Dear Participants,
Welcome back to a new semester at ESU and the TRIO SSS program! It is great
to see all of you, and I hope you are beginning the semester with new energy and
optimism. The new year is a time when people make goals and resolutions. Take
the time to reflect on your last semester at ESU. What did you like? What were
your successes? Who was supportive of you? How did you utilize your time? Did
your time management method work for you? Which classes did you really
enjoy? Think about ways you can have a more positive experience. Would that
include becoming more involved on campus or trying out a new hobby or sport?
A new semester is here, and you have a clean slate.
If you have not completed your Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) for the 2018-2019 year, it is important to complete it as soon as
possible. If you need assistance, SSS is here to help. Contact the office
(620-341-5097) and make an appointment with Julie, Eden or me. We would be
happy to assist you.
We are renewing a tradition of the TRIO programs this year. We will be hosting
our TRIO Day Luncheon on Friday, February 23rd, and all SSS participants are
invited as our guests. It will be held in the Memorial Union Ballroom from 11:30
am-1:00 pm with the program beginning at 12:15 pm. This is our way of
celebrating all of you and your many successes. I hope you can attend.
I look forward to seeing you throughout the semester. Have a great one!!!
Warmly,
Kristi Bolen, Director

My major is Psychology, and I’m the father of Kristopher Barber. After I get my degrees from Emporia, I plan to help children and give them an opportunity to have a future. I’m originally from Topeka, and I’m a sprinter and jumper for ESU Track & Field.
Hi, my name is Gerald Ottenwalder, however, I prefer to be
called “Jerry.” I am in my second semester as a freshman. My
major is in Rehabilitation Education/Counseling Services with
a minor in Psychology with the intention to attend graduate
school for a Master’s degree. My goal is to work in the field of
addictions. I have a passion to give back to humanity and help
others. The people here at TRIO are very supportive. I know at anytime I can call or
stop in the office and any one of the great people there will guide or counsel me on
whatever needs I may have. The tutoring program has helped me tremendously. It
has been a number of years since I have been in an academic learning environment. I
would suffer greatly from test anxiety. My tutor (Amanda) was awesome. She was
always there to ground me and help me work on the areas where I had questions or
doubt. I hold a great deal of respect and gratitude for her and those in the tutoring
program who take the time out of their day to show me I can succeed. Thank you.
Ottenwalder

Fired Up For Learning!
I’m the new GA for TRIO’s SSS program! This is my second semester at Emporia State, and I can’t be more
excited to be here! What gets me fired up for learning is knowing that I am that much closer to my goal of being a High School Guidance Counselor! I know that I am learning skills and obtaining knowledge that will help me in my journey. My mother always said, ‘Life is a
game and you need to play by the rules presented, even if you don’t like them.” So even when I’m learning
about something that doesn’t interest me, I’m getting better at the game and that will help me grow into a suc-
cessful person!

I’m most excited about learning new
concepts. There is so much knowledge
out there, and Emporia State gives me
