Dear parishioners,

Trying to keep up with the pace-of-change as it relates to suggestions, guidelines, recommendations and mandates seems like a full-time job. And I'm not just talking about church matters. It's that, but it's also about the world of the coronavirus in which we live. The daily news, reported hourly and even by the minute, is much about COVID-19. The reaction? The suggestions, guidelines, recommendations and mandates provoke both agreement and disagreement as to how best to proceed. However, there is one issue that has everyone speaking with one voice. We need a vaccine and we need it now. Pray for the scientists. The cure will surely be found in one of their laboratories.

The drama of change has surely impacted the Church and the practice of our faith. While our worship of God is the same in the Mass, somehow it feels different. Pews taped off in our churches, hand- sanitizers at the door (and not holy water), wearing masks for protection, and the distribution of Holy Communion at the end of Mass. How odd it all feels!

The little children anxious to receive their First Holy Communion and the young people looking forward to their Confirmation have also felt the impact of the coronavirus. Their Spring dates were cancelled and have now been re-scheduled in a whole different way.

The 80 children for First Communion have been divided into four separate groups with different times and churches. Each child will be limited to just six guests who may attend, keeping the maximum number of people in church at 140.

Saturday September 26, 2020

10:00 am Saint Joseph Church 1:00 pm Saint Scholastica Church

Sunday September 27, 2020

1:00 pm Saint Joseph Church 3:00 pm Saint Scholastica Church

The Sacrament of Confirmation will also be divided into four different groups to accommodate the 80 candidates to be confirmed. However, the biggest change is that Bishop David A. Zubik has delegated the pastors of each parish to celebrate the sacrament. I quote from a communication that I recently received from the Office of the Bishop:

“Whereas, the need to avoid large gatherings of the faithful due to the coronavirus pandemic in order

to safeguard the health and safety of the population has made it nearly impossible for the diocesan and auxiliary bishops to visit each parish for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation according to the norm in law in ordinary circumstances.

I hereby decree that all priests in the Diocese of Pittsburgh who hold the office of pastor or parish administrator . . . are hereby granted the faculty to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation, in accord with canons 882 and 884 of the Code of Canon Law.”

Therefore, as duly delegated by Bishop Zubik, I will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for the young people of the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes who were to have been confirmed on May 14, 2020 by Bishop William Winter. The new dates are these:

Monday—September 21, 2020 7:00 pm in Saint Joseph Church

Tuesday—September 22, 2020 7:00 pm in Saint Scholastica Church

Wednesday—September 23, 2020 7:00 pm in Saint Scholastica Church

Thursday—September 24, 2020 7:00 pm in Saint Joseph Church

In addition to each candidate and their sponsor, five additional guests may be in attendance. That will bring the maximum number of people in church to 140.

My dear sisters and brothers, it feels as though our heads are spinning with the rapidity of changes that are both welcome and unwelcome, and we are left with little choice but to go along with things. Please God, give us the patience and the openness and the desire to live out the plan that unfolds in our lives on a daily basis. And know for certain: We are in this together!

P.S.

Next week's bulletin letter will give a preview of what the Faith Formation program (i.e., CCD) for our young people and their families is going to look like as we move forward.

Dear high school students,

The past few months have been full of changes and unpredictability. The Coronavirus pandemic has caused many special events and celebrations to be canceled or altered to fit the new normal. Additionally, this fall, your high school experiences will be different than those in previous years. The change and uncertainty may cause a great deal of stress and/or anxiety.

As a past Fox Chapel student, I know that high school can be stressful and anxiety provoking even outside of a pandemic setting. Now, as a physician assistant student at Gannon University, I know how important it is to know how to approach stress and anxiety in a healthy way.

Therefore, I am inviting you to attend a virtual presentation on Friday, August 21st at 5:00pm to learn healthy coping mechanisms. If you are interested, please contact me, Bethany Pollock, at [email protected] to get more information and to RSVP by August 14th.

This presentation is intended for high school students, however, college students are also welcome.

Sincerely, Bethany Pollock, PA-S

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

The Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only-begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

First Reading: Isaiah 55:1-3

Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.

Second Reading: Romans 8:35, 37-39

Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.

When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass.

Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.
