CHILDREN AT RISK is pleased to share the Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap
to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools with you. We hope that this
resource will serve as an important tool as you and your child navigate the public
school system. Because education is one of the most important influences in setting
your child on the right path for future success, it is important to find the school that
is the best fit for your child. That may look different for different students, and can
include certain athletic programs, course offerings, learning styles or a variety of
other factors.
At CHILDREN AT RISK, we know that there are many quality options for public
education available from neighborhood schools, charter schools, and schools with
magnet programs. We also know that it can be difficult to understand the true quality
of your student’s school, and what you can do to ensure your child receives the best
education possible.
We hope that the Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth
ISD Area Public Schools will provide you with the information you need to make
the best school decision for your child. We look forward to providing this resource

5Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools | CHILDREN AT RISK
Parents today are faced with a myriad of choices in public education, including
traditional public schools, magnet schools and programs, and charter schools. Each
option comes with its own system to navigate, and some also involve a complex ap-
plication process. CHILDREN AT RISK has developed Texas School Guide: A Parent’s
Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools to serve as a one-stop-
shop for parents as they navigate these systems.
Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public
Schools has three main goals. We hope to empower parents to:
1. Understand How Local Schools are Performing
2. Become Aware of their School Options
3. Become Advocates for High Quality Public Schools
The Parent Action Guides contain helpful information and tips on early childhood
education, higher education, school choice, and parent advocacy to help parents
navigate the decision-making process. The school profiles included in this guide pro-
vide detailed demographic, performance and school asset data, when available, on
the public schools in the Fort Worth ISD area, as well as information on independent
charter schools that fall within the district zip codes. In the school profile section you
will see a letter grade associated with each school that will read:
A+, A, A-, B+, B, B- C+, C, C-, D, F or Not Available (NA)
You will also see school rankings that indicate
how well the school is performing in com-
parison to other schools in the state. Each
school’s profile will include their ranking out
of the total number of schools ranked for that
grade level in Texas.
State Ranking: Individual School Ranking /
Total Schools Ranked for that Grade Level
across the State
If you find that your school is not ranked or
graded highly, we encourage you to visit the
Parent Action Guides to understand your op-
tions and what steps you might take. In some
cases, you may find a charter school that bet-
ter meets your needs, or you might find that
you are eligible for a within-district transfer.
You might also decide that changing schools
is not the best option for you and your child.
Introduction: How to Use This Guide

You can view all of this information online at
TexasSchoolGuide.org and search for schools
based on various characteristics: school type,
grade level, school assets or programs, and dis-
tance. It is important to remember that many
factors contribute to making a school a good fit
for your child. Only you can decide what is most
important when making that decision. Regardless
of your choice, we hope that Texas School Guide:

