A showcase of proactive approaches to classroom management and active learning in the classroom
The Classroom is Happening at Stony Brook
Proactive Classroom Management = Active Learning
WE ARE STONY BROOK
•Promote an across-the-disciplines sense of community through the documentation, promotion and peer-to-peer sharing of active learning approaches in the Stony Brook classrooms.
•Academic Voyeurism (David Ametrano) – Allows the faculty to take a peak inside each others classrooms to spark an interchange of active learning activities and creative teaching methods.

Mendelian Genetics ProjectBiology 150
Students were divided up in pairs. They were given envelopes with chromosomes, genes and alleles. One student in the team got a tiger ‘s envelope and the other got a lion’s.
They were told to mate and put together the genetics of a liger.
Over 300 students in the large lecture hall paired off and were actively engaged in the activity.
The active learning exercise was conducted by a T.A. working on his Ph.D. in biology….Mark Jonas. http://www.flickr.com/photos/nancywozniak/

The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet
First year faculty, Ayesha Ramachandraw, was assigned an Introduction to Theater, DEC course. Her students let her know that they mostly premed students and this course wasn’t important to them. The students weren’t reading assigned materials or turning in other assignments. After we discussed her problem, she gave them a choice…written final exam or produce a play. They chose to produce a play. Ayesha stepped back and made them assume all the responsibilities and roles. Opening night, the energy was electrifying. Their parents and friends came to see their production.
Afterwards they shared with me how much they have come to appreciate the theater. Many wanted to continue an active interest in theater production.
