Dear Teachers,

Thank you so much for being part of the “PigMania” musical experience. We are so excited to bring this high-energy, fun-filled theatrical presentation to your students.

Please have a quick glance through this Teacher’s Resource Guide. Our goal is to give you some quick, easy suggestions to extend the experience of the show into the classroom. Whether you decide to do a major lesson plan or you just photocopy some colouring sheets, we hope that you will find this guide helpful.

This year many classes did not get to come see the show because the performances they wanted were sold out. If you would like to be among the first to find out about next year’s musical, please send us a note at: [email protected] and ask to be notified.

We would also like to make you aware of a program in which your students can re-ceive their own autographed copy of the PigMania CD/CD Rom. The CDs are made available at a discounted price and the school receives a portion of the proceeds. If you are interested please contact Sylvia Callaghan at 905-763-0852 ext.111 or send us an email at the address below.

Thank you again for coming to the show and for helping us to bring more music and theatre into the lives of your students. We would love to have any feedback you can of-fer about the program, this guide, or any other aspect of PigMania. Give your feedback and find out more about other great school programming at: educationarts.ca

Thank you!

Section 1:Colouring Pages & Activity Sheets

The following pages contain colouring pages for PigMania. As with all the material in this guide, you may freely copy and distribute the pages if you are part of a school that has come to see our production of “PigMania”. You may also like to print the colouring pages directly from the elec-tronic/pdf version available at:judyanddavid.com/teachers

Some suggestions...

Colouring sheets can be a great activity to accompany listening to the PigMania CD. Every school that attends the theatrical show should have been supplied with at least one complimentary CD. Additional copies are available online at judyanddavid.com.

The colouring sheets can also be extended into other activities:

• SONG BOOK: Combine with printout of lyrics to make your own PigMania song book

• STORY BOOK: Use the pictures to write and illustrate your own version of the story.

• PUPPET SHOW: Cut out the characters and mount them on cardboard or card stock, backed with popsicle sticks, tongue depressors, etc. to make cardboard puppets. Act out the story of the Three Little Pigs.

• COLLAGE: Combine elements of the colouring sheet with other pictures from magazines, etc. to make a thematic collage and a basis for discussion. Themes could include:

Take your time and do it right! Brainella took her time and worked hard to build a strong brick house while the others did not. What are the conse-quences of rushing? What are the benefits of taking your time and doing it right?

Eating Like A Pig: Frankie and Woody like to eat lots of junk foods. Would this be a good idea for people? Make a collage of Eating Like a Pig and a collage of Eating Like a Person.

Section 2:More Opportunities for Learning

The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears can be used as a catalyst for many learning oppor-tunities – from existing fairy tale curricula to creative classroom activities and discussions. This section contains:

• General Discussion Ideas and Activities

• The “Traditional” Story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The story can be used to read aloud and for purposes of comparison, etc.

• Compare and Contrast worksheet in which students use a Venn diagram to chart the similarities and differences between PigMania and the traditional version

• Retell the Story worksheet in which students break the story up into a beginning, mid-dle, and end

• Story Map worksheet in which students can map the flow of the story

• PigMania Character Sketch worksheet

• PigMania Theatre Review worksheet

• PigMania Lyrics - Sing along!

PigMania • Discussion Ideas And Activities

Discussion Topic: The Moral of the StoryMany stories have a moral, or a lesson that they are trying to teach. This is especially trueof fairy tales. What does the story of the three little pigs try to teach us about the importanceof hard work and planning ahead? Frankie decides to play and party all summerlong at the beach instead of working on his house. What are the consequences of thisdecision? What other lessons does the story teach us?

Discussion Topic: Leaving HomeHow did the three little pigs feel when it was time for them to leave home? How did itmake you feel?

Discussion Topic: Building a houseHow would your house look if you could take all summer to build it? How would it lookif you had to build it in one day? Draw a picture of each one.

Discussion Topic: The Big Bad BullyHow do you feel about the wolf? Is he a bully? Who does he care about most? Whatwould you have done if you were one of the pigs?

Discussion Topic: CooperationIn the end, the pigs work together to get rid of the wolf. In what ways do you worktogether with others?

Discussion Topic: The MusicHow does PigMania use music to help tell the story? (Adds excitement, energy, emotion, conveys moods, etc.)

Activity: Put On a ShowHave your class put on their own version of PigMania. If you have the PigMania CD, youcan use it to help, or you can do a play ‘from scratch’.

Activity: Barnyard Mystery GuestWhisper the name of an animal to a child. The child then stands in front of the group andanswers yes or no questions. The group tries to guess what kind of animal it is from theanswers.

Assignment / Activity: Theatre ReviewHave students write their own theatre reviews and report back to the class.

Assignment / Activity: Character SketchesHave students pick a character from the show and write a character sketch. What aresome of the traits of this character? What does the character like and dislike? What doesthe character look like. Decorate the character sketch with a drawing or with a completedcolouring sheet.