What Are My School Choice Options?
8 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
What Are My School Choice Options? What is School Choice?School choice is choosing a school for your child based on the qualities of the school
and your child’s needs, rather than on your home address. While school choice op-
tions vary from district to district, parents do have alternatives to the traditional
neighborhood school the district assigns your child to attend. When considering other
public school options for children, parents may consider charter schools as well as
magnet schools and programs. No type of school is inherently superior, and to deter-
mine which school is right for your child, you must research the individual schools.
CHILDREN AT RISK gives a letter grade of A,
B, C, D, or F to schools throughout the state of
Texas, with schools with an A letter grade be-
ing the highest performing. CHILDREN AT RISK
considers D and F schools to be of lower qual-
ity and underperforming in some areas. For the
purpose of Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Road-
map to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public
Schools, the schools’ letter grades have been
further differentiated with pluses or minuses
to give parents a more in depth look at school
quality. Schools with a letter grade of A, B, and C
range are considered acceptable options for stu-
dent success. If your child is attending a traditional neighborhood school that is lower
performing, you may want to consider what other options you have. Options include
transferring your child to a different school within the district, applying to a magnet
program, opting for a charter school, or improving the quality of your child’s current
school from within.
These options are described in greater detail in this section:
• Visiting a School: Questions to Ask and Things to Look For
• Understanding Your Options: What are Neighborhood Schools, Charter Schools,
Magnet Schools / Programs (Programs and Schools of Choice), and Private
Schools?
• Transfer Options within Fort Worth ISD
• Charter School Options and the Application Process
• Programs and Schools of Choice Options and the Application Process
Visiting a SchoolIf you choose to send your child to another school, you should visit the individual cam-
puses and consider what matters most to you and your family. Here is a list of ques-
tions to ask, as well as important things to look for when visiting a school:
Questions to Ask When Visiting a School• What is the school’s mission? The mission statement is usually a summary state-
ment of the school’s values and purpose.
Parents do have alternatives to the traditional neighborhood
school the district assigns your child
to attend
9Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools | CHILDREN AT RISK
• What is the school’s approach to safety and
discipline?
• How does the school monitor student prog-
ress?
• What strategies do teachers use to teach
students with limited English proficiency?
• How do students get to school? Is bus trans-
portation available?
• Are free or reduced-price meals offered?
• What extracurricular opportunities are avail-
able for students?
• How do fine arts fit into the curriculum?
• What rules and systems are most important in classrooms?
• Are there opportunities for parents to get involved?
• What systems are in place for students that are struggling?
• What is the typical class size? What is the maximum class size?
• If a child is excelling academically, are there advanced courses or enrichment pro-
grams?
• How is technology used to support teaching and learning?
• What are the school’s greatest accomplishments?
• What are the school’s greatest challenges?
• How do teachers communicate with parents?
• Are parent-teacher conferences scheduled regularly throughout the year?
• What is the student attrition rate? The student attrition rate represents the num-
bers of students dropping out.
• What is the teacher attrition rate? The teacher attrition rate represents the number
of teachers leaving the school.
Things to Look For When Visiting a School• Do teachers interact with their students in a positive manner?
• Do classrooms look cheerful?
• Are the students well-behaved as they transition in the hallways and play outside?
• Do the school’s administrators interact positively with students, teachers, and par-
ents?
• Are the classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and outside areas of the school clean and
well maintained?
• Are students adequately supervised by school personnel?
• Do students engage with each other in a positive way?
• Are the teachers keeping students engaged and thinking critically?
Understanding Your Options
What Are Neighborhood Schools?A neighborhood school is the school that a child is assigned to based on their home
address, and according to the district’s boundaries and attendance zones. These
boundaries change frequently, so you should call your school to confirm which neigh-
borhood school your child has been assigned to before enrolling.
10 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
What Are Charter Schools?Charter schools are public schools that operate independently of local school districts.
They are tuition-free and publicly funded by local, state, and federal dollars. In addition,
charter schools also receive private donations. Charter schools are open to any student
within a specified region that wishes to apply. Because applications exceed the space
available at charter schools, many charter schools use a lottery system to determine
enrollment. Although charter schools are subject to the same rules and regulations as
traditional public schools, they generally enjoy greater flexibility. For example, some
charter schools have a longer school day and school year than traditional schools.
What Are Magnet Schools / Programs (Programs and Schools of Choice)?Magnet schools are public schools that are either run by a school district or a group of
school districts. These schools are named magnet schools because they tend to draw
students from different attendance zone boundaries. In Fort Worth ISD these schools
and programs are called Programs and Schools of Choice. The curriculum of a program
or school of choice school is aligned to a particular focus area, such as Science Tech-
nology Engineering Mathematics (STEM), performing arts, leadership, or certain career
paths. These programs require an application, and some are selective while others use
a lottery system. Because these programs and schools are specialized, they are able
to offer a more intensive education in their focus area than traditional public schools.
Some choice programs are housed within traditional public schools, while others are
housed on their own campus. In some cases, several programs are housed together on
one campus.
What Are Private Schools?Private schools are schools that are not supported by the government. Private schools
receive their funding from individuals or a private organization and usually require
students to pay tuition. The application process is similar to the college application
process for a student and includes applications, admission tests, interviews, financial
aid applications, etc. Private schools can have a religious affiliation or be independent.
Although this guide does not profile private schools, they are one of the available op-
tions for parents in the Fort Worth area.
Transfer Options within Fort Worth ISD
Although a student’s neighborhood school is determined by their home address, in
Fort Worth ISD students can apply for transfer requests to other schools that better
match their needs or interests if they meet the requirements listed below. All transfer
requests are subject to availability and application deadlines. You should contact the
District directly to learn about the most current deadlines.
It is also important to note that the transfer options listed in this section do not refer
to the program and schools of choice options, which are listed in the next section. The
three main ways to transfer from one school to another school in Fort Worth ISD are:
WHAT ARE MY SCHOOL CHOICE OPTIONS? cont.
11Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools | CHILDREN AT RISK
1. Elementary Student Transfers: Initiated because of student/family needs
2. Secondary Student Transfers: Initiated because of student/family needs
3. Public Education Grant (PEG) School Transfers: Initiated because of the school’s
performance
Elementary and Secondary Student TransfersThe transfer process in Fort Worth ISD differs depending on whether the student is in
elementary or secondary school (middle and high school). All transfers are subject to
approval and space availability. Elementary school transfers are handled by the indi-
vidual school principals, but secondary school transfers are coordinated by the Central
Office Staff. For current information regarding transfer policies, contact:
Elementary School Leadership: (817) 814-2310
Secondary School Leadership: (817) 814-2340
Students who transfer from one school to another school do not become part of the
new school’s feeder pattern. This will impact students when they are transitioning from
elementary to middle school or middle school to high school because students will
return to their attendance zone feeder school (neighborhood school) after 5th or 8th
grade. At the time of this publication, the typical transfer window for elementary and
secondary school transfers is the first three weeks of March.
ELEMENTARY STUDENT TRANSFER (Elementary Schools)
Reasons for Transfer Process
• To go from a majority school to minority school
(example: a student representing the majority
race/ethnicity at a school can apply to transfer
to a school where he or she would be in the
minority)
• To solve transportation difficulties
• To solve parent or student employment conflicts
• To accommodate availability of before and/or
after school childcare
• To attend a school with a program not offered in
the home school
• Contact the new school to file the transfer
request and determine space availability
• The new school’s principal either accepts or
denies the transfer request and signs the transfer
form if accepted
• Complete paperwork and have the transfer
form signed by the neighborhood school for
withdrawal and re-enrollment
SECONDARY STUDENT TRANSFER (Middle Schools and High Schools)
Reasons for Transfer Process
• To go from a majority school to minority school
(example: a student representing the majority
race/ethnicity at a school can apply to transfer
to a school where he or she would be in the
minority)
• To solve transportation difficulties
• To solve employment conflicts
• To attend a school with a program not offered in
the home school
• Principals in neighborhood school and new
school must approve transfer request
• The Central Office evaluates the transfer request
based on a variety of characteristics, including
academic performance and discipline history

