T B A Y M Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael needs you to help assure our commitment to provide a
daily minyan, every day, twice each day, 365 days a year.
I received multiple requests for the story I
shared on Erev Rosh Hashana 5780:
The Trouble Tree
Now, it’s not my practice to give a sermon
per se on Erev Rosh Hashanah; instead, I
just like to share a story. A story that I hope
will inspire us as we begin these High Holy
Days. The one I choose for this year, I actu-
ally found on Facebook, titled: The Trouble
Tree; it goes like this:
A man was hired to help restore an old
farmhouse. The very first day on the job
was fraught with problems: a flat tire made
him late, his electric drill quit in the middle
of the day, and his ancient pick-up truck
refused to start when it was time to go
home. Out of pity, the man who had hired
him drove him home. The whole way home
the handyman sat in stony silence.
With gratitude, upon arriving to his
home, he invited the man in to meet his
family. As they walked toward the front
door, the handyman, with tears in his eyes,
paused briefly at a small tree, reached out
and touched the tips of the branches with
both hands.
Then, when opening the door to his
home, the handyman underwent an amaz-
ing transformation. His face broke into a
broad smile; he hugged his two small chil-
dren, and gave his wife a kiss.
Afterwards, he walked the man
back to his car. As they passed the tree, the
man’s curiosity got the better of him. He
asked him about what he had witnessed
earlier.
The handyman replied, “Oh, that's
my trouble tree. I know I can't help having
troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure;
those troubles don't belong in the house
with my wife and children. So I just hang
them up on the tree every night when I
come home and ask God to help me to take
care of them. Then in the morning, I pick
them up again. Funny thing is,” he said, as
a smile brightened his face; “when I come
out in the morning to pick 'em up, there
aren't nearly as many as I remember hang-
ing there from the night before.”
This is a simple, simple story, yet, it speaks
volumes. We all have bad days, we all have
problems, and we all have shadows that
darken our lives. The key is how do we
cope with a world that is so troubled; espe-
cially over this past year? These are issues
that the High Holy Days demand that we
each must personally address.
Life may not always be kind to us; life may
not always be pretty and as serene as we
had hoped for. And, sadly, we all too often
take out our troubles upon those who love
us the most. We each need our own Trou-
ble Tree!

New and Exciting Developments Since the High Holy Days
We hope your 5780 has gotten off to a great start! It was very nice to see every-one during the High Holy Days. If you heard our Presidents’ address on Rosh Hashanah or read it afterwards when we sent it via email, you know we spoke about the enormous gratification we have felt through our volunteer efforts at TBAY, motivating us to take on a third year of Presidency. We hope that what we said resonated with many of you so that you’ll be more encouraged to volunteer this year. We have so many opportunities to do so.
Here are some fun things coming up this winter that you can get involved with. Whether you attend or participate in the planning, we’d love to see you.
1. Our second annual Springfield Jewish Community Hanukkah party is on Thursday, December 19 at 6 pm. We will host Congregation Israel, Temple Sha’arey Shalom and Springfield Chabad to celebrate Hanukkah as one community.
2. Our recently launched gift card pro-gram, which is written about in detail later in this Bulletin.
3. Women’s League events – Thursday December 12 is the Hanukkah Party with Latkes, Vodka Cocktails and a very fun grab bag.
4. Women’s League’s Book Club on Thursday, February 6. The book is “Slow Motion: A Memoir of a Life Res-cued by Tragedy” by Dani Shapiro.
5. Join the Men’s Club to cheer on the NJ Devils on Wednesday, December 18, followed by a concert by the Mac-cabeats.
6. On Sunday, February 2 is the FJMC World Wide Wrap followed by a com-bined Women’s League and Men’s Club program and brunch.
7. Start a chavurah. Winter is almost here, what better time to get a small group together to meet at a home and do something fun and interesting to-gether
8. We have an Adult Education event on January 30, welcoming Rabbi Ron Isaacs, who will be presenting “Listen to Her Voice.”
Or join any of our 26 committees and vol-unteer your time, your talents or your ide-as. We welcome your participation.
Please contact either one of us or the main office for information on how to get involved in any of these events.

Hanukkah 5780
How and When to Light the Candles
The first candle will be lit this year on Sunday evening, De-cember 22.
Erev Shabbat and Hanukkah: Hanukkah candles are lit after sundown. This presents a problem when Shab-bat and Hanukkah coincide because Shabbat candles are lit before sundown. It seems straight-forward, but what do we do when it is both Ha-nukkah and Erev Shabbat, which happens this year on December 27? And when is a Yahrzeit candle lit?
In order to fulfill the requirement of marking the next day of Hanukkah, achieved by the post-sundown kindling of the candles, the Ner Shel Hanukkah must burn past sundown on Friday night. Regular Hanukkah candles only burn for about 15 to 25 minutes. We need enough “burn time” to last be-yond the time to kindle the Shabbat candles (18 minutes be-fore sundown), and enough time to recite the appropriate
blessings over the Hanukkah candles. Therefore, the Hanuk-kah candles must be lit at least 30 minutes before sundown (10 minutes before the Shabbat candles) and burn for 30 minutes after sundown.
The solution is to use the longer Hanukkah candles for Friday nights, the type that will burn for at least 60 minutes. This
year you will need 7 of the longer candles. This includes the Shamash, although the Shamash candle need not be a longer taper. The Shamash is only a lighting tool and need not burn longer.
If one needs to light a Yahrzeit candle on any night of Hanukkah, it should be lit prior to the Ha-nukkah candles.
Candles are added to the Hanukkiah going right to left as you face it; they are then lit going left to right – the newest candle being the first to be lit. It is a mitzvah to display your Hanuk-kiah so it can be publicly seen. At least one Hanukkiah should be utilized per household and it is a lovely tradition for each member of the household to light their own Hanukkiah.

