SOUPER BOWL OF CARING Our youth will hold soup pots at the church doors on Souper Bowl of Caring Weekend, February 3-4, 2018. They will join young people in churches and temples
across the country to collect money for those who are hungry and hurting. In 2017, $10.1 million was
collected by Souper Bowl of Caring participants for local charities. All of the money collected is donated to a charity selected by the participant - none of the
money is sent to the Souper Bowl of Caring headquarters. Please support this effort to “love our
neighbors” by dropping $5 and a canned food item in the soup
pot on February 3-4. All donations will go to
The Goshen Ecumenical Food Pantry.
If you would like a report of your donations for 2017, please call the church office at 294-5328.

Before the Christmas season is too far in the rear view mirror, we offer thanks to those who worked to prepare and execute the liturgies of the season. Thanks, first, to Mary Ellen Hubbard, Carol Silvernail, Bob Kish, Ray-mundo Huertero, the choirs, and our guest instrumentalists, for helping to raise our hearts and voices in song. Their preparations begin much earlier than we might imagine. Thanks, too, to Mark Gargiulo, for setting up the crèche in the church, and to members of the high school youth group, who set up the scene outside. Jim Murray and his crew spent many hours decorating our buildings and the church. Our altar servers, lectors, ush-ers, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion readily stepped up to assist with the additional liturgies. The second 4:00pm Christmas Eve Mass at Burke Catholic High School was again well received. I reiterate my gratitude to Janice Clark, John Douthit, David Predmore, Johnny Martinez, and the administration and staff of BC, who rolled out the red carpet for us, and are eager that BC be the permanent home for this Mass.
+ + + Next weekend marks the beginning Catholic Schools Week; this year’s theme is Catholic Schools: Learn – Serve – Lead – Succeed. The festivities at St. John School kick off with the ever-popular pancake breakfast next Sunday morning from 8:30am to 12:30pm. That same day, the school is sponsoring an open house from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Whether you have school-age children or not, I encourage you to come by and meet the faculty, stu-dents, and parents, and discover first-hand the great things that, with God’s grace, happen at SJS on a daily ba-sis!
+ + + Last Sunday, I had the joy of baptizing two babies; both of them gave their lungs a good workout during the ceremony. Some may find that annoying, but when it happens, I find it both entertaining and humbling at the same time–entertaining, because I can’t help but laugh at my inability to speak over them, and humbling, be-cause it’s God’s way of reminding me–us–that the work of creation continues, and that He’s very much present in and through even the littlest of people. It’s a joy each week to see young families, parents, children, toddlers, and babies at Mass; they have my admira-tion and respect for keeping our common worship at the center of their day. Nevertheless, it can sometimes be a challenge, so I’m happy to offer these “pointers,” which so far as I can discover, are from a parish in the Archdiocese of Portland, OR. They seem to be pretty practical and sound: TO THE PARENTS OF OUR YOUNG CHILDREN, MAY WE SUGGEST… Relax! God put the wiggle in children. Don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome! Feel free to sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear. Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the priest, altar servers, choir, etc. Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. If you have to leave Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus said, “Let the
children come to me.” Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the Church,
to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship. TO THE MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH... The presence of children is a gift to the Church! They are members of our community, and a reminder that
our parish is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to the parents. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