12 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
PEG TransfersParents should also be advised that students are eligible to transfer if they are attend-
ing a Public Education Grant (PEG) designated school. PEG schools are low-perform-
ing schools where 50% or more of the students did not pass any of the TAKS/STAAR
subjects in any two of the preceding three years, or schools that were recently rated
Academically Unacceptable by the Texas Education Agency. Every year, the state pro-
vides a list of PEG-designated schools to districts, and districts must notify the parents
of a student assigned to a PEG-designated school of the school’s PEG status by Febru-
ary 1st. To locate a list of PEG designated schools, and to learn more about this pro-
gram, visit the Texas Education Agency’s website at ritter.tea.state.tx.us/perfreport/
peg_faq.html.
Charter School Options and the Application Process
Any student residing in Fort Worth ISD is eligible to apply to the charter schools listed
below, though this list is not exhaustive. Some charter schools also allow students out-
side of the district to apply, but priority may be given to those residing within the dis-
trict. Most charter schools operate on a lottery system. This means that the school uses
a random selection process to pick its students. If your child is on a charter school’s
waiting list, it may help to follow up with the school to let the school know that you are
interested in getting off the waiting list if space becomes available.

While many applications can be submitted online, the process depends on the school.
In addition, some schools require supplemental documents or an interview/audition.
Visit each of the school’s websites to learn more about current deadlines and applica-
tion procedures.
Programs and Schools of Choice and the Application Process
Fort Worth ISD offers various programs of choice for students who are interested in
career-oriented or specialized curriculum, in addition to traditional academic subjects.
The three main categories of choice include:
1. Programs of Choice
2. Schools of Choice
3. Gold Seal Programs of Choice
Programs of Choice are offered at various middle
and elementary schools and engage students in
a wide array of learning experiences, including in-
tensive focus on certain subjects, such as science,
math, art, foreign language and communication.
Fort Worth ISD Schools of Choice primarily
serve students in a nontraditional setting. These
schools are stand-alone facilities that can span
elementary, middle, and high school grade levels.
Gold Seal Programs of Choice are available at
every Fort Worth ISD high school and prepare
high school students for work after graduation,
as well as specialized coursework. The programs
include, but are not limited to, licensures and
certifications, dual college credit, internship opportunities and real world application
experiences.
Application requirements vary by school, but many require only the choice application.
You can submit a paper application or apply online during the application period at
www.fwisd.org/pages/FWISD/Departments_Programs/Departments__A-K_/Choices/
Application___Selection.
Any student who is interested in a Program of Choice or School of Choice must submit
an application, even if the program or school is at the home school campus. Students
may apply to up to three programs, ranked on the application in order of preference.
Transportation is provided to Fort Worth ISD students if they choose a program or
school that is not available at their neighborhood school. Admission is based on a
computer-generated random selection process.
14 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools

