Never in a generation has there been such a major change in the structure of Junior and other Scottish ’Non-League’ football as is taking place at the pre-sent time. The Junior game which has survived, and indeed at times has flour-ished, for 133 years appears to be in its death throes.
The Scottish FA’s strategy to get all football involved in a pyramid system was always going to be realised. This strategy would embrace the Junior game but the Scottish Junior FA appeared to be a trifle dilatory in taking the concept on board and were perhaps caught out by the speed of change during last season.
Two successive Super League titles had fired Kelty Hearts’ ambition to climb further up the Scottish football ladder and Kelty sparked things off by leaving the Juniors a year ago to join the Senior Pyramid at its lowest level, the East of Scotland League. Fife Council’s decision to plough £millions to help develop Hearts’ Central Park, now New Central Park, into a community hub was per-fectly timed. Kelty exposed the gulf between the Junior game and the Senior game at that level by winning 23 of their 24 league games.
Ambitious Junior clubs, primarily in the Lothians, sensed that not only was this League on their doorstep but it would open to entering the Wm Hill Scot-tish Cup and the possibility of untold riches.
One of the main drivers, though, was the opportunity for the Lothians clubs to get more derby matches. Uppermost in the thoughts of many Lothians’ club committees was the significant reduction in not just the cost of travel but also the reduction in travel time.
The first club to apply for East of Scotland League membership during last season was Dalkeith Thistle. Interestingly, the attendance at Tayport’s match at Dalkeith at the end of March this year was watched by the lowest recorded attendance for a Tayport match in the 18 years of the East Region. Of the 41 spectators, over half were there to support Tayport.
The drip of clubs deciding to apply for membership became a flow and, with clubs seeing their neighbours leaving, the flow became a flood. Since then the recent SJFA AGM confirmed that the Junior Association would join the pyra-mid. How this is all going to fit in with the pyramid structure has yet to be de-termined. Hopefully there will be some positive feedback sooner than later during this season.
Almost half the clubs in membership of the Juniors’ East Region flew the coop and we’ve got only 36 clubs now in membership which neatly gives us 3 divi-sions of 12 clubs.
An Interesting Season In Prospect

Today’s Game McBookie.com Super League
Tayport v Kennoway Star Hearts
A warm welcome to the Canniepairt to Kennoway Star Hearts’ committee, players and supporters for this Super League 2018/19 season curtain raiser.
In any season in the past, this would have been a Premier Division match today, Kennoway having been relegated from the Super League and Tayport missing out on promotion. The well documented turmoil of the past four months however means that Hearts received a reprieve and Tayport a somewhat unexpected promotion.
Great Opportunity
With the absence of some Lothians based heavyweights, the current Super League teams will see this season as a great opportunity to make their mark and go for the title.
Tayport and Kennoway should be no exceptions and with only 22 league games, and half the games over by November, a good start to the season will be essential.
Loss of Firepower
Tayport have lost three experienced forwards who netted 60% of the team’s goals between them from their squad in the close season, a situation compounded by the
absence today of defenders Ryan Suttie and Connor Gray, both suspended.
New Faces
New faces making their home
debuts are midfielders Josh Chalmers from Arbroath Vics, Steven Duffy (Kirrie) and keeper Jack Shaw (Forfar Athletic).
Kennoway have lost Chris Gay and last season’s Players’ Player of the Year Matthew Gay to Kelty Hearts. Added to the squad have been Ryan Muir from amateur cracks Leven United, young Jason Watson from AM Soccer, Lee Bremner, Lewis Grierson, the former Lochgelly Albert player, and David Cunningham who is back in contention after a lengthy injury lay off.
Goals on the menu?
Goals could be plentiful today as both clubs have been scoring regularly during pre-season, in Tayport’s case with the notable exception of a 0-6 scoreline at Broxburn.
Defensive Frailties
The loss of goals in these warm-up games will be concerning to both bosses. Charlie King’s team’s defensive frailties last season was their Achilles heel while Craig Johnstone, too, has that concern, his side having the doubtful distinction of the Super League’s worst defensive record, losing an average of three goals a game.
Lee Bryce, Kennoway’s top scorer in his club’s pre-season friendlies. Lee played with Tayport from February 2010 to May 2011 under first Willie Gar-ner and latterly the late John McGlashan. He started 29 games and came on as substitute 12 times, helping Tayport to the last 8 of the Scottish Junior Cup in 2010. Lee’s hat trick at Blairgow-rie that season was one of the few occasions on which one of our players has appeared from the bench to notch a treble.

Alan Tulleth dominates the Player of the Year Awards
Alan Tulleth who signed for Lochee United during the close season, dominat-ed the annual awards, picking up Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Fans’ Favourite trophies as well as the Goal of the Season award.
Kieran Conway repeated the previous season’s success by lifting the Young Player of the Year trophy. The Top Scorer award went to another player who has departed for pastures new, Dale Reid
In the 1970s Tayport Amateurs and Star Hearts had some titanic clashes both on the East Common and at Treaton Park in the Scottish Amateur Cup and the Fife Amateur Cup. In the 1980s when Tayport ran three amateur sides we played on several occasions in the East Fife Amateur FA against Kennoway’s amateur club of the day, Kennoway Beam.
Since Kennoway amalgamated with Star to join the Junior ranks, we’ve met only twice, Tayport losing both games, 2-3 at Treaton Park and 3-4 at Can-niepairt in the Premier League 2016/17 season.
Food for Thought In the 1960s and 1970s Scottish Football was enjoying a purple patch. The na-tional side was packed with star players and our teams were regularly match-ing the best teams in Europe. That’s no longer the case.
World Cup Finals participation for Scotland seems now but a dream. Clubs are more often than not out of Europe before the school holidays are over. Senior clubs are abandoning their youth teams. Amateur leagues are shrinking dra-matically.
All this despite the introduction of structured coaching, children being coached almost as soon as they can walk, wonderful new facilities. Yet, as of last weekend, of the 77 new signings by Scottish Premiership clubs, 71.5% were foreign born players. What’s gone wrong, then? Who’s got the answer?

