The Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost
September 17-19, 2016
Equipping and Sending God’s People to
Make a Christ-Like Difference in the World!
As We Gather—“My conscience is clear, but that does not make
me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me” (2 Corinthians 4:4) As St. Paul wrote these words he was teaching us that even though we may not be aware of any wrongdoing, we may still be guilty in the sight of God. The conscience can confuse us. Even unbelievers “show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them” (Romans 2:15). So, how much more do we as Christians, who live by grace through faith, want to adhere to God’s Word and the dictates of our conscienc-es? Today we will dive deeper into this life-changing topic.

Welcome to Holy Cross.
Thank you for choosing to worship with us today! We pray that you will encounter Christ, the Living Word, and in a new way experience His mercy and grace today. Holy Cross is a place that can change lives through the power of the cross. Worship allows you to sing and pray in the language of your heart as God’s truth is expressed, His gifts are received, and lives are transformed. Mission outreach opportunities both at home and around the world abound through actual presence or prayer and/or financial sup-port. A growing commitment and practice of equipping the home to be God’s powerful tool for forming and transmitting faith along with our Christian day school of recog-nized excellence committed to inculcating a Christian worldview help us, with your participation, to make a Christ-like difference in the world.
We are a congregation and people on a journey— thankful for what God has done in and through us, excited as we respond to Him in worship and in our daily lives this next week. Whether it is for a lifetime or a short season, we welcome you to join us on this journey.
Lord God, You have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out in good cour-age, not knowing where we go, but only that Your hand is leading us and Your love is supporting us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
If you are a guest or visitor, please fill out the white Guest Card in the pocket of the friendship pads, which will be passed during the service.
Nursery (0-4 years old) is located next to the Welcome Center, in the newly created preschool classroom.

Scriptures 1 Kings 19:1–13
Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets
with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods
do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this
time tomorrow.” Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to
Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a
day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And
he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for
I am no better than my fathers.” And he lay down and slept under a broom tree.
And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” And he looked,
and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water.
And he ate and drank and lay down again. And the angel of the Lord came again a
second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great
for you.” And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food for-
ty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God. There he came to a cave and
lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him,
“What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord,
the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown
down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am
left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And he said, “Go out and stand on the
mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong
wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the
Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not
in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.
And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped
his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold,
there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

1 Timothy 1:18–20
This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies
previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding
faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their
faith, among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to
Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
Mark 9:42–50
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be bet-
ter for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into
the sea. And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life
crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your
foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two
feet to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better
for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown
into hell, ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ For every-
one will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will
you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