PARENT ACTION GUIDES
How Can I Get Involved at MyChild’s School?
18 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
How Can I Get Involved at My Child’s School?
Parent involvement is a leading factor in student success and outcomes. Students
with involved parents are more likely than their peers with uninvolved parents to earn
better grades, attend school regularly, have positive attitudes about school, and be
better behaved. As a result, parents can help their children succeed by becoming an
education advocate. Taking the time to be involved in your child’s education not only
allows you to ensure your child is receiving the quality education he or she deserves,
but also shows your student how important their academic success is to your family.
Advocating for your child’s education means making sure that your child is getting
the very best education possible.
In this section you can learn how to:
• Build relationships with people at your child’s school.
• Join parent organizations on campus.
• Find your School Board Representative.
• Access services provided by community organizations.
Building RelationshipsThe first step to becoming an advocate for
your child’s education is to form relationships
with teachers, counselors, coaches, and ad-
ministrators at your child’s school. Forming
these relationships early in your child’s time at
school will make you feel comfortable going
to these people when problems or questions
come up.
If you have felt frustrated and do not under-
stand the school process, or just have not had
the opportunity to form these relationships,
here are some great ways to get started:
• Attend school events, such as open houses, performances or award ceremonies.
• Join district groups, such as the School Health Advisory Council that focuses on
health and nutrition policies within the district.
• Join parent groups or organizations at your child’s school.
• Get involved in after school programs that your child is involved in.
• Volunteer with the school or in your child’s classroom.
• Vote in the School Board of Trustees election.
• Request a conference with your child’s teacher, counselor, or school administra-
tor. If you work during the school day, you can request a conference at a time that
works for you.
The first step to becoming an
advocate for your child’s education
is to form relationships
19Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools | CHILDREN AT RISK
Outside of attending events and direct contact with the school, you can advocate for
your child by communicating the importance of education. You can do this by:
• Making sure your child attends school regularly.
• Making sure your child does their homework.
• Making sure your child gets to school on time.
• Regularly checking your child’s progress through Parent Portal at
https://parentportal.fwisd.org to identify any problems early. On Parent Portal you
have access to many school related indicators, including your student’s grades,
homework assignments, and teacher contact information.
Parent Groups and OrganizationsParent Teacher Associations (PTA’s), Par-
ent Teacher Student Associations (PTSA’s),
and Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO’s)
engage and empower parents to become
advocates for their children. Although these
organizations have similar missions, the PTA
is connected to a local, state, or national
association, while the PTO is specific to an
individual school campus.
Many parent organizations keep parents
involved and informed about what is going
on at school. This might include organiz-
ing a school fundraiser, working with teachers or providing parent trainings on how to
get involved at school. If you are interested in getting involved in these organizations,
contact your school’s office about how to join. If your school does not currently have
a PTA, PTSA or a PTO, you can start one.
Organizing a Parent Teacher Association:
Any school official, parent or interested person can organize a PTA. First, gain the
support of your school principal or superintendent, and multiple teachers. For
more information about organizing a new local PTA, contact the Director of Mem-
ber Services, Mary Jo Burgess, [email protected] or 1-800-TALK-PTA or visit
their website at www.txpta.org.
Organizing a Parent Teacher Organization:
To start a PTO, organize a group of interested people, agree on a common goal,
and start working together to make it happen. Examples include running an ice
cream social for parents, students and teachers to get to know one another, or a
school fundraiser to raise money. Because every PTO is an independent organiza-
tion, bylaws vary by organization. Learn more about organizing a PTO at
www.ptotoday.com.
Note that some PTA’s and PTO’s have small membership fees.

Fort Worth ISD Board of TrusteesThe Fort Worth ISD School Board includes nine trustees that are elected by residents
of the individual districts. Trustees have a variety of responsibilities including setting
policies for the District, hiring the Superintendent of Schools, securing financing for the
District, and continuously evaluating school performance. According to the Fort Worth
ISD website, “Regular board meetings are open to the public. Meetings are televised
live on Charter Cable Channel 30, AT&T U-Verse 99, and via live streaming video on the
District website’s Video on Demand. Minutes may be reviewed in the Superintendent’s
office in the administration building, 100 N. University Drive.” You can learn more about
the Fort Worth ISD’s board policy online at http://pol.tasb.org/Home/Index/1101.

Community OrganizationsLocal community centers, churches, and nonprofit organizations are important resourc-
es for parent involvement. Some organizations offer parent trainings that can help you
learn how to request and have successful conferences with teachers, counselors and
school administrators. Here is a brief list of organizations that are working with stu-
dents and parents in the community:

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED AT MY CHILD’S SCHOOL? cont.
PARENT ACTION GUIDES
Early ChildhoodEducation(Ages 0-5)
22 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
Early Childhood Education(Ages 0-5)
Deciding on a childcare or preschool program for your child can be a daunting and
stressful task. There are many issues to consider including quality, location, cost, and
hours of operation. Fortunately, many of these issues can be resolved with a quick
phone call or visit to the program’s website. Unfortunately, quality, the main concern
for parents, requires more effort.
Why is Early Childhood Education Important? The first five years of a child’s life are the most
important in brain development. During this
time, children acquire knowledge at a more
rapid rate than at any other period in their life.
Children who attend high quality early educa-
tion programs are more likely to: be ready for
kindergarten, score better on standardized
tests, go to college, and have higher paying
jobs as adults. A supportive and engaging early
childhood education program is important be-
cause it starts infants and toddlers on the path
to success.
What Should You Look For in a Childcare or Preschool Program?Early childhood education programs such as prekindergarten and academically fo-
cused childcare set children up to be successful students before they ever step into a
kindergarten classroom. These programs should provide children with developmen-
tally appropriate instruction in vocabulary, early literacy, phonemic awareness, math,
and many other areas that students often struggle with during their elementary
years. In addition, these programs should also help children to become more com-
fortable with routine and structure.
Licensed childcare facilities are monitored and regulated by the Texas Department
of Family and Protective Services. The state routinely inspects these facilities and
enforces basic health and safety standards. Records of the state’s inspections are
publicly available at www.dontbeinthedark.org. In addition, the National Associa-
tion for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredits and certifies centers.
The NAEYC standards are much higher than the state’s minimum standards. A list of
centers accredited by NAEYC is available at www.naeyc.org/academy/accreditation/
search.
After checking the program’s accreditation status and the state’s records for viola-
tions and compliance, you should visit the center to gain a better sense of both the
physical and emotional environment.
23Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools | CHILDREN AT RISK
Visiting the CenterDuring your visit, plan to spend 20-30 minutes
talking to staff and observing their morning
or afternoon routines (circle time, book reads,
and center time are the best times to observe).
If possible, avoid visiting during meal and nap
times as you will be less likely to see the qual-
ity of learning activities between the staff and
children.
Things to pay attention to include:
Physical Environment:
Classrooms and areas for children should be
open and visible from any other point within
the classroom. This ensures that the teachers can always see your child and make
sure that your child is not at risk for injury or participating in unsafe activities. Age
appropriate materials such as alphabet posters, letter walls, calendars, and weather
and reading charts should be at your child’s eye level (not near the ceiling or at an
adult’s eye level). For classrooms serving children three years and older, look for
evidence of: writing (both children’s and teacher’s), sorting, counting, as well as
number, letter and word recognition. These are all good signs that the program is
working on academic enrichment activities.
Emotional Environment:
Students should feel safe to share their thoughts and feelings in the classroom.
The classroom should not be a place for unkind words, bullying, or verbal abuse,
as these are detrimental to the child’s well-being and social development. Ask staff
specifically about their discipline policies. Also watch how staff members relate to
one another and to the children both in and out of the classroom.
Teacher Qualifications Ask teachers and staff about their qualifications. You are trusting your child to their
program and have the right to make sure they are qualified and capable professionals.
Early childhood teachers should have formal training in the field of early childhood
education so that they may adequately provide the instruction and care that your child
deserves. The state of Texas requires a high school diploma or GED, 24 hours of pre-
service training, and 24 hours of annual continuing education for early childcare pro-
fessionals. Suggested teacher trainings include classes on curriculum, safety practices,
first aid, and emergency preparedness. Below are the most common qualifications for
early childhood instructors.
• Early Childhood Associates Degree / Child Development Associates Degree from
an accredited program: teachers holding this degree have spent two years acquir-
ing knowledge on how to provide the appropriate environment and curriculum to
children in their classroom.
During your visit, plan to spend 20-30 minutes talking to staff and observing
their morning or afternoon routines
24 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
• Bachelor’s Degree in Education (or another field) with a teaching certificate
from the state specifying an Early Childhood qualification: teachers holding this
degree and certification have rigorous training in classroom management, curricu-
lum, and at least one semester of practicum in a classroom under the observation
of a mentor teacher.
Other Things to Consider and Ask About:• Waiting lists: Many early childhood programs have waiting lists and a registration
process, including a non-refundable deposit.
• Food menus: Some programs ask parents to provide the food for their child, while
others offer meals and snacks. For those that serve food, menus should be avail-
able to give you an example of the types of foods being served. If parents are
expected to provide meals and snacks, ask how the food is stored throughout the
day (refrigerator or at room temperature) so you know what you should pack.
• Time spent on the playground: Children should spend 30-45 minutes on the play-
ground in the morning and afternoon (weather permitting).
• Screen time (TV and Computers): It is recommended that screen time be limited
to no more than one to two hours per day for children over two years of age.
• Childcare assistance: Families meeting specific requirements (financial and other
factors) are eligible for childcare assistance. Check with your local workforce
solutions office to see if you qualify for childcare assistance. To locate your local
workforce solutions office, go to www.twc.state.tx.us/dirs/wdas/directory-offices-
services.html.

Preparing for Post-Secondary Education(High School Students)
There are many options for higher education
in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, including
four-year colleges, two-year colleges, and trade
schools. An advanced degree or certification
can create employment opportunities that
may not be available to those with only a high
school diploma. It is important to set expecta-
tions for post-secondary education, or contin-
ued education after high school, early so that
children are encouraged to set goals that help
them obtain those degrees. In this section you
will learn more about:
• Post-Secondary Education Opportunities in
the Area
• The Application Process
• Financial Aid Resources
• How Students Can Stay on Track with a High School Timeline
Post-Secondary Education Opportunities in the AreaIt is helpful to be knowledgeable about the different opportunities for post-secondary
education early in your child’s high school career. This way you can make sure that
you do not miss important application deadlines, required high school courses for
particular programs, or other steps that must be taken prior to admittance into a
higher education program.

