2 B4RN Broadband for Hornby & Farleton & Claughton
B4RN for Hornby and Farleton
B4RN for Hornby and Farleton is a community project that is working to bring the
hyperfast B4RN broadband service to Hornby and Farleton. The team is continuing to
finalise details of the core routes around Hornby. Earlier in January some volunteers
helped to deliver duct for the houses on the top estate and for the route North to link
up to Melling. Digging started at the Melling end before Christmas, and we will get
started on the top estate as soon as the ground is dry enough.
The core route has been agreed in principle from Wray to Farleton, and on to
Claughton. The team is continuing to work on the details of the rollout in Farleton
itself.
If you wish to receive regular updates about the roll-out in Hornby and Farleton, please
sign up for our newsletter here: http://tinyletter.com/B4RN-Hornby
If you are interested in a B4RN broadband connection, are thinking of investing, wish to
get involved or would like any other information about the project, please
email: [email protected]
B4RN for Claughton
The cabinet for Claughton is due to be delivered before the end of the month and a pre
-existing site for it has been agreed with the landowner. Maps for the actual route of
the ducting with positioning of chambers have been prepared and are being
distributed to those involved in the installation. A crossing of the A683 near to the
cabinet will be necessary and the best method of achieving this is under
consideration. The wet weather has held up mole ploughing to the east of the
village. The complete route is planned to run from just west of Stock Bridge, near
Farleton Crossing to Hole House Farm on the road to Caton Green.
More information on the Claughton scheme is available
from: [email protected]
Missing Equipment Appeal
Hi to all customers old and new, and welcome to the first ones in Caton.
Amongst you are the stalwart volunteers who have built the network.
Amongst those volunteers are two forgetful people who are no doubt very busy and
have a lot to remember.
Unfortunately, Person 1, Brian the farmer, has forgotten who he lent his cat scanner to
last summer. All he can remember is that it was someone he knew and trusted, and
they called round in their white van. (He lives in Wennington)
Person 2 is the man in the van. If you are that person who has forgotten to return the
3
cat scanner, or have passed it on to another volunteer, or forgotten you still have it in
the van, please get in touch. This is not the B4RN cat scanner, we know where that is. It
is Brian's own scanner and he needs it back. If person 2 is not a customer but you know
who he may be, please ask around and let's find the scanner. We have already tried
locally and in newsletters, and on facebook, so we're using this mailing list is a last re-
sort. Either hit 'reply' or email [email protected] if you can help. If you have used other
diggers on your patch and have their contact details please forward this message to
them in case they borrowed it. It is so easy to forget.
If you are one of the volunteers in a completed area and have any joiners, cutters, end
caps or any other surplus bits of kit in your sheds/pockets/cars, please give them to
your local champions who will pass them back to us. Forgetfulness is not exclusive. ;)
Very many thanks!

TO ALL DOG OWNERS
Please could we ask you to pick up dog poo as we are
finding it difficult to walk around it when we walk to and
from school. Sometimes we have to walk on the road to
avoid stepping in dog poo and this is very dangerous for
us. Please take a bag with you, then you can put it in the bin or take it
home with you.
Thanking you

Village Carol Singing for Christmas 2014
Another Christmas with our traditional Carol Singing in aid of the Lancaster Christmas
Night Shelter. LDHAS has written us a warm letter of thanks. We raised a magnificent
£548 in the three nights. Thank you to all who braved the weather and thanks to all
who generously rewarded our efforts. The first night was very still and cold, and
nights two and three windy and wet. We had the delight of children with us, and this
makes the event as they scamper around with collecting tins. In the last 12 years we
have raised £5734. Happy New Year and see you next Christmas. Chris Collins

8 Rotary Club of Lunesdale
During the year of office when Kevin Walsh was District Governor
for our area Rotary Clubs raised large amounts of money to pur-
chase much needed defibrillators. The money raised was increased
to over £65,000 by a Rotary Foundation grant. The Lunesdale Club
was happy to contribute to this initiative. Past Presiident Gordon Downing-Stewart,
was instrumental in obtaining an ultra light, hard case compact defibrillator, de-
signed for backpacks used by mountain rescue services, for the Yorkshire Cave Or-
ganisation. It was officially presented by Kevin to the CRO towards the end of 2014.
The Children In Need collection on 14th November at the Booths store Kirkby Lons-
dale, as always, was so generously supported. The day was very cold and wet but The
Rotary Club collected £970 and Booths Staff collected £790. The joint effort raised an
amazing £1,760 which breaks previous records. The Booths Group presented a
cheque for £24,000 to Children in Need.
The Club's Christmas party was held on 4th December at the Castle Inn Hornby. It
was very well attended by club members and their partners plus friends and col-
leagues. President Peter Irving made a short speech of welcome and said how much
he has enjoyed his first 6 months as President and thanked everyone for their sup-
port. He went on to say that we have a very busy year ahead to look forward to in-
cluding a 40th anniversary.
Rotary Club provided the vehicle and sleigh in early December to transport Father
Christmas through Main St, Kirkby Lonsdale lighting up the Christmas trees as he
passed by to his grotto in Market Square. As always the Rotary Sleigh transporting
Father Christmas visited many villages throughout the valley as Christmas ap-
proached. All the money collected on these traditional visits is donated to deserving
local causes.
A big thank you to all those who have made a donation to any of the Club's collec-
tions. It all helps the charities in need which Rotary supports locally, regionally, na-
tionally and globally.
The Club meets most Thursday evenings at The Castle Inn Hornby. If you would like
to know more about the Club please call 015242 73073.

