A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
The new bulletin format is receiving positive reviews. While certainly more substantial than what we were previously accustomed to with individual parish bulletins, hopefully we are becoming familiar with the layout. Debbie VanDemark is doing a wonderful job in preparing each week's bulletin. All information from each of our four parishes should be sent to her. You may submit items for bulletin publication no later than Monday at Noon to: [email protected].
For me, the most striking feature of our new bulletin is the LOGO. It is intended to be the "signature" of who we are as four parishes centered around the Eucharist. Lest anyone forget: we are One Body in Christ. It is the altar of the Lord around which we gather in Saint Francis of Assisi Church, Saint Edward Church, Saint Scholastica Church, Madonna of Jerusalem Church, Saint Mary Church and Saint Joseph Church that unites us.
One of the prominent features worth noting in our weekly bulletin is found on page 8 under the title heading of: GIVE . . . SERVE . . . LlVE. It points to the outreach of our parishes in response to the needs of the poor. It serves to connect us to the Gospel mandate in caring for the hungry and the homeless, those who are broken in spirit. I urge a careful and weekly reading that will provide you with suggestions and requests on how you can be of service to others. Of particular note is the 2019 Shoe Box Santa Project. A timely and worthwhile way of helping.
Parishioners show their generosity in so many ways. Yes, in the regular weekly collection and even when the basket is passed a second time . . . in the anonymous gifts that are targeted for people and families with particular needs . . . in the faithful service to the shut-in when carrying the Holy Eucharist to them . . . in the whole-hearted response to the opportunity to purchase new vestments.
While the Gospel calls us to serve the poor, it also provides multiple instances of Jesus healing the sick who suffered in body, mind and spirit. The Church celebrates that healing in the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Read in the next column about the communal celebration of the sacrament that will be held on Sunday afternoon, November
at pm in Saint Edward Church in Blawnox.

Did You Know . . . ?
. . . The year initiated having just one Mass in our parish grouping on each of the civil holidays that our nation marks. The Memorial Day Mass was offered in Saint Joseph Church; our July 4TH; Mass celebrating Independence Day was in Madonna of Jerusalem Church; we gathered in Saint Edward Church on Labor Day; and on Thursday morning, November we will celebrate our Thanksgiving Day Mass at in Saint Scholastica Church. Is there any reason why the church should not be full as parishioners from four parishes gather to give thanks to God for our many blessings?!?
Communal Anointing of the Sick:
Saint James writes: "Are there people sick among you? Let them send for the priests of the Church, and let the priests pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick persons, and the Lord will raise them up. If they have committed any sins, their sins will be forgiven them" (James 5: 14-15).
The Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Once called Extreme Unction and referred to as the Last Rites, the sacrament is much more readily available. We no longer wait until imminent death before administering the sacrament. It is intended as a healing sacrament of the Church whereby a person is strengthened in their current sickness or helped in their final illness.
The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated on Sunday, November at pm in Saint Edward Church in Blawnox. It will be offered within the context of the Sunday Mass and those wishing to be anointed from all the churches of our parish grouping are welcome. Fr. Dale DeNinno, Fr. Mike Decewicz and Fr. Bill Siple will be present to anoint with the holy oil of the church those who gather.
If you suffer with a chronic illness, if you have been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, if you are facing serious surgery, if you count yourself among the frail elderly - you are encouraged to come in order to receive the grace of this sacrament of our faith.