ANDY ROBERTSON aka BUNT or BUNTER
Tayport FC lost a much respected friend and loyal supporter with the death of Andy Robertson on 10th July, four days short of his 67th birthday. Andy, who was better known in the football world as Bunt or Bunter, first joined the committee in 1973 and immediately spearheaded the fundraising efforts to construct the existing club pavilion. A lifetime Tayport resident, Bunt went to work in Sudan in the late 1970s and there-after continued to work abroad from time to time, in the Middle East, Far East and Africa. A Clerk of Works, Bunt was highly regarded within the profession and ran his own consultancy business, later becoming the well respected Chief Clerk of Works with Dundee City Council. Despite his spells abroad, Bunt’s enthusiasm for Tayport FC never waned and he supported the club in many ways as well as sponsoring trophies such as the club’s top scorer award and the Robertson Cup for the fund raising Fun Runs. In recent years following retirement, Bunt was a valued ex-officio member of the club, helping out by organising functions, even calling the bingo numbers and at the time of his death was enthusiastically investigating the possibility of the club becom-ing involved in a Community Asset Transfer. A few paragraphs cannot do justice to a man who loved his football, who had a fund of stories and whose affection for the town and its football club was absolute. Andy is survived by wife Margaret and extended family.

A CHAT WITH CHARLIE
That’s a year you’ve been in charge now, and there’s been a sizeable turnover in players. You start the season without 9 of the squad you inherited.. Would it be fair to say that this is essentially now a squad assembled to your specification?
We have missed out on a few players, I can’t deny, but yes, I’m positive with the players we have and we can go and give it a good shot. The East Region Juniors has seen a huge change since last season and has given Tayport an opportunity to get back to Super League level. Where would you be expecting us to finish in the league this season?
We all believe. We want to go and give a good account of ourselves. A good start is important and that’s what we are concentrating on for now. Your pre-season’s gone pretty well in terms of results, apart from the Broxburn game. Have the performances matched your expectations for a pre-season?
Yes, fairly happy with the way pre-season went. I missed the first one v Broxburn and of course it was a hard one to take but the players have quickly put it behind them
During the close season, you lost three experienced players who were regulars last season. They were also the club’s three top scorers. How confident are you that these gaps will be filled?
Goalscoring and creating chances wasn’t a problem last season and as we’ve started well again this year, I don’t think that will be a problem this season either. Yes, we wanted another attacker but that’s not happened. Two of these players have gone to other teams in the same division. What prompted these two players to leave Tayport to play with clubs at the same level.
Tulleth and Reid were both offered new contracts. Dale’s work commitments meant he could not guarantee his availability so he moved on. Tulleth, a player we loved , but only he could tell you the reason. At the time of writing, you’ve signed three new players. Can you briefly give us a bit background to the signings and what are the strengths which attracted you to these players? Keeper Jack Shaw was recommended to me by Forfar Athletic. Ideally we need two keepers and they’re not that easy to come across. He has settled well and will be pushing Gav for the No. 1 slot. Josh Chalmers has a really good football brain who played well against us last year for Forfar U20s. Steven Duffy adds quality to midfield and also adds that aggressive nature we miss. He’s a great talker, too. Are you now comfortable with the players you’ve got in your pool or do you have any other potential signings in mind? Absolutely but still want to add to it. We still need a striker and we have one training with us just now. With a bit of luck we are also hoping for one more signing, an experienced player.
That’s a year you’ve been in charge now, and there’s been a sizeable turnover in players. You Would it be fair to say that this is

Has the Pyramid Stampede Cost Newburgh?
Newburgh chose not to join the East of Scotland League and because of the way in which the new East Premier Leagues have been split, they find them-selves in the Premier League South Their local derby matches will now be against Lochore Welfare and Kirkcaldy YM, both 20 miles away. Three of their away trips for league games will be round trips of over 110 miles. Harthill is closer to the centre of Glasgow than East Shore Park is to Canniepairt.
St Andrews United did make the conscious decision to join up with the EoSL and their nearest derby match opponents are at Perth (35 mls) and In-verkeithing (40 mls). Most of Saints’ opponents this season are in the Lothians but as can be seen from the map, some clubs in the EoSL are actually in Eng-land!
Jeanfield also elected to join the EoSL but have the benefit of being on the motor-way system and only just make the geo-graphic qualification for the EoSL as their ground is situated on the south bank of the River Tay.
As far as the football authorities are con-cerned, Tayport is on the north bank of the Tay (!?) [that’s why Tayport has nev-er been allowed to enter the Fife & Lothi-ans Cup] therefore ourselves and the Dundee clubs would have been obliged to make application to join the Highland League as opposed to the EoSL. Clearly a no brainer. Although it would have been very interesting if a club did make an application. Tayport did vote in favour of the SJFA joining the Pyramid therefore await the developments with interest.
A number of years ago whilst at top of the Junior game and frustrated at being unable to have a crack at competing in the Senior Scottish Cup, Tayport, hav-ing just won two East Super Leagues titles and a second of three Scottish Jun-ior Cups, actually made enquiries about the possibility of joining the Highland League but the club did not have the physical infrastructure in place to meet the requirements of membership.
Ironically it wasn’t long before winning the Scottish Junior Cup and the East Region Super League gave automatic entry to what is now the William Hill Scottish Cup.