Following Mark Scherzer’s speech on Yom Kippur about
the expanded gift card program, Ways & Means estab-
lished a Gift Card Program Committee that initiated this
important fundraiser on October 27. Thanks to the gener-
osity of Women’s League, who loaned both their gift card
inventory and initial cash funding, the program has had a
very strong start. Within two short weeks, more than 10%
of TBAY’s members have already purchased gift cards or
stamps with sales approaching an impressive $20,000.
As we approach the holidays, please purchase gift cards to
the grocery stores where you shop, including ShopRite,
Kings, Acme, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Costco, Walmart
and Target.
Hanukkah and Christmas are right around the corner. Uti-
lize the Gift Card Program for all of your gifting require-
ments. We have inventory of so many stores and online
retailers. But if a gift card for your desired store is not cur-
rently in stock, the Committee will obtain it within 2 weeks
of your order. Retail stores such as Lord & Taylor, Bloom-
ingdales, Nordstrom and Macy’s provide the greatest profit
to the program. And unlike buying gift cards elsewhere, you
pay no fee when you buy them from TBAY!
Not sure what to purchase? Buy a gift card to the gift card
table. This will allow the recipient to come to TBAY and
purchase any gift card that is available. Do all of your shop-
ping with one stop on a Sunday morning between 8:45 am
and noon or come to TBAY whenever the office is open.
The gift cards to the gift card table have a beautiful logo
and design and will make any recipient happy.
Do you own a business that uses Forever Stamps or gives
holiday gifts? The Gift Card Program is your answer for
both. You can buy rolls or sheets of stamps at a discounted
price.
If you have questions, suggestions, or want to place an
order, please contact Mark Scherzer at 908-797-2695 or
via [email protected] between 6:15 am
and 6:00 pm M-F.

JNF: Jewish National Fund – What Does It Do?
WITH LOVE
Today’s Jewish National Fund is still planting seeds and investing for the long term - literally and metaphorically. From agricultural research farms in the Galilee to shovel-ready housing projects for young families in the Negev, our portfolio of work falls into 7 key strategic areas that directly strengthen the future of Israel and support the land and people of Israel.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Today, more attention is focused on Israel and its success in culti-vating the desert. Jewish National Fund, as part of the support of the land and people of Israel, sponsors a ground-breaking network of regional agriculture and research development stations in the Negev and Galilee. Israel’s brightest scientists work closely with local farmers, research institutions, and universities to increase the agricultural efficiency.
WATER SOLUTIONS
When the State of Israel was established in 1948, water played a significant role in shaping its character. Jewish National Fund's work with water has increased Israel’s water economy by over 12% through the treatment, recycling, and collection of both waste and runoff water, responsible aquifer drilling, and river reha-bilitation.
HERITAGE SITE PRESERVATION
Heritage sites are a powerful connection to Israel’s past and a touchstone to our collective future. Some dating to ancient times, others to the 1948 War of Independence, are important symbols that inspire our nation and deserve our unwavering attention.
Working in partnership with the Society for Preservation of Israel Heritage Sites.
EDUCATION & ADVOCACY
As the largest provider of Israel education programs in the United States, we offer more Americans more ways to learn about Israel. From kindergarten through to adulthood, from b’nai mitzvah pro-jects to Alternative Break and Birthright Israel trips, we engage, educate and help students – and the broader community – foster a greater commitment and love for the land of Israel.
FORESTRY & GREEN INNOVATIONS
Simply put, our work planting trees and developing green spaces has made Israel an environmental powerhouse. Now, as innova-tors in ecological development and pioneers in afforestation and fire prevention, we continue to strengthen ties between the land and the people of Israel. From forest to coral reef restoration, soil conservation to agricultural infrastructure, we work to ensure the protection of nature.
DISABILITIES & SPECIAL NEEDS
We believe passionately that the inclusion of people with disabili-ties and special needs should be woven tightly into the fabric of everyday life. All the more so in Israel. That’s why today, our fo-cus on providing services for people with disabilities and special needs is strategically located in the Negev and Galilee. Through a variety of initiatives, JNF provides cutting-edge rehabilitative ser-vices.
COMMUNITY BUILDING
In no other area of work is our vision more apparent than within Community Building. Today, as Israelis continue to crowd Central Israel, we see an opportunity to develop the full potential of the Galilee and Negev as rich centers of agriculture, tourism, and technology. That’s why population growth and regional economic development form the backbone of our Go North and Blueprint Negev strategies.

