TEXPACK Integrated Travel Demand Modeling
Application
Texas Planning Conference June 2016
Presentation Overview
What is it and what is different? Why do this? What does it look like? Where are we now? Where are we going with this?
2
What is TexPACK?
Texas “Package” Suite of Travel Demand Modeling Software –Trip generation and distribution techniques
–Integrated into TransCAD travel demand modeling platform
–Takes advantage of inherent GIS capabilities
3
What is TexPACK?
No longer need to invoke sequential models one step-at-a-time –Although an end-user certainly still has that
option
Automates a number of steps –Application/model familiarity –Hopefully minimizes potential for errors –Reporting and mapping mechanisms
4
What is TexPACK?
Continues with initiative to standardize: –Folder structures –File naming conventions –Attribute/data naming conventions –Model architecture
Common platform for interpreting results statewide
5
Why Implement TexPACK?
1. Increase use of demand model applications by improving application interface,
2. Create a standard platform to create, apply and deploy models throughout the state,
3. Create a common system for measuring and communicating results, and
4. Create a system that permits flexibility for enhancement

Where are we going?
Version 1.1 –Has been or will be delivered
Version 1.2 “ish”
–Laredo 2008-2040 travel models •Generalized cost (account for tolls) •Multi-class assignment –Truck –Auto
•Utilizes bi-conjugate assignment technique •Delivered to MPO

Where are we going?
Version 1.2 “ish” –Lower Rio Grande Valley 2009 Base Year with
2040 pending Forecast Application • Integer 100’th’s trip matrices (previously delivered) –X100 format
•Generalized cost MMA assignment technique –Truck and auto-only toll lane capability
•Bi-conjugate assignment technique •Time-of-day (TOD) models •This functionality has not been delivered to Valley MPOs yet
28
Where are we going?
Version 2.0 (pending) –Envisioned as new approach to modeling in Texas
–Time-of-day models – No longer “daily” models
29
Where are we going?
Version 2.0 (pending) –Generalized-cost MMA
•Truck and Auto trip tables •Capability to address truck and auto-only toll facilities
–Facility types for HOV, HOT, and toll lanes
–Capability to study alternative demographic scenarios for same year
30
Where are we going?
Version 2.0 (pending) –Utilize TxDOT purchased INRIX speed/travel time data
–Iterative feedback resolution •No longer integer trip matrices
–Additional reporting mechanism(s)
31
Where are we going?
Other enhancements under consideration –Generation of person trips rather than direct
generation of auto trips •Auto-occupancy models
–Preservation of trips by income category –Stronger accounting of truck/freight flows –Mode choice
32
Where are we going?
TexPack has been tested in Version 7.0 –Results delivered to TxDOT-TPP
Examining flow-chart options
–So what is this?
