Our record-breaking 2013-14 year became all the more special when Chief
Executive, Stuart Griffiths was crowned The BusinessDesk.com
Ambassador of the Year at the West Midlands Business Masters Awards.
Presenting the award, TheBusinessDesk.com Editor Andy Coyne said:
“Stuart is a very worthy recipient of this award… his theatre has announced
a record-breaking 12 months, which saw the venue sell more than 625,000
tickets in the 2013-14 financial year, a rise of 23%.”
Much of this success was due to the trio of multi award-winning shows
presented by the Hippodrome in 2013: Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s
The Phantom of the Opera, Disney’s The Lion King and the
National Theatre’s War Horse - all huge box office hits.
In recognition of an extraordinary business year a commemorative
Hippodrome Performance review is being published.

We Clean: A Polished Performance
We Clean, cleaning
custodians of the
Hippodrome briefly put down
their brooms and buckets to
celebrate twenty years of
service and retirement of
team head, Janet Lynch.
As a surprise tribute to
Janet, We Clean Directors,
Paul Concannon and David
Harker have named a seat in
the auditorium which is kept
in pristine condition daily by
a twenty strong team.
We Clean’s Paul Concannon
said “Naming a seat in this magnificent theatre where Janet has
worked tirelessly with such pride is a perfect way to recognise 20
years of service.”
Alongside, a second plaque was placed in memory of We Clean
colleague Anton, who sadly passed away but whose mother,
Gabriela, remains part of the dedicated team.
NAME A SEATFor over a decade, the Hippodrome’s Name A Seat programme has been a popular way fortheatre lovers to dedicate messages to friends, colleagues and loved ones. The following threestories illustrate the different ways seats have been dedicated in recent months.
Sara and Brenda:A shared love of musical theatre
A couple of years ago we
decided to do a backstage
tour. It was really interesting
but we hadn't realised that
the theatre is a charity and is
run with the help of
donations. This was what
prompted us to buy a joint
plaque for one of the seats.
Now, when I book seats for a
show, I always try and get the
seat with our plaque and if we
can't get that seat, then we
like to go and say “hello” to it
during the interval!
Carol & Roger: Celebrating amilestone birthday
Carol: I was looking for
something a bit different for
Roger’s special birthday this
year and I stumbled upon the
opportunity to Name a Seat
whilst looking on the
Hippodrome’s website. It
instantly struck me as being
the kind of unique present I
was after and I knew Roger
would love it.
Roger: On the morning of my birthday Carol brought me to
the Hippodrome without telling me why. Rather than
buying tickets at Box Office, we were taken through the foyer
and into the auditorium. I was then shown my seat - G14 -
and the dedicated plaque Carol had arranged for me. It was a
complete surprise. Next time we book we’ll make sure we
book early enough to secure my seat!

An Accessible Theatre For AllOn 29 January 2015 the Hippodrome willpresent its second Relaxed Performance ofthis year’s pantomime Jack and theBeanstalk specifically tailored for audienceswith autism and learning disabilities. Theinitiative, which began last year, has beenuniversally welcomed by those who findattending a regular performance a difficult ordaunting experience.
For one afternoon, young people with their schools, carers or families can escape through the magic ofpantomime which has been thoughtfully prepared andpresented with them in mind. The RelaxedPerformance differs from a usual show with reducedsound levels and special effects, dimmed house lightsso patrons can easily move in and out of theauditorium and an additional access provision of acaptioner and two signers.
Working alongside producing company QdosPantomimes and the cast it’s an organisation-wideevent, from front of house to fundraising, it really is allhands on deck to realise a project of this scale. To addan extra dimension, Hippodrome staff attendspecialised training in advance of the performance sothat they are ready to respond to any requests thatmight arise during the course of the show. And severalfront of house spaces are also transformed into break-out spaces for the young people to go to, should theperformance get too much.
With your help hundreds of people withlearning disabilities and their families willenjoy pantomime in a supportiveenvironment, specifically adapted andtailored to their needs.
As an unsubsidised, registered charity, HippodromePlus initiatives like the Relaxed Performance simplycannot happen without the support of local businesses, individual donors and grant-making Trusts. This year, like last, we’ve teamed up with The Big Give to unlockmatched funding during the Christmas Challenge whichwill help make your donation go even further. As partof The Big Give’s Christmas Challenge, any donationmade from Thursday 4 December could be doubled, boosting the impact it has on those with learningdisabilities and their families.