The LAV Appalachia mission team will be selling pies from Oakmont Bakery to raise funds for their 2020 trip to West Virginia. Order forms are available at church entrances and on the LAV website at LAVCatholic.org/news. Orders are due November 17 and pies will be available for pick up in the Saint Scholastica Parish Hall November 23 & 24.
Congratulations to two adults in our parishes who recently received the sacrament of Confirmation. Brendan Battistel was confirmed by Bishop Waltersheid at St. Catherine of Sweden Parish on October 19. Ashley Lucas received the sacrament last Sunday at SS. John and Paul Parish from Bp. Zubik. Our faith formation staff thanks the members of our RCIA team and the participants in our RCIA process, who worked with Ashley and Brendan to prepare them. We encourage adult Catholics who have not been confirmed to contact Delia Barr or Andy Bechman. Anyone who is interested in exploring the possibility of becoming a Catholic Christian is encouraged to contact them as well.
Breakfast with Santa: Mark your calendars for Saint Joseph’s annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 14. This year’s theme is CandyLand! There will be two seatings – 9:00am and 12:00 noon. Tickets $7.00 adult or child. Enjoy a delicious breakfast, music, crafts, games, raffles and of course, a visit with Santa! Tickets go on sale Friday, November 15, and are available in the Saint Joseph offices.
A workshop on the Mass led by Thomas Octave, Director of Music Ministry at Saint Joseph Parish, will be held on Sunday, November 10, from 1:30pm-3:00pm in Saint Scholastica Church. Participants are invited to learn more about the elements of the Mass, the roles of the ministers of the Mass, and the excitement and joy of celebrating together the source and summit of our faith! All liturgical ministers and all who are eager to learn more about the Mass are invited.
The “Catholicism” Series concludes for the fall this week at its regular time
this Wednesday morning from 10:30am to 12:00 Noon in the Saint Scholastica
Parish Hall, and this Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9:00pm in the Saint Joseph
Parish St. John Paul II Hall. The topic for both sessions is: "A Body Both Suffering and Glorious: The Mystical
Union of Christ and the Church.” Each episode stands alone, so you can join us
at any time! It is not necessary to register and there is no fee.
Join the Saint Scholastica choir for Christmas! The adult choir rehearses on Wednesdays from 7-9pm and sings at the 9:30am liturgy throughout Advent and the 10pm Christmas Eve liturgy. The Youth Choir for students in 5th through 12th grade will rehearse on Saturday, December 21, from 2:30-4pm and sing at the 4pm Christmas Eve liturgy. Contact Sr. Pat to register by November 15.
The Christian Mothers and Rosary Society will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, November 21, at 7:00pm in the John Paul I Center. New members are always welcome.
A Bereavement Series will be offered in the Saint Scholastica Parish Hall from 1-3pm on Wednesdays. Session 5 on Wednesday, November 13, is Help for the Grieving Process after Someone You Love has Died. Please register by noon on November 12 at 412-781-0186 or [email protected].
Used Christmas Cards: The LAV parishes are collecting old Christmas cards to use as tags on this year’s Advent Giving Trees. If you have any to donate, please bring them to one of the parish offices as soon as possible.
Growing in the Spirit is a group of adults supporting each other and sharing practices and resources for spiritual growth. We meet monthly. The next session is this Tuesday, November 12, at 7:30pm in the St. Scholastica Ministry Center Library. There is no need to register for this group—just join us!
The Saint Monica Society of Saint Scholastica Parish was formed to pray for and reach out to families and parishioners who no longer worship with us. The Society also sends cards to homebound parishioners, those in nursing homes, and long-time parishioners who have moved away. All are welcome to join in their regular meeting at 10:00am on the first Saturday of the month in the Saint Scholastica Parish Hall.
The Saint Scholastica Liturgy of the Word for Children at the 9:30am Mass will not be held on November 10 due to the blood drive in the Parish Hall.

Fall Food pantry collection: The Western Pennsylvania Alumni Association of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity invites you to help end hunger in your neighborhood. Members are collecting donations of nonperishable items to support the Saint Vincent de Paul food pantry. All donations are appreciated, but as Thanksgiving approaches, we are particularly on the lookout for boxed stuffing, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce and gravy. Monetary donations for the food pantry are also accepted. Goods can be dropped off in each of the LAV churches and the John Paul I Center in Sharpsburg. Thank you for your generosity!
Vagabond Missions is collecting gift cards and non-perishable snack foods for teens through December. Popular items are: variety packs of chips, dollar candy (Sour Patch Kids, Reese’s, Gummy Bears, Chewy chocolate chips, etc.), McDonald’s gift cards, or any other fast food, portable speakers, and ear buds. Bring them to any of the parish offices during normal work hours.
You can also still sign up to provide a meal for the Tuesday youth outreach night. We ask you to arrive around 5:30pm at the Juan Diego Parish John Paul I Pastoral Center to set up food for about 30 people. Drinks, plates, napkins and plastic ware will be provided. The Annual homemade Christmas Cookie Collection for the St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry in Sharpsburg is sponsored by the Saint Scholastica Aquinas Guild. Feel free to bake now and freeze the goodies, or plan for some extra baking time in early December. We are hoping to supply 150 families with a nice assortment. A.R.M. is establishing a Hope Fund in conjunction with Gateway Rehabilitation. The
funds will be used to help those who have completed their program with needs such as bus passes, a clothing allotment, deposits for
utilities, restoration of cell phone service and first month’s rent. Your continued support of this
ministry is greatly appreciated.
CALIX is an association of Catholic alcoholics who are maintaining their sobriety through affiliation with the Fellowship of
Alcoholics Anonymous. Our first concern is to interest Catholics with an alcoholic problem in
the virtue of total abstinence. Our second is to promote the spiritual development of our
