a er a number of Sundays in which we heard the Bread of Life discourse from the Gospel of John. Recall that we focus on the Gospel of Mark in Lec onary Cycle B, but subs tute John’s report of the mul plica on of the loaves and fishes for Mark’s report of this event.
In today’s Gospel, Mark provides a significant amount of informa on about the Jewish observance of ritual-purity laws. Most scholars believe that Mark includes this informa on because his audience includes Gen le Chris ans who have no knowledge or experience of these laws. We can infer, therefore, that many in Mark’s community were not Jewish Chris ans.
In this Gospel, Mark addresses the ques on of which Jewish prac ces would also be observed in the newly emerging Chris an community. This was a significant ques on for the early Chris an Church, especially in communi es that included both Jewish and Gen le converts to Chris anity. We also hear this ques on addressed in the le ers of Paul with regard to table fellowship. In Gospel passages such as the one today, we see the Gospel evangelists finding jus fica on for a Chris an prac ce dis nct from Judaism in the remembrances of Jesus’ teaching and the prac ce of his first disciples.
Jesus first cri cizes the Pharisees for pu ng human tradi on above God’s Law. Here, Jesus is referring to the tradi on of the elders, the teachings of the Pharisees, which extended the ritual-purity laws of Temple worship to everyday Jewish life. Jesus cri cizes the Pharisees for making this tradi on equal to and as binding as the Law of Moses.
Next, Jesus comments on the meaning behind the Pharisees’ language of holiness—clean and unclean. Jesus teaches that a person is not defiled by the food that enters his or her body, but rather by sin that emerges from his or her words and ac ons. In this teaching, Jesus unmasks a deeper ques on behind the one posed to him by the Pharisees. The real issue is holiness, which is not found in external acts alone. Holiness comes from within and is evidenced in the ac ons and a tudes that emerge from a person’s life.
If we read today’s Gospel carefully, we will see a pa ern in Jesus’ teaching method that will be repeated in the weeks ahead. Jesus’ first teaching is directed to the Pharisees who ques oned him. Jesus’ words are then directed to the crowd, teaching that a person is defiled by his or her words and ac ons, not by the food that he or she eats. In verses omi ed in today’s reading, we learn that Jesus returned home with his disciples, who in turn ques oned him about what he had taught. The words we read at the conclusion of today’s Gospel are addressed to Jesus’ disciples. Mark’s narra ve shows several audiences for Jesus’ teaching: his antagonists, the crowds, and Jesus’ disciples. As we see in this reading, the words to the Pharisees are o en words of challenge. The teaching to the crowds is o en a general, some mes cryp c, message. With the disciples, who o en misunderstand Jesus’ words, further explana on is offered about his message and its meaning.
Jesus’ words challenge us as well. In our desire to show that we are holy, we might also give too much credence to externals, following rules without thinking about the inten on behind them. Jesus reminds us that we do not make ourselves holy by our ac ons. Rather, we become holy when we allow God’s Spirit to transform us. Our ac ons should be an expression of the conversion of our heart to God and to God’s ways.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
St. Joseph, the Terror of Demons, you may have seen this picture already in our ves bule. It is both a striking image of St. Joseph and an even more striking tle of St. Joseph. On the topic of evil in the world there is a lot to be said. Free Will allows people to choose evil; there is tempta on, etc.
Reflec ng on the tle given to St. Joseph, let’s examine why St. Joseph causes terror in demons and all things pertaining to evil. For one, look at the virtuous and pure heart of St. Joseph. He is a er all just a man but his heart was formed in virtue and holiness. How could it not when
he lived every day in the presence of Our Lady and Blessed Lord?
Virtue, then, is not only a good and holy prac ce to ins ll in us the wisdom to live rightly, but it is also protec on from tempta on. Is it not every super villain’s worse nightmare when he realizes he cannot corrupt the heart of the hero with something like riches and power?
Virtues such as chas ty, temperance and purity of mind are like the lilies held by the Child Jesus in the picture. In eyes of the world they are weak and so ; something to disdain. Yet, in the eyes of the true enemy, evil, they are like a sharp staff that pierces the hide of the dragon. Hold onto Christ, like St. Joseph, and He will ins ll in you His virtues to overcome the world. Ite ad Joseph!
From the Lyon's Den
An Update on Liam Anderson Liam’s had an even ul summer. Early on we had the best news ever a er Liam’s bone marrow test revealed no sign of any leukemia cells, for the first me since Liam’s diagnosis last summer. It was such a blessing to know the chemo is really working! Round 5 of the final 6 is planned for this week.
Liam also spent a lot of me this summer catching up on missed schoolwork to be prepared for his sophomore year of high school. I am happy to report Liam just started back to Notre Dame College Prep and is loving it! Over the summer Liam was able to see some friends and spend lots of me doing two of his favorite things: mini-golfing and bike-riding. One of the other highlights was having a super suppor ve family from St. Emily come over to bring us dinner along with their new puppy to meet Liam!
Recently Liam had a 4 day hospital stay when his central line got infected. A central line goes directly into the bloodstream for blood to be drawn and IV type medicine to be administered. Luckily we caught the infec on early on so it was treatable. Liam had his line taken out which was a big relief despite knowing he’ll have to get poked every me for lab work. Now Liam can do more ac vi es like swim again!
Liam is s ll working hard to gain back weight and strength. He’s thankful that his hair has grown back in, but not sure he likes the way it came in wavy. Liam is wai ng l mid-September to get a haircut when he will be a groomsman in his oldest brother Ian’s wedding.
Meanwhile Liam and all of our family are so grateful for the prayers and support of our St. Emily family that con nues on and on. God bless you all!

Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was in-carnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Fa-ther and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Bego en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
