2009 MATCH REPORT AFL SYDNEY RETAIN MICK RAFTERY CUP
AFL Sydney has retained the Mick Raftery Cup with a comfortable 33 point win over NSW Gaelic Athletics
Association (NSWGAA) in the International Rules match played at Mahoney Park today. Final Score 7.7.18-
81 to 2.10.6-48.
In front of a good crowd the youthful AFL Sydney side were too polished for their Irish counterpart who
also struggled to adapt to the Sydney sides tackling, a part of the game which is not seen in Gaelic football.
AFL Sydney opened up kicking with the aid of the wind and wasted no time in scoring two overs courtesy of
Luke Stanford and Kieran Wright however they squandered many other opportunities through inaccurate
kicking for goal which would be expected given their unfamiliarity with the round ball. The Irish were kept
scoreless for the term with the defence and goal keeping of Rowan Bilkey managing to snuff out any Irish
raids. At the first change AFL Sydney led by 18 points.
The Irish had the use of the breeze in the second quarter and used their skills to advantage to score the
first two overs of the term to bring the score closer. The AFL Sydney side were able to steady and with Alex
Lee and Kieran Wright scoring Goals the Sydney side led by 17 points at the long break.
AFL Sydney were able to dominate the third quarter and with further goals to Irishman Shane D'Arcy and
Daniel Spiteri they had opened up a commanding 30 point lead at three quarter time.
To the NSWGAA's credit they nevr gave up and in fact had their best period for the game in the last quarter
however were not able to convert their possession into goals and with further goals to Matt Edwins, Cal
McGuirk and Lee the AFL Sydney side were able to run out 33 point winners.
After the match AFL Sydney captain Ron Wason was presented with the Mick Raftery Cup from Mrs Raftery
(pictured) and Kieran Wright was presented with the Kerry Murphy Medal as best on the ground.

2008 MATCH REPORT INTERNATIONAL RULES A WINNER
The International Rules concept was a winner today when AFL Sydney and the NSW Gaelic Athletics
Association (NSWGAA) clashed at Mahoney Park. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, AFL Sydney prevailed
by the narrowest of margins to win the Mick Raftery Cup. Final Score, AFL Sydney 4.3.10 (43) to NSWGAA
3.6.6 (42).
The match began in ideal weather and ground conditions with the AFL side having the better of theopening, playing a high tempo game built around a lot of run and handball. As expected, their tackling
worried the NSWGAA side and they were able to create a number of turnovers through this method. At the
first change, AFL Sydney had established a ten point lead.
The second quarter started in a similar fashion and when Matt Carey and Kieran Wright were able to
record goals, AFL Sydney had opened up a twenty point lead and the game threatened to be a blow out.
Not to be denied though, the Irish side hit back and by using their strength, which is kicking the ball to
position, they were able to dominate possession and subsequently field position and one goal and three
overs saw the home side reduce the margin to five points at the long break.
The hectic pace of the game saw the interchange benches working overtime and fitness was going to be
important towards the end of the game.
The third quarter saw the AFL side again have the majority of the possession however, poor disposal into
their forward line saw the Gaelic side repel many attacking forays. Damien Bowles was moved forward in
the third quarter and this proved a masterstroke as he contributed all AFL Sydney's points in the quarter;
one goal, an over and three behinds. NSWGAA responded with two goals of their own and entering the
final term the AFL side led by just four points.
The final quarter was a tight affair as both teams, and their supporters, strived for the win. AFL Sydney gotan early goal courtesy of Ron Wason, following good lead up work from Dane Rampe. The NSWGAA strived
for the important goal however they were thwarted on a couple of occasions by excellent goalkeeping
from Blake McGrath. In the end the AFL were able to hold on to their lead and record a one point victory.
In a match where almost all players contributed at some point, Ron Wason was the best player on the
ground, taking telling marks and making attacking runs from defence before moving forward in the last
quarter and kicking an important goal. Mitch Frail used his height and athleticism to advantage, Luke
Stanford attacked the ball with ferocity and picked up numerous possessions whilst skipper Alastair
Richardson was superb in defence starting numerous attacking forays with hard running whilst also
repelling many of the NSWGAA attacks.
At the conclusion of the match Alastair Richardson was presented with the Mick Raftery Cup.
The match was well contested, played in excellent spirit and an excellent spectacle. The players
commented on the quickness of the game with very few stoppages in play. Following today's match this is
certain to become a regular fixture on both the AFL Sydney and NSWGAA calendar.
