LEADERSHIP AT ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE
Whilst the Principal is responsible for the overall leadership of St Joseph’s College, this task is shared with all members of staff. The nature of schools and education means that everyone employed by the College is a role model to the students who attend. This places an expectation upon both teaching and school support staff to conduct themselves in alignment with the values, policies and direction of the College and allows the leadership of the College community to be shared by all staff members.
The process of teaching and learning can shape futures like nothing else.
In addition, a formal leadership structure exists allowing some staff to undertake additional leadership responsibilities known as Positions of Leadership (POLs). Holders of POLs play a vital role in influencing the members of their team to achieve the College mission and goals. These leaders are allocated time and payment in recognition of the inherent challenges and demands of these positions.
Here at St Joseph’s College I believe that every adult in our school is responsible for every child in
our school and that the success of each child is dependent on all of us, not on one of us.
At St Joseph’s College I am working to develop a culture of shared or distributed leadership. This means those who are appointed to POLs are obligated to understand the School Improvement Plan (SIP) goals and are entrusted to work with their team with autonomy to bring about improvements to their field and the College as a whole. Two key questions to guide you are “how will you use the role to support the College to reach it’s goals?” and “what can I do in my leadership role to help staff and students work effectively to achieve the goals of the College?.”
Our aim is to challenge all students to be the very best they can be.
The overarching goal of St Joseph’s College is the building of a dynamic learning community that operates collegially to achieve academic and pedagogical excellence, provide diverse learning experiences and opportunities, and nurture the wellbeing of students. Achieving this goal requires quality leadership and the support of all staff. Leadership is a journey, and few people begin the journey with all their leadership capabilities fully developed. Undertaking a POL is both an opportunity to grow in leadership capacity and support the College to grow in excellence.
The skills needed for the 21st century, which support a love of learning that goes beyond the
classroom, will be actively embraced by our College.
I look forward to working with those who will be appointed to POL roles. If appointed to one of these roles, the College will support you with access to professional learning that enables your ongoing personal and professional development. I invite you to give serious consideration to applying for a POL at St Joseph’s College.

General note Regarding Time Release
All positions which involve time allowances provide release measured as part of the 20 hours of face-
to-face teaching per week. According to the Agreement, teachers nominally work 38 hours per week,
not just 20 hours per week.
Teaching responsibilities extend well beyond the time in the classroom. Teaching also involves
preparation for classes, marking of student work, follow-up in regard to discipline, communication
with parents, subject team meetings, liaison with colleagues regarding teaching and assessment,
report writing, etc. Therefore, as a matter of fairness, the actual time that roles require should be
considerably more than the ‘release time’, which is a fraction of only 20 hours per week, not 38 hours.
