EARLY THINKING ON LEADERSHIP

• The Idea of Leadership can be traced by to Ancient Egyptian times

• Western world thinking of leadership concentrated on how to acquire and maintain power

• Leadership effectiveness was based on how an individual could hold power

• Ideas shifted to more managerial approaches during the Industrial Revolution

A NEW IDEA OF LEADERSHIP

• A leader is someone that makes an effort for positive change

• Anyone has the potential to become a leader, does not need to be hierarchical

• It is a collective effort grounded in common values as well as a self reflecting

• Leadership is not about getting other to do what he or she wants but rather a transformational process

SOCIAL CHANGE MODELRests Upon the assumptions:

• Leadership is socially responsible, it impacts change on behalf of others.

• Leadership is collaborative

• Leadership is a process, not a position

• Leadership is inclusive and accessible to all people

• Leadership is values-based

• Community involvement/service is a powerful leadership vehicle

SOCIAL CHANGE MODEL VALUES

• Citizenship –Working for change in the community through care, service, social responsibility, and involvement

• Common Purpose –shared responsibility toward collective aims, values, and visions

• Collaboration –capitalizing on the diversity and strengths of relationships and interconnections of individuals

• Controversy with Civility –encouraging open, critical, and civil discourse to come up with new, creative solutions

• Consciousness of Self –an awareness of personal beliefs, values, attitudes, and emotions

• Congruence –the practice of acting consistently with one’s values

• Commitment –intrinsic passion, energy, and purposeful investment toward action

ETHICS AND VALUES

• The Social Leadership Model is heavy based on ethics and morals of the leader and the group

• The primary goal is to create social change, to perform actions that will benefit others

• In order to accomplish change, members need to be self sacrificing at times and consistent with their vision

• Members need to be willing to participate in community based service

• Individuals must be willing to learn and develop as leadership is a dynamic process

EXAMPLE OF SOCIAL CHANGE MODEL

• A Fraternity is a value based organization

• The common purpose is to instill brotherhood within its members

• Outreach toward the community is based on common values and tradition

• Philanthropies are an example of Citizenship

• Hold themselves to a higher standard to better provide social change
