Lighting
● Light is what makes your photograph- literally● Photography is Greek for “writing with light”● Different lighting scenarios will create different
looks in your images
Kinds of Light
● Natural● Flash● Continuous● Strobe
Natural Light
● Produced by the sun● Most flexible● Best of all FREE● Can be adjusted by the use of modifiers
Natural Light
● Look for light quality● Soft diffused light is good for portraits● Harsh light can be dramatic● Backlighting● Overcast gives a softbox effect● Golden Hour

Modifiers
● Diffusers● Sheer curtains, glass, tree branches; anything that
will soften the light
● Reflectors● Fills in shadows
● Flash● SPARINGLY● On camera flash will flatten your subject.● When possible, bounce the flash off of something
Tips
● Turn your subject to avoid light in their eyes● Move yourself if you can't move the subject● Look for thngs you can use as reflectors- light
surfaces, mirrors, water, etc● Same with diffusers● Pay attention to time of day/sun position- it
makes a difference●
