Work Ethic: a belief in the moral benefit and importance of work and its inherent ability to
strengthen character.
Teaching your child good work ethic:
Chores provide your child with the skills they need to perform a task to a certain set of standards and gives them a chance to learn to take pride in their work.
Work for hire gives your child the opportunity to earn money for certain tasks getting them ready for real world job scenarios.
Giving your child an opening to discuss their dream jobs AND the jobs of others gives them motivation to think about opportunities that may become available to them giving them drive to become a successful hardworking adult.
Modeling a good work ethic to your child allows them to see the satisfaction that it has given you. You are the inspiration for your child’s future.
Children who have been taught good work ethic tend to grow up to be happier adults. The character gained from learning to take pride in the work they do allows them to be happier in less than favorable positions. Having this outlook allows them the drive to always do their best giving them a better chance of being acknowledged in a work environment and allowing for advancement opportunities.

Work Ethic Kit Information & TOCThis packet includes an “Age Appropriate Chores Example List” for children 2-18. That being said, the rest of the kit is aimed towards older children (Children who can read and understand directions, though you could read and explain the items to younger children if you think that will work for you.).
Most of the pages have directions for implementation. There are a few that don’t though so I will outline those pages here for you.
“My Chores” page: Simply fill this in with your child’s weekly chores and have them check them off as they complete them each day. Some suggestions to help reduce paper waste: Print the chore chart on cardstock, fill it in, then laminate and use with a dry erase marker OR print on cardstock, fill it in, and cut down to fit inside a document frame with a glass insert. You can use this with dry erase markers as well.
“Work for Hire” header page and instructions: To use this you need to have some dedicated wall space. (A cork board works great for this). Print your chosen header page on cardstock, laminate, cut out, and stick to your space using sticky tack or double sided tape. Use the same method to attach the envelopes to your space once you have put them together.
“Work for Hire Job Slips” page: Fill in the job, the amount, and the to do list for each job you have available. Cut them out and slip them into your envelopes. The job and payment amount should stick up above the envelope, this is so that your child(ren) can see each job and the payment amount prior to choosing.
There are a few poster options, use these to decorate your work for hire space or just hang them up around your home to give your kiddos some motivation.

Work for HireFor parent use. Work for hire can be anything that is not a regular chore. A few examples: Helping a parent with cleaning that they wouldn’t normally (spring cleaning, etc.), doing household and yard maintenance tasks (mowing the lawn, raking leaves, pulling weeds, fixing broken items, changing lightbulbs, etc.) Use the list below to write down some items that could be considered as work for hire jobs and what you think the job is worth in the payment amount. Then use the next few pages to implement your “Work For Hire” program . Use this sheet to keep track of when the jobs are completed by filling in the date columns.