PigMania • Discussion Ideas And Activities(continued)

Activity and Discussion Topic: Dressing Up / Gender ExpressionIn the PigMania show, a male actor plays Mama Pig and, in some shows, the same actor plays the wolf. Dressing up as different characters and different gender roles can be fun. It can also help us see things from different perspectives, and maybe learn something about ourselves and others.

With a big bag of dressup clothes, have students dress up as characters that are all very dif-ferent. How is each character like you? How is each character different from you? Why can dressing up in a way that isn’t expected make other people laugh? How would it make you feel to be laughed at for the way you want to dress, just because it’s not what people are expecting?

Compare and Contrast

IMPORTANT: You may wish to reserve this for older classes.

As with many fairy tales, this story has some violence.

The story of the Three Little Pigs is a folk tale that has been told for hundreds of years. InPigMania, Judy & David took the classic story and made many changes. Below is a veryold version of the story. Read this version and discuss how it is different from PigManiaand how it is the same. Why do you think Judy & David made the choices that they did?How do you feel about the changes? Which parts of the story below do you like better orworse?

The Three Little Pigs

There was an old sow with three little pigs, and as she had not enough to keep them, shesent them out to seek their fortune. The first that went off met a man with a bundle ofstraw, and said to him:

“Please, man, give me that straw to build me a house.”

Which the man did, and the little pig built a house with it. Presently came along a wolf, and knocked at the door, and said:

“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”

To which the pig answered:

“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”

The wolf then answered to that:

“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in.”

So he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew his house in, and ate up the little pig.

The second little pig met a man with a bundle of wood, and said:

“Please, man, give me that wood to build a house.”

Which the man did, and the pig built his house. Then along came the wolf, and said:

“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”

“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.” 1

“Then I’ll puff, and I’ll huff, and I’ll blow your house in.”

So he huffed, and he puffed, and he puffed, and he huffed, and at last he blew the housedown, and he ate up the little pig.

The third little pig met a man with a load of bricks, and said:

“Please, man, give me those bricks to build a house with.”

So the man gave him the bricks, and he built his house with them. So the wolf came, ashe did to the other little pigs, and said:

“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”

“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”

“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in.”

Well, he huffed, and he puffed, and he huffed and he puffed, and he puffed and huffed;but he could not get the house down. When he found that he could not, with all hishuffing and puffing, blow the house down, he said:

“Little pig, I know where there is a nice field of turnips.”

“Where?” said the little pig.

“Oh, in Mr. Smith’s field, and if you will be ready tomorrow morning I will call for you,and we will go together, and get some for dinner.”

“Very well,” said the little pig, “I will be ready. What time are you going to go?”

“Oh, at six o’clock.”

Well, the little pig got up at five, and got the turnips before the wolf came. At six thewolf arrived and said:

“Little Pig, are you ready?”

The little pig said: “Ready! I have been and come back again, and got a nice potful fordinner.”

The wolf felt very angry at this, but thought that he could outsmart the little pig some-how or other, so he said:

2

“Little pig, I know where there is a nice apple-tree.”

“Where?” said the pig.

“Down at Merry-garden,” replied the wolf, “and if you will not trick me I will come foryou, at five o’clock tomorrow and get some apples.”

Well, the little pig woke up the next morning at four o’clock, and went off for the apples, hoping to get back before the wolf came; but he had further to go, and had to climb thetree, so that just as he was coming down from it, he saw the wolf coming, which, as youmay suppose, frightened him very much. When the wolf came up he said:

“Little pig, you were here before me. Are they nice apples?”

“Yes, very,” said the little pig. “I will throw you down one.”

And he threw it so far, that, while the wolf was gone to pick it up, the little pig jumpeddown and ran home. The next day the wolf came again, and said to the little pig:

“Little pig, there is a fair at Shanklin this afternoon, will you go?”

“Oh yes,” said the pig, “I will go; what time will you be ready?”

“At three,” said the wolf. So the little pig went off before the time as usual, and got tothe fair, and bought a butter-churn, which he was going home with, when he saw thewolf coming. Then he could not tell what to do. So he got into the churn to hide, and byso doing turned it round, and it rolled down the hill with the pig in it, which frightenedthe wolf so much, that he ran home without going to the fair. He went to the little pig’shouse, and told him how frightened he had been by a great round thing which camedown the hill past him. Then the little pig said:

“Hah, I frightened you, then. I had been to the fair and bought a butter-churn, and whenI saw you, I got into it, and rolled down the hill.”

Then the wolf was very angry indeed, and declared he would eat up the little pig, andthat he would get down the chimney after him. When the little pig saw what he wasabout to do, he hung a pot full of water, and made up a blazing fire. Just as the wolf wascoming down, the pig took off the cover, and in fell the wolf. So the little pig put on thecover again in an instant, boiled him up, and ate him for supper, and lived happy everafterwards.