THE WOW-FACTOR PART IINow in its second year, the Welcome to our World(WOW) project takes place in Sacred Heart CatholicPrimary School, Birchfield.
Hippodrome Plus practitioners used a CommonwealthGames theme to help pupils celebrate and learn moreabout many cultures, a number of which arerepresented in the inner-city school.
In front of an audience of family, friends and CentreSoftrepresentatives, traditional songs, dances, poetry andstories were performed by all year groups. Attendingthe WOW performance, CentreSoft’s Shelagh Fisher wasable to meet some of the participants and see at firsthand the theatrical skills that pupils had developedduring the project.
During the assembly, Sacred Heart’s Head teacher LisaFahy said, “We are very grateful to CentreSoft in helpingsupport all pupils and staff to explore the world-wideheritages that the school shares as a family. Withouttheir support this important project could not takeplace.”
Margaret Pearson, Centresoft’s Commercial Directorsaid “It’s amazing that we can contribute in such apositive way. Our relationship with the Hippodrome isgoing from strength to strength. We are very proud ofthis project.”
And the Commonwealth baton has been well and trulypassed on, from class to class in the Assembly’s finaleand looking ahead to next year when WOW Part III plansto connect Sacred Heart with schools in the countriesof their rich and diverse heritage.

PINSENT MASONS’ SILENT COMIC TURNLong-standing Hippodrome supporter Pinsent Masons backed thisyear’s comic turn, the fabulous silent movie Queensbury Caperswhich had its world premiere at our popular Southside neighbour,The Electric Cinema.
The film was the culmination of a term-long project led byHippodrome partner Richard Hayhow of Open Theatre Co workingwith participants aged 16-19 years from Queensbury School. All thestudents have learning disabilities and face the likely prospect ofdifficulties in securing full-time employment.
Drawing on their expertise Hippodrome’s Creative Learning Manager,Liz Leck and Richard Hayhow identified slapstick as the idealmedium to develop personal communication skills, increase self-confidence and raise self-esteem.
Liz Leck said “Silent Laurel and Hardy films formed the researchbase and inspiration. It was amazing to see how quickly the studentsconnected with the key concepts and were able to devise a storylinearound the classic comedy hook.”
Directed by Richard Hayhow, every student appears in the funny,fast-paced, black and white film with an authentic sound-track.Filmed in locations across central Birmingham, students alsocontributed to the decision-making process and artistic planning.
Pinsent Masons partner, Peter McHugh who attended the filmpremiere and admitted to laughing out loud said, “It’s tremendous tosee the work the Hippodrome is undertaking with a section of thecity’s community who are often overlooked. Pinsent Masons is proudto have supported Queensbury Capers. I congratulate each and every
one of the actors. They boasta wealth of talent and greatcomic timing.”

As part of the commemorations marking the centenary of WWI,thousands of people gathered on Sat 2 Aug to take part in the UK’spremier of Minimum Monument. The exhibition saw over 5,000 handcrafted ice sculptures being places on the steps of Chamberlain Squareby members of the public.
The project is the creation of award-winning Brazilian artist Néle Azevedo and featuredthe largest number of ice sculptures produced to date. In the lead up to the exhibition, assisted by a team of 25 Hippodrome volunteers, Néle carefully created the tiny icefigures by freezing water into male and female form moulds, which were chizzled intoshape and re-frozen in one of 12 freezers ahead of being transported to the event inChamberlain Square.
The exhibition saw around 4,000 people attend with many hundreds of images appearingon social media sites.
