Causes of The War
The fear of loosing control of the federal government to the opposing force.

The election of Lincoln in 1860
The Eastern theatre
• Naval blockade of the South 1861.
• First Battle of bull run July 1861.
• The battle of Antietam September 17 1862.
• Sherman's March to the sea.
The Western Theater
• Control of the Mississippi river was crucial to the Union strategy.
• The CF had a hard time to defending their open areas.
• Robert E. Lee and Johnston surrendered in April 1865.
Results
For the soldiers: 970,000 casualties of which 620,000 soldier
deaths and 350,000 of them were civilians. 8% of all white males aged 13 to 43 died.
Result for the slaves
Slavery officially ended in the U.S. in the spring of 1865.
The former slaves were treated worse than ever before.
They had no other choice than work for their former owner.
Reconstruction
• Began in the war and ended in 1877, after the war had ended.
• 3 new amendments was added to the constitution.
• Many new laws was written and changed during the reconstruction.
