Technology Studies 2013 Sample assessment instrument and indicative response
Design folio: Indicative design folio layout This sample is intended to inform the design of assessment instruments in the senior phase of learning. It highlights the qualities of student work and the match to the syllabus standards.
Dimensions assessed • Analysing design problems
• Applying design factors and communicating
• Synthesising and evaluating designs
Assessment instrument The response presented in this sample is in response to an assessment task.
Designing for a community Year 12 Semester 1 Task The design folio assessment technique requires you to document a design process in response to the identified real-world design problem. Design problem People are sometimes unaware the difficulties they experience in their daily lives can often be improved by identifying the problem/s and devising a solution/s. Context Community, student-identified field Need or opportunity You are to investigate aspects of your local community and identify a need or opportunity that requires a problem solution. Length 1000–1500 words plus a product You will engage in a design process with three stages: • exploring a design problem • developing ideas • producing a product.
In the design process, these stages should lead to the development of new ideas and an innovative product.

The student work has the following characteristics:
• thorough description of design problems and identification of comprehensive and relevant design criteria
• discerning and thorough interpretation of design problems using design factors
• comprehensive and discerning analysis of the impacts of design factors on decisions.
Applying design factors and communicating
The student work has the following characteristics:
• comprehensive application of design factors to develop and progress a range of feasible ideas
• discriminating and proficient use of manufacturing technologies, materials and efficient project management skills to produce products in an accurate response to design criteria
• succinct and effective use of communication suited to modes and audiences.
Synthesising and evaluating designs
The student work has the following characteristics:
• discerning synthesis of ideas to develop innovative concepts that insightfully solve design problems
• valid and thorough justification of decisions and well-reasoned recommendations
• discerning and thorough evaluation of ideas and products using design criteria.
Note: Colour highlights have been used to indicate the match of the qualities of the student response with the standards descriptors within each dimension.
