Rabbi Ari Dembitzer, Rabbi
The High holidays are upon us. We are about to start a new year, which we hope will be better than the last. The month preceding the high holidays, "Elul," is a time to prepare for the holiness. There are many different ways to prepare. The Rabbis tell us that the name "Elul" is an acronym for "ani ldodi vdodi li," I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me. First we work on bringing ourselves close, and then we will feel the ultimate closeness. We work this month on returning. We must rid ourselves of any blockages to achieve this. Our rabbis tell us that as a prerequisite for achieving closeness with G-d one must first achieve closeness with fellow man. We spend the next few weeks working on making sure we have minimal negativity towards others and attempting to resolves one's negativity towards us. If we are able to achieve this, then G-d will only see the positive in us as well. May the blockages we remove with our fellow man lead to removing the blockages between us and G-d. Blessings for a Shana Tova, filled with happiness and health.
About the Cover:
Rosh Hashanah is a time of newness. New beginnings. New hope. And new chances to pursue our dreams. The f o o d s o f R o s h Hashanah help pave the way by symbolizing all the good things to come.
Rabbi Yaakov Weiss, Mashgiach Ruchani
The Jewish people often have opportunity for looking into the future. We don’t know what will happen in the future but we try our best to predict and prepare for what will happen. Many of our prayers and thoughts on Rosh Hashana look towards the coming year with anticipation. Rosh Hashana is a very special time of year when people come out and identify themselves as practicing Jews. They come to synagogues, social events, or dinners as people that are proud of being Jewish. Perhaps we can take a cue from one of the central prayers of the holiday: Ki Anu Amecha – we are your people and You are our G-d. The prayer goes through different relationships we have with G-d, and I believe its essence is that at different times the Jewish people look to understand their relationship with G-d in varied ways. Let us start off the year as a quest to find out the best way for us to relate to ourselves, each other, and the Master of the world. Shana Tova u-Metukah

The Yamim Noraim, Days of Awe, are more than
just Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. There is an entire
holiday season dedicated to the process of Teshuva.
Selichot (apologies)
The high holidays officially begin the Saturday night
before Rosh Hashanah. Selichot is perhaps the most
spiritual event of the year and sets the tone for the
entire season.
Kever Avot (Kever — graves; Avot – ancestors)
We visit the cemetery before the Yamim Noraim to ask
Hashem that in the merit of the righteous, He grant us
a good year.
See following page for visitation schedule.
Rosh Hashanah (Rosh—beginning;
Hashanah— The year)
The day that commemorates Adam and Eve’s creation.
The beginning of a year is a time to reflect on the year
past and to make resolutions for the year to come.
Tzom Gedaliah (Tzom—fast; Gedaliah—man’s
name)
This day commemorates the tragic events that led to
the end of the last semblance of Jewish sovereignty
after the First Temple’s destruction.
Aseret Yemei Teshuvah (Aseret—10; Yemei—
Days; Teshuva—Repentence)
The ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur are
to be spent asking Hashem and our fellow man for
forgiveness.
Tashlich (to throw)
Around the time of Rosh Hashanah, it is a widely
accepted custom to go to a river and recite a few selected
prayers. The practice has come to be known as Tashlich
because we recite a verse from the book of Micha where
the prophet says, “And cast (Tashlich) into the depths of
the sea all of their sins.”
Yom Kippur (Yom—day; Kippur—atonement)
The day commemorating Hashem’s granting us
atonement for worshipping the golden calf. A spiritual
day when we shun the physical by fasting and immersing
ourselves completely in prayer.
Sukkot (Sukkah—temporary home)
This festival commemorates Hashem’s constant
protection for forty years in the desert. We eat in the
sukkah and pray for rain with the Lulav and Etrog.
Hoshana Rabbah (the great Hoshana)
The day we commemorate the festive circuits observed
when we have a Beit Hamikdash.
Shemini Atzeret (Shemini—eight; Atzeret—
festival)
The Yamim Noraim come to a close with the final day of
Sukkot. During the holiday season, we are closer to
Hashem than at any other point in the year. Shemini
Atzeret is Hashem saying to us, “Before you leave, please,
just spend one more day with me.”
Simchat Torah (simchat—happiness)
This holiday celebrates the completion of the yearly
Torah reading cycle.

Beth Israel is planning an exciting line-up of Scholars-in-Residence in the coming year.
Please mark your calendar now for these special visitors.
October 10 - 11 - Yossi and Pirhiya Apter
The Story of Noam Apter: Heroism, A Natural Extension of Noam’s Life
Yossi and Pirhiya Apter will share personal stories about their son’s dedication to Judaism, to
Israel and its people. In 2002, Noam Apter was one of four students murdered in a terrorist
attack at Yeshivat Otniel. He was working in the kitchen preparing a Shabbat dinner for about
100 students in the dining room next door. Apter said the message he hopes to convey to is that
“the decision to give your life in order to save the lives of your friends, it doesn’t come in a
moment at the end of your life. It’s a way of education.”
November 13-14 - Lewis Groner The Life of a Rabbi’s Son
Lewis Groner is the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Jewish Community
Foundation of Los Angeles. Prior to joining The Foundation, Lew spent 15 years in corporate
marketing and advertising working for J. Walter Thompson, an international ad agency, and
Experian, a credit and information services company. Lewis graduated from the University of
Illinois in Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in political science and Judaic studies. Lewis has a
strong historical connection to Omaha. He is the son of Rabbi Benjamin Groner and Rebbetzin
Frances Groner. Rabbi Groner served as Beth Israel’s rabbi in the mid-50’s and early 6o’s.
Exploring Judaism
Originally designed to provide basic information about Judaism to those considering
conversion, the course has been enhanced to provide a great opportunity for anyone in
the Jewish community to revisit the principles of their faith and the richness of the
practices of Jewish living. The class will be taught by Scott Littky, a seasoned Jewish
educator. The 20 session course begins Monday, October 12, 2015, meeting from 7:00
– 8:30 pm in the Kripke Jewish Federation Library. The class, provided through the
Center for Jewish Life, is free for donors to the Annual Campaign of the Jewish
Federation of Omaha and $180 for all others.
Call (402) 334-6463 or [email protected] for more information and to register.

Mishna L’Neshama Club by Eliad Eliyahu, Community Shaliach
According to the Talmud, the survival of the entire
world rests upon the pure breath of small kids
learning Torah (Tinokot shel Beit Raban). Here, at
Beth Israel you can definitely feel the blessing that
comes from our children who memorize the
Mishnayot as they learn with songs and hand
motions.
Thanks to Naama Weiss and Shilat Ben Shushan for
sharing with us their favorite Mishnah! You are more
than welcome to send more favorite Mishnayot with
a picture to my E-mail- [email protected]
Naama Weiss
My favorite Mishnah is "Eitz Chayim Hee." I like it because I just like the song. That song has lots of different versions and tunes. It makes me think about that every tree goes in a life-cycle and never ever dies. We go around with the Torah in circles and the Torah never dies and grows old.
Shilat Ben Shushan
My favorite Mishnah is
“harcheck Mi Shachen Ra.”
"harchek mishachen ra" means
"Keep away from a bad
neighbor" (Pirke Avot 1:7). I
love this Mishnah because I
love the melody of the
Mishnah, which was the first
song I knew in English – “Bim
Bam, Shabbat Shalom.” I also think it is important to
have only good friends around us, because we learn
from them how to behave.