event)
Spring 1919: the War is over, and it’s an important day for
the village, a day of celebration - a bright, hopeful day. But for Annie and
Elizabeth this is also the day when a woman arrives in the village who will
change their lives forever.
Who is she? What has she to do with them? And who is the man that connects
them all?
Based on the extra-ordinary, true story of a woman’s amazing journey into the
heart of a man’s War, Dorothy’s War is told through songs of the period
ranging from much-loved favourites to forgotten gems all sung live in
close-harmony.
Based on an extra-ordinary and little-known true story of Dorothy Lawrence,
about her daring and courage in the Great War. You will be gripped; you will
love the songs; you will sing along; you will laugh; above all, you will be
moved.

Hornby Flower Club
On the 11th December Members of the Hornby Flower Club
met together for the Christmas Workshop which was very
ably facilitated by Liz and Jill from the Flower
Bank. Everyone made and decorated a Christmas wreath
which could be used as a traditional door hanging or as a
table centre piece. We also enjoyed some festive cheer with
a glass of mulled wine and of course mince pies.
On 15th January 2015 our speaker was Paul Cocker from Lancashire Parks.
who explained how the Parks Department plan, design and plant up the open
spaces in our parks and elsewhere. There was also a display of photographs
showing the designs submitted at the RHS Show at Tatton Park.
The next meeting of Hornby Flower Club is on
Thursday, 19th February in Hornby Village Institute at 7.30 pm.
Our title is 'Say it with Flowers!'
An open evening where members are invited to demonstrate an arrangement
of their own choice and talk about the reasons behind their selection of flow-

Lancaster Beekeepers
are working with local communities, Lancashire
County & City Councils, local parks and business-
es to create pollinator patches using native flower
and grass seed. This aims to improve the native
forage available to honey bees and other pollina-
tors to help to reverse their decline. Using native
seed mixes gives a long season of flower interest.
Managing the ‘pollinator patches’, once established, also reduces the number
of times grass areas need to be cut so saving council costs.
In discussion with Hornby Parish Council, it is proposed to start a ‘pollinator
patch’ in Hornby on the road side verge by the Strands Farm housing. This
would give a bright welcome to people coming into the village for most of the
year. Lancaster Beekeepers are able to advise on what seed to use, possible
funding sources, best ways to prepare the site and how to manage the site
whilst it gets established.
The ‘pollinator patch’ belongs to the village and will need a number of volun-
teers to take on this project. For example in Caton’s last year, the local scout
group got involved as well as a number of local people. Enthusiasm and a bit
of time is all that’s needed and such a good way to get fit and have fun whilst
developing a patch of colour and resource for our pollinators. It is hoped to
start the project this spring.
If you think you might like to get involved do get in touch with any of the
Parish Councillors or Alayne Robin ([email protected]).

18 Hornby-with-Farleton Parish Council – December 2014 Meeting
Erica Sarney and Alayne Robin attended the meeting to discuss the two proposed sites for pollinator patches. These sites are the triangle of grass at the junction of Gressingham Road and Melling Road and also the grass verge outside the entrance to Strands Court. It was felt that the second of these sites would be the more suitable option. Erica and Alayne are requesting a group of volunteers to help them develop this further. Three separate planning applications were discussed with the most controversial being the demolition of the old hairdressers on Station Road and a dwelling erected in its place. Several concerns were raised with the main one being the fact that this site can never be safe for vehicular access. For this reason, the Councillors voted against this application. A request has been received for the Parish Council to help fund HVT on a permanent monthly basis going forward in the hope that it will save the Institute from imminent closure. The Clerk will investigate the viability of this request through LALC.
Hornby-with-Farleton Parish Council – January 2015 Meeting The precept for the forthcoming financial year was discussed, and it was agreed that this would be raised by 1.9%. HVT have requested a grant of £5,000 per annum to assist them with the running of the Institute, in the hope that this could help save it from closure. The Clerk agreed to look into what percentage of the precept we are allowed to donate in the form of grants. She was also asked to request an extra streetlight outside the Catholic Church as it was felt that the pavement in this area was particularly dark. More detailed minutes will be available in the folder in the Institute, once approved at the next meeting. The next Parish Council meeting will take place on Thursday, 12th February at 7:45pm in Hornby Institute. Anyone who wishes to attend would be most welcome. An agenda will be displayed in each of the Parish notice boards on Sunday 8th February 2015. Tizzie Massey (Clerk)
Hornby Village Trust Funding
The H.V.T. Committee have asked Hornby Parish Council for help with
funding the Institute and the services that it provides. We are asking for ap-
prox. £5000 each year (applied for annually) and this equates to approx. 29.5
pence per average household per week. Your Parish Council needs to know
that you are in favour of this.
Please come to a public meeting in the Institute on Wed. Feb. 11th at
7.30pm to learn more and BE COUNTED. Without this funding the Institute
is in serious danger of closing.