If your child intends to pursue higher education, you may want to consider the rigor
of the high school they attend. High schools that provide good preparation for college
should offer an academically challenging curriculum, a college-bound culture, and a
support system for navigating college admissions. Indicators of these characteristics
can include:
• Wide offering of advanced courses like Advanced Placement (AP), International
Baccalaureate (IB), and/or Honors courses
• High rate of students taking the SAT or ACT exams
• Available and knowledgeable guidance counselors
ApplicationsMost post-secondary tracks require
some kind of application. Community
colleges have an open-door admissions
policy, which means that students are
admitted regardless of previous aca-
demic history. However, parents and stu-
dents should be advised that students
in Texas entering a public college insti-
tution, including community colleges,
must meet the minimum threshold on
the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assess-
ment unless they are otherwise exempt. If students do not meet this threshold, they
may be referred to Adult Basic Education classes, which are non-credit and fee-based,
before they are eligible to enroll in college coursework. You can learn more about this
requirement at http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/.
The Common App and Apply Texas are two widely used application processes for
four-year colleges and universities. The Common App is used by hundreds of colleges
throughout the United States, and Apply Texas allows students to apply for admis-
sion to any Texas public university, as well as to participating community and private
colleges. To learn more about which schools accept these applications, application
deadlines, and additional information visit the individual sites:

It is necessary to visit individual websites, or contact the schools directly, to verify the
most current application procedures because admissions requirements can vary from
school to school.
Financial AidThe costs associated with higher education can be daunting for parents, families and
students. However, being aware of financial aid opportunities that are at your disposal
can help ease your concerns. Each university or college has their own financial aid
program, which may include grant and scholarship opportunities, and there are also
opportunities to obtain financial aid through the state and federal government, non-
profit and private organizations.
You should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), as it is will
make your student eligible for the largest source of financial aid available. The applica-
tion becomes available in early January, but deadlines differ by program. You will want
to submit the FAFSA as early as possible to make sure that you can take advantage of
as many aid opportunities as possible.
There are several ways to file the FAFSA:
• Online at www.fafsa.gov.
• You can download or order a paper FAFSA.
• Ask the financial aid office at your student’s college or career school if it can be
filed there.
Here is a brief look at financial aid opportunities and when you should fill out the
FASFA from the Federal Student Aid website:
High School TimelineIt is important to plan ahead for higher education while your child is still in high
school. In order to apply to a four-year university or college, your child will need to
take the SAT and/or ACT exam, typically during their junior year of high school. You
also should be aware of the admissions requirements of the program(s) your child
may wish to attend, so that they will be sure to fulfill all prerequisites during high
PREPARING FOR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION cont.
AID PROGRAM DEADLINE INFORMATION
Federal and State student aid For the 2013–14 year, you can apply between Jan. 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014. However, there are a few first come, first served federal stu-dent aid programs, so be sure to apply as soon as you can. You can
also find state deadlines at www.fafsa.gov.
College or career school aid Check the school’s website or contact its financial aid office. School deadlines are usually early in the year (often in February or March). Furthermore, many schools will offer work-study programs, which place students into part-time jobs or paid internships as a form of
financial assistance.
Other financial aid Some programs, other than government or school aid, require that you file the FAFSA. For instance, you cannot get certain private
scholarships unless you are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant–and you cannot find out whether you are eligible for a Pell Grant unless you file a FAFSA. If the private scholarship’s application deadline is in
early to mid–January, you will need to submit your FAFSA before that deadline.

school. For example, some universities may re-
quire more science or math course credits than
your child’s high school requires as the mini-
mum. Your child may also need to take elective
courses to be adequately prepared for college.
Here is an example of a timeline that can help
students stay on track to obtaining an ad-
vanced degree or certification:
Freshman and Sophomore Years• Talk with your assigned guidance counselor about taking college preparatory
courses and exploring higher education options.
• Start getting involved in extra-curricular activities and keep a record of involve-
ment.
• Register and take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT).
• Schedule a college tour of an area college to get a feel for what college might be
like. These tours are free and you can call the admissions office to schedule a tour
at a time that works well for you.
Junior Year• Work with your guidance counselor to establish a list of the higher education op-
tions that you are interested in. It may be helpful to consider how long it usually
takes students to graduate from that school. You can find more information on
college completion rates by campus at completecollege.org.
• Begin researching scholarship and financial aid opportunities.
• Register and take the SAT and/or ACT exams.
• If possible, visit the individual campuses that you will be applying to.
Senior Year• August – September
» Narrow down school options and create a list of application deadlines and
required materials, including scholarship and financial aid deadlines, essays,
letters of recommendation and transcripts.
» Register or retake SAT and/or ACT exam if necessary.
» Begin thinking about who to request your letters of recommendation from.
» Request transcripts from your high school.
• October – November
» Draft any required college admissions or scholarship essays.
» Secure letters of recommendation if required. It is best to request letters of
recommendation at least one to two months in advance of the application
deadline. This allows the recommender time to complete and submit a quality
recommendation.
» Ensure that your transcripts are accurate.
• December – January
» Final application dates for many schools. However, note that early decision
30 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
applications are typically due in November.
• February – March
» College acceptance letters begin to arrive.
» Parents need to file taxes to prepare for filling out the FAFSA. Remember to
complete the FAFSA by the priority deadline.
• April – May
» Review your admissions information and submit any required materials to
the college or program of your choice. This may include housing information,
final transcripts, a potential deposit, etc.

