he history of Los Angeles isriddled with historicplaces, some still there, andothers gone — lost in thesands of time. One of those

historic places is the Los AngelesIncline Railway. Better known as“Angels Flight,” this is the shortestrailway in the world.

After 27 long years of storage, thishistoric landmark has recently beenrebuilt and reopened to the delightof my family and I. Those of youwho have never heard of, or rodeon, Angles Flight — let me give yousome background information.

Angeles flight was built in 1901running northwest from the cornerof Third and Hill streets. AngelsFlight consisted of two carriagesnamed Olivet and Sinai. The car-roages were pulled up a steepincline, Bunker Hill, by metalcables powered by engines at thetop of the hill. As one car ascended, the other descended by gravity —with a wave and smile from thepassengers passing by.

This nostalgic railway gave mydad a thrill — he had not riddenAngles Flight in 45 years.

I was hypnotized by the clank, clank, clank of the rail cars, and Iwas somehow transported back toold Los Angels where Angels Flightwas a new attraction and thingswere much different.

I was pleasantly surprised to finda most beautiful garden at the topof Bunker Hill filled with lovelyflowers and fountains amongst

small shops and cafés. There’splenty of places to rest your LAweary feet amongst the beauty ofBunker Hill and Angles Flight.

Those interested in taking part ofone of the most interesting andnostalgic parts of Los Angeles’ his-

tory can visit Angels Flight locatedat 351 South Hill St. in the heart ofdowntown Los Angeles.

It’s only 25 cents to ride thisattraction — quite the excuse for aweekend vacation to see this his-toric landmark!

Nostalgia aboundson heavenly flight!

ay is a busy month for pet events inBakersfield!

First, Self Serve Pet Spa is hosting apet nutrition workshop in Bakersfieldon May 16. The featured speaker is

Sabine Contreras, a self-described Canine Care &Nutrition Consultant and host of The Dog Food Pro-ject.

The workshop will featuretopics including learning toread pet food labels, supple-mentation, feeding for specialneeds pets and a questionand answer session.

I’m fascinated to see howthis workshop works out. Inthe time I’ve been in KernCounty. there have been fewseminars offered specificallyfor pet owners. We’ve had afew folks come through likeBill Bruce, who spoke to theAnimal Control Commissionregarding the success of Cal-gary’s pet overpopulationissues, but for the most part, there aren’t manyopen-to-the-public speaking engagements wherepet owners can get information that’s relevant totheir daily lives.

Should this prove to be a success, it could markthe beginning of a whole host of educational topicsthat can be brought to the pet-owning residents ofKern County.

I’d love to see seminars on everything from petacupuncture to disaster preparedness to rethinkingvaccination schedules — and everything inbetween. This city should be more than largeenough to host events of interest to pet owners. PetNutrition is a great place to start.

Space is limited at the Pet Nutrition workshop, soif you’re interested you need to sign up soon. Headover to Self Serve Pet Spa’s Web site or to their shop, located at 2816 Calloway Dr. for details.

Let’s get this event sold out soon!Next up, for all you cat people, the first ever sym-

posium regarding feral cats in Kern County has beenset. On May 22, cat-friendly groups from around thegreater Bakersfield area will gather at the Kern Agri-cultural Pavilion to discuss ways to deal with feralcats in our area.

Maybe you’re someone who puts out a little foodfor the neighborhood strays. Perhaps you’ve noticedthat neighbors moved some time ago, but their catsare still wandering around the neighborhood. Oryou’ve got a few feline friends hanging around yourworkplace. The symposium is the perfect place tolearn about Trap-Neuter-Release and how it canhelp keep two cats from becoming twenty.

The keynote speaker at the event will be ShellyKotter, coordinator of the Focus on Felines programat nationally-known Best Friends Animals Society.

Registration for the event is taking place now, so ifyou care about the homeless cats of Kern County, make plans to attend this first-ever event.

Call the Bakersfield SPCA at 323-8353, ext. 14 toreserve your seat.

Whether you’re a cat person or a dog-person,there’s an event for you in May.

See you there!Have a pet-related question or comment? E-mail