F S: H!"#$ C%&' Welcome all Hornby Contact readers to the Hornby Campus extract for
February 2015. We are once again excited to share our fun experiences we
have had over the last 2 months. We hope you enjoyed our singing at the
ins, tute and the Wenning Company Sale in December – Thank you for
your much appreciated support!
December was very busy with 1st-5th a ,ring exam week, 8th an awards assembly
on the 8th in which our previous year 13 students came in to collect their awards,
11th was the Wenning Company Sale, 12th we sung at the ins, tute. The last two
days of term were filled out with fun – 18th we had the poetry by heart compe,,on
and also an enrichment show which gave students a chance to show what they had
been doing over the last term and on the 19th we had the year 10 smoothie compe-
,,on and school song compe,,on. We then broke up at 12pm for a well-earned 2
week break.
We came back to school on Monday 5th
January, straight back into learning, here are
a few things that we have been doing: Mrs Hartley has begun to teach La,n to some
pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 and they have made an excellent start. Year 5 and 6 Pupils
have been wri,ng a recount about their winter holidays and using their own success
criteria. In Maths they have been calcula,ng percentages and in Humani,es their
new topic is the Indus valley civilisa,on. Year 3 and 4 Pupils have been working on
problems using Roman Numerals and their new topic is Ancient Greece. Students in
Year 11 and 12 will be choosing their AS and A2 options over the next few
weeks. Parent consultation day is the 29th, students are not in school on the 30th
then we pass over to February which has many exciting things in store for you
20 Days for Girls – Uganda A further sewing session took place in Hornby Institute in early December and
though many were busy with Christmas, the usual stalwarts were there to help. De-
spite this session and the fact that a small collection of amazing people were like us
beavering away at home in the lead up to Christmas (and probably like us putting a
rather large strain on marital harmony!), we still had a substantial deficit of pads for
our kits, when we finally packed up three days before Christmas! However, an SOS
sent out via Guiding and village networks led to a hive of activity in Claughton Vil-
lage Hall on the 30th of December. It was brilliant; we had ironers, cutter-outers,
sewers, trimmers and waste collectors – from at least 7 different age decades and by
the end of the day our target was in site.
We have produced over 100 draw string bags, 200 shields and 800 pads. We have
collected enough soap, flannels and knickers to not only assemble the 100 kits we
wanted to take to Uganda but also to supply other members of the community in the
areas being visited and to have a stock ready to use as we set up a regular ‘Days for
Girls’ sewing group.
It was fantastic to gather at the house of Juliet Burd (one of the Uganda group lead-
ers), on the 3rd of January to assemble each kit in its unique bag. They looked so
pretty and several of the people packing were actually going to be there in Uganda to
distribute them.
The following day the kits were packed into everyone’s spare suitcases along with the
medicines, mosquito nets and other important items.
This has been a brilliant example of community involvement, embracing a wide net-
work of people of all ages from personal friends and family to neighbours, to church
members, to people from our village and several other Lune Valley villages Guiding
folk from across North Lancashire, a WI group from Preston and staff at St.John’s
Hospice where I work.
We waved Alice off on a coach from Kirkby Lonsdale at 04am on Saturday morning
and the group arrived safely in Uganda late that night. They started their clinics their
today, the 12th of January.
I am sure there will be lots of photos to show on their return and I hope you will
come and hear all about the distribution of the kits and the wider work of the group a
little later in the year.
In the meantime we want to say a huge ‘Thank you’ to each and every person who
helped and to HVT and Claughton Village Hall for supporting us.
and oh........ I did have a dining table on Christmas Day – just!
Please Note - There will be a meeting to discuss the setting up of a regular Days For
Girls Sewing Group & Network at my house on Tuesday, the 17th of February at
2:30pm. Please telephone 21047 to register interest.