120 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
Guide OrganizationThe school profiles are organized by grade level: elementary schools, middle schools,
and high schools. A map is provided at the beginning of each grade level to help par-
ents understand where schools are located in comparison to one another. This allows
parents to locate a school on the map and identify other nearby schools to better
understand how they are performing in comparison with one another.
School ProfilesThe schools profiled in this guide include all Fort Worth ISD public schools, including
magnet campuses, and charter schools located in the same zip codes as the district
schools. Disciplinary Alternative Education Programs and private schools are exclud-
ed from the school profiles. All contact information and data from the Campus Profile
and Report Card sections come directly from the Texas Education Agency. Note that
while the CHILDREN AT RISK Graduation Rate utilizes data from the Texas Education
Agency, it is specifically calculated by CHILDREN AT RISK. See the definitions below
for further clarification.
School Rankings and Letter GradesThe numerical rankings and letter grades
come from CHILDREN AT RISK’s 2013 Pub-
lic School Rankings. To rank public schools
across Texas, CHILDREN AT RISK compiles
and analyzes the latest data collected by
the Texas Education Agency. CHILDREN AT
RISK utilizes a diverse array of indicators,
holding schools accountable for perfor-
mance on standardized testing in addition
to other measures such as performance on
college entrance exams, participation in ad-
vanced coursework, and graduation rates. Much like the methodology used by other
institutions to rank higher education programs (e.g., MBA programs and law schools),
CHILDREN AT RISK’s method uses the z-score statistic to standardize the data com-
pared to all campuses across the state and compute a ranking.
• School Rankings: CHILDREN AT RISK’s 2013 Public School Rankings, ranked a total
of 7,070 schools across the state. Each school’s profile will include their ranking
out of the total number of schools ranked for that grade level in Texas.
» State Ranking: Individual School Ranking / Total Schools Ranked for that Grade
Level Across the State
• Letter grades: All schools were assigned a letter grade, based on their weighted
composite z-score. In order to create cut-off scores for each letter grade, dummy
schools were created that represent the minimum performing school for each
letter grade level. The dummy schools were put into the rankings calculations to
Methodology
121Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools | CHILDREN AT RISK
see what their z-scores would be as com-
pared to the included schools, and these
z-scores were used as the cut-offs for each
letter grade. Once schools were assigned
a general letter grade, A, B, and C grades
were further differentiated into plus/mi-
nus grades. The range of z-scores for each
letter grade was divided evenly into thirds.
The top third of z-scores became “plus”
grades and the bottom third of z-scores
became “minus” grades. In this guide, you
will see the following grades: A+, A, A-, B+,
B, B-, C+, C, C-, D, F, or Not Available (NA).
The IndicatorsCampus Profile Indicators:
• Student Diversity: The percentage of students in each category of ethnicity or race.
• Economically Disadvantaged Students: The percentage of students that are eco-
nomically disadvantaged, i.e., coded as eligible for free or reduced-price lunch or
eligible for other public assistance.
• Special Education Students: The percentage of students served by programs for
students with disabilities.
• Student - Teacher Ratio: The number of students at the school divided by the num-
ber of teachers at the school. This indicator represents the number of students for
every one teacher at the school.
• Total Enrollment: The total number of students enrolled at that campus.
Performance Indicators:
• Advanced Courses: The percentage of students in grades 9-12 who received credit
for at least one advanced course (including Advanced Placement, International Bac-
calaureate, Dual Enrollment, and others).

graduated from any public high school in Texas within four, five, or six years of en-
tering ninth grade.
• Average Class Size: The average number of students in a 3rd grade classroom at
that campus. The Texas Education Agency defines the allowable class size limit for
grades kindergarten through four to be 22 pupils, though campuses may request an
exception.
• Math Gains Score: The average gain or loss on normal curve equivalent score on all
Math state standardized tests taken by students at a particular campus, compared
to the same students’ performance on all Math state standardized tests the year
before. The gains score is only calculated for students who took tests at the same
campus for two consecutive years.
• Reading Gains Score: The average gain or loss on normal curve equivalent score on
all Reading state standardized tests taken by students at a particular campus, com-
pared to the same students’ performance on all Reading state standardized tests
the year before. The gains score is only calculated for students who took tests at
the same campus for two consecutive years.

Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) examination.
The Performance ScaleTo classify performance on the Report Card, statewide data was used to calculate
quartiles for each indicator.
• 3+ Above Average: The school’s indicator for that category scored in the top 25%
statewide.
• 3 Average: The school’s indicator for that category scored in the middle 50%
statewide.
• 3- Below Average: The school’s indicator scored in the bottom 25% statewide.
Any field labeled “NA” indicates that data was unavailable from the Texas Education
Agency at the time of publication.

TexasSchoolGuide.org.
School AssetsIn September 2013, CHILDREN AT RISK conducted a survey to identify the different
programs, or “school assets,” available on individual campuses. An online survey was
emailed to the school principal designated in the Texas Education Agency’s Texas
Education Directory. The survey was emailed three times, and if no response was
gathered CHILDREN AT RISK staff members conducted follow-up phone calls to the
individual schools. During those calls, school asset information was collected from a
variety of school personnel, including, but not limited to, office managers, assistant
principals, and school counselors.
The school assets that appear in this guide were selected based on information gath-
ered through an online parent survey, a series of three parent focus groups, and infor-
mation reported in the school survey. While schools were asked to report whether or
not they were a magnet school campus, the magnet program (program or school of
choice) identification that appears in the school profiles was generated from the lists
METHODOLOGY cont.
123Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools | CHILDREN AT RISK
on the district’s website. School assets included in the elementary, middle, and high
school profiles are as follows:
• Art Classes
• After School Program
• Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB),
College/Dual Credit Options
• Sports/Athletic Programs
• Before School Program
• College Counseling
• Music Classes
• Pre-k Program (Full Day)
It is important to note that the school asset information has been self-reported by a
school representative or staff member, and is subject to change at any time. This sur-
vey was viewed as an opportunity for schools to share additional information about
the programs available on their campuses. CHILDREN AT RISK understands that not
all schools had the time, or the resources to complete this survey.
If you are a school administrator and believe that your school’s asset data is incorrect
or has not been included in this guide, please visit TexasSchoolGuide.org to update
this information.
CHILDREN AT RISK will make every effort to include updated and current school as-
set data at TexasSchoolGuide.org and in the next edition of Texas School Guide: A
Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools.
Here is a list of terms that appear in Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Suc-
cess in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools that may be confusing or new to parents.
Please contact us to let us know if you find any other terms confusing and we will be
happy to consider defining them in future editions.
Advanced Placement Courses (AP): These rigorous courses are a part of the Ad-
vanced Placement Program (AP Program) and are offered at many high schools. AP
Courses are taught by highly qualified teachers, offer college-level curriculum, and
culminate with an AP Exam. Some colleges accept high scores on AP Exams to fulfill
college course credits.
Charter School: Charter schools are public schools that operate independently of lo-
cal school districts. They are tuition-free and open to any student within a specified
region that wishes to apply, but frequently use a lottery system for enrollment due to
high demand.
Early Education (EE): The Texas Education Agency reports the grade levels that are
represented at each school. Early Education (EE) is a grade level for students be-
tween the ages of zero and five who have not been placed in prekindergarten (PK) or
Glossary of Terms
124 CHILDREN AT RISK | Texas School Guide: A Parent’s Roadmap to Success in Fort Worth ISD Area Public Schools
kindergarten (KG). This includes students in Head Start programs who do not meet
the requirements for state funds.
International Baccalaureate (IB): The IB Program is a rigorous, focused curriculum
for juniors and seniors in high schools. It offers advanced coursework and, similar to
AP, involves subject tests leading to the IB Diploma. The IB Program is recognized by
many universities throughout the world.
Magnet Schools / Programs (Programs and Schools of Choice): Magnet programs
have curriculum that is aligned to a particular focus area, such as Science Technology
Engineering Mathematics (STEM), performing arts, leadership, or certain career paths.
These programs require an application, and may be selective or use a lottery system.
In Fort Worth ISD these schools and programs are called Programs and Schools of
Choice.
Montessori: Montessori refers to a particular teaching method that focuses on bring-
ing out the natural interests of a child, in contrast to a more uniform teaching method.
Nontraditional Public School: For the purpose of this guide, the nontraditional public
school label includes schools that offer a specialized curriculum or are designed to
meet the needs of a special student population. This includes alternative schools and
programs.
Post-Secondary Education: Post-secondary education refers to various educational
tracks a student can engage in after high school, including two-year colleges, career
and technical trade schools and four-year universities and colleges.
Traditional Public School: For the purpose of this guide, the traditional public school
label includes all district (i.e., non-charter) schools that offer “traditional” coursework
to the general student populations. Traditional public schools include schools that
house magnet programs. These schools are typically “neighborhood schools” that
students are zoned to based on their home addresses.
