Welcome to February! Where the heck did January go -
is it me or did January just fly by? As we start this
month, a few things need to be addressed. Hopefully
some of you can help me with these issues.
First, we really need someone - or a couple of you - to
chair Arts & Crafts. It would be very unfortunate for us
not to have an Arts & Crafts Committee. This group has
been our most active committee and does a lot of won-
derful, ongoing projects. It would really be a loss to the
community if we couldn’t continue these projects.
PLEASE if you can help, let me know.
Next, at January’s general meeting there were forms to
fill out where you were given the opportunity to suggest
a project for A Day of Giving, a GFWC project in honor
of Martin Luther King Day. However, only 2 members
completed the forms. Come on ladies! I’m sure some of
you know of a person in this community who might
need (for example) a small project done around the
house, or help in some other way. As GFWC members
we try to “live the volunteer spirit.” Though we’re obvi-
ously not going to do the project on MLK Day, it’s still
important to do. The forms will again be on the tables
this month, so please give it some thought and fill one
out.

Humans Have a Plastic Problem
Submitted by Patsie Ginley, Conservation Chairperson
This is the third in a series of strategies to get plastic out of your life.
Soda bottles, sandwich bags, straws—they fill the world’s pantries, oceans
and landfills. And unlike organic material, they don’t decompose. There are
more than 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste out there, endangering wildlife,
waterways, and our own health. And, no, recycling is not the only solution –
just 14% of plastic is collected for reuse.
Strategy #6. Refill office supplies. Refill toner cartridges and pens in-
stead of buying new ones.
Strategy #7. Go plastic-free for parties. Instead of disposable table-
ware, use your own dishes and wash them or buy compostable ones. Use
cloth or recycled paper napkins.
Strategy #8. Look for solid or powdered cleaning and personal care products. Look for a store that
carries bar soap, solid shampoo bars, powdered dishwasher soap and laundry soap, soap nuts, and deodor-
ant in plastic-free packaging. Avoid using plastic razors or buying lotions and lip balms that come in plastic
containers. Use a wood-handled hairbrush.

MOW Co-Chair
We are happy to announce the total number of meals that were delivered in 2019 was 7,874. The money we collected in November and De-cember totaled $190.00, which we donated to Samaritan Services in memory of Doris Ragland who started Samaritan Services many years ago. Conservation Committee Collections
The Conservation Committee collects recycla-
bles at every monthly meeting. Our newest col-
lection has been for Soles4Souls. We have col-
lected over 280 pairs of shoes so far. We are
looking for new and gently worn shoes (please
secure with string or heavy rubber band). Men’s
and children’s shoes are needed, too. In addi-
tion, the following items are always appreciated:
greeting card fronts, buttons (the larger the bet-
ter—for crafts), Box Tops for Education, can
tabs, elementary-age appropriate new or gently
used books for the Little Free Library in Wimau-
ma, and coupons, but please note we are now
collecting ONLY FOOD coupons.
Currently, we are no longer collecting maga-
zines, corks, or stamps. In addition, plastic bags
can be recycled at most grocery stores, and
Publix has a container for Styrofoam.