Welcome to the Early Childhood Program (ECP) at Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael. I recognize the chal-lenges of becoming a new parent, being a full-time working parent as well as joining a new community. It is my hope we can make that expe-rience as positive as possible by
encouraging an atmosphere of friendship and acting as an extension of your home. Our experienced faculty is ded-icated to planting the seeds that foster your child’s love of learning by not only preparing him/her for school, but for life. We are proud of our program, which is designed to meet the needs of our families.
We create an environment that encourages children to learn through discovery. Our commitment to this growth is seen in our rich, developmentally appropriate play-based curriculum. We provide experiences for children that pro-mote learning in the academic domains of literacy, math and science as well as the more traditional early learning
areas of cognitive, social, emotional, physical and lan-guage development. We meet all children at their own de-velopmental level, nurture their growth and foster excite-ment of their discoveries.
We seek to nurture a child’s curiosity and sense of commu-nity and cultivate a connection to Jewish values and tradi-tions. Our families are partners in the work we do, joining with children and teachers to learn and celebrate Jewish life and learning.
The first few months of school have flown by. We celebrat-ed Thanksgiving and Hanukkah is rapidly approaching. If you or anybody you know is interested in our ECP pro-gram, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Rabbi Mark Mallach
We are Shorashim, The Re-ligious School at Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael, and we could not be prouder! Each week we enjoy learning and growing together as a reli-gious school family and
community. In our classrooms and hallways, we share the celebration of Jewish culture and heritage, the study of He-brew and prayer, and participate in discussions of Jewish values and ethics. We are exploring our Jewish identities and developing a connection to Eretz Yisrael, the Land of Israel.
The fall season has been a busy one for all our learners. We started with our “Meet and Greet Breakfast” where we had time to catch up with our religious school friends after our summer vacations. Our Shorashim parents had the oppor-tunity to meet with our teachers to learn about each grade’s curriculum and special programs. It was a wonderful experi-ence to celebrate the holidays together. From our youngest “Kochavim” to our almost Bar and Bat Mitzvah students, we gathered to wish each other a “Shanah Tovah” and a “Chag Sameach.” Our entire Religious School enjoyed a beautiful Sukkot morning of shared learning at Congregation B’nai Israel in Millburn with an interactive program with “The Bible Players,” an improv/comedy group.
Our Shorashim Religious School year is filled with special programs and activities. Our Kitah Vav students were so excited to receive their Tanakhim at their Shabbat Alive! ser-vice. Kitah Zayin and their families shared a workshop where they learned about the meaning and significance of tallit and
tefillin. Since fun and learning go together, we shared our annual “Shorashim Silly Sunday” by expressing our silliness with our clothes, hair and hats. It’s amazing how much is learned when the students become the teachers and the teachers become the students.
Hag Hanukkah Sameach! Happy Hanukkah! It’s hard to be-lieve that Hanukkah is almost here. All our students are busy learning the history, laws and customs of Hanukkah. It’s great to share our family holiday traditions with each other. Our Kochavim and Kitah Alef classes will have so much fun learning how to make Olive Oil at the “Olive Oil Press”.. We look forward to sharing a morning of learning and celebration with our Congregation B’nai Israel friends as we host an in-teractive morning of Hanukkah learning and activities. As the Winter continues, we will focus on the mitzvah of “Ve'ahavta Lere'acha Kamocha” – “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” – and the importance of RESPECT for all. We look forward to learning about the seasons in Israel as we learn about and celebrate Tu B’Shevat. Kitah Vav will focus on the beautiful Havdalah ceremony and participate in a workshop where they will create their own Havdalah can-dles and Bisamim (Spices). Our Kitah Vav and Kitah Zayin classes will join in the Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael “World Wide Wrap.” We are looking forward to sharing these expe-riences with our Shorashim classmates and teachers.

VISITING THE SICK
Bikkur cholim, visiting the sick, is a sa-cred act and a tradition in Judaism that goes back 3000 years, when God visit-ed Abraham while he was healing from his circumcision. If you know someone
who is ill and you would like to visit him or her, there are a few things to be aware of so that your visit brings comfort and not discomfort.
Make sure your visit is welcomed. Call ahead.
Don’t stay too long. In the hospital five or ten minutes is the limit. If you are visiting someone at home, fifteen minutes may be all right, but you can check with your friend or rela-tive to see if he or she needs to rest before that.
Listen, don’t talk a lot. It’s not about you. Sometimes we are so distressed about the illness of a friend or loved one
that we want to unburden ourselves about how distressed we are. Not a good idea!
Don’t give medical advice or comment on your perceived quality of the person’s medical care. If you are able, you can offer assistance, but only if you will actually be able to deliver if the person calls upon you. There is nothing as dispiriting to a person in distress as reaching out for help and being turned down.
If you know someone in our synagogue community who is ill, let Rabbi Mallach know. If you would like to join the Car-ing Committee and perform mitzvot with us, let me know.
