This past October the CCCAM organization, made up of close to 500 members, met together for its annual Summit, gearing up for the 2018- 2019 competitive cheer season. This year’s Summit highlighted keynote speaker Allison Tinsley, University of Michigan’s cheer coach and founder of World Cheer Ex-change. Also hosted were guest speakers in tumbling, stunting, and other core ingre-dients to competitive cheer. Coming up this December, the organization will be host-ing a Scholarship Invitational at 10 different sites across the state. Hosting these competi-tions gives us the opportunity
to raise funds to offer sen-ior athletes scholarships based on academics and service. Most recently in the 2018 season, out of 200+ applicants, CCCAM gave away approximate-ly $40,000 in senior schol-arships to 40 athletes - $20,000 in academics, $20,000 for service.

November 2018 Newsletter
Fall sports are finishing and some of you are decompressing. Others are just revving up with winter sports fast approaching. Then there are those who are continuing from one sport to the next. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO FOR STUDENTS AND ATHLETES! The fall meeting in Bismarck has concluded. It was an intense and fast paced two days. I was often taken back by the thoughtfulness, leadership, professional-ism, hard work, positive conversation, and foresight displayed by the executive board. I know that is a lot of adjectives but what an impressive group! Include in that praise Randy Johnson and the North Dakota Board. They are working hard, and I have no doubt the convention will be outstanding.
Some topics discussed were:
New regional configurations
Organization of committees
Updating bylaws, policies, and procedures
Adding of up to 4 states as members
Two new and exciting partnerships
3D Coaching
Glazier Clinics NHSACA has partnered with 3D coaching which is a program designed to help coaches understand their purpose in coaching and then implementing that pur-pose. Coaches in member states will receive a 20% DISCOUNT on the program. 3D coaching is a program on the rise and very popular. NHSACA has also partnered with Glazier Clinics. Schools in member states can now pay one fee for ALL coaches in the ENTIRE school to go to UNLIMITED clinics AND have access to an online vault of videos from other clinics. Glazier is also compensating state coaching associations and NHSACA for this! These partnerships, along with our growing relationship with Coach and AD magazine, will offer coaches educational resources; further increasing the benefit of being an NHSACA member state. These partnerships should be things to be excited about! Be on the lookout for the minutes which will contain additional infor-mation on these items, and more. In the next month we will have Coach of the Year nominations due, and Hall of Fame inductees will be sending their information in as well. Whether you are slowing down or speeding up this winter with coaching, best of luck, well wishes, and thank you for being a part of NHSACA. Yours in coaching, Justin Davie 3rd Vice President
The Michigan High School Tennis
Coaches Association (MHSTeCA) held
its fall meeting on Saturday October
27th at Haslett High School. MHSAA
assistant director Dan Hutcheson was
present to give his report on several
items, including the full implementation
of TennisReporting.com, a software
program used for recording all matches
played. This program should also be of
some help with the seeding process for
MHSAA tournaments going forward.
The 2018-2019 school year marked its
first mandatory seasons of use for all
schools wishing to compete in the state
tournament. Dan briefly discussed, and
then charged the board with finding
solutions to, the following issues: girls
playing on boys teams (allowed by law),
the success of the state seeding com-
mittee (99% for seeded players reach-
ing the semi-final round), growing the
sport of high school tennis in Michi-
gan, increasing participation at the
middle school level, looking at differ-
ent formats and scheduling options
(and locations) for future state tour-
naments, some concerns about
player and parent behavior towards
tournament personnel, the role of
“varsity B” teams, and potential back to back days of play for regional
tournaments in the case of inclement
weather. Members of the board will
be forming sub committees to further
investigate these major issues for the
MHSAA and MHSTeCA.
The board made the following pro-
posals and has forwarded them to
the MHSAA tennis committee for
consideration: creating a deadline
for substituting a player into the
lineup for regional or state tourna-
ment competition, allowing coaches
to text at the state finals (previously
not allowed), , more closely defining
the role of the roving umpires at
state finals, allowing an extra coach
at the state tournament level (up
from two to three), clarifying what
infraction(s) constitute a team point
penalty, allowing coaching at any
time for JV and middle school
matches (this would be different
from the varsity rule), what to do
about the fall start date in 2019
(which is one week later than last
year) – the MHSTeCA is asking that
practices start on Monday, August
12th, and for competitions to begin
on Saturday, August 17th.
This year’s coaches clinic is being moved to the west side of the state
and will be hosted by Hope College
on February 1st and 2nd, 2019. It will
provide a better opportunity for on
court demonstrations and activities
and attract great speakers. The
executive board is hopeful that attendance
among Detroit area coaches will remain strong
despite the additional travel. The board re-
mains concerned with the declining number of
boys playing tennis in the fall and will continue
discussion about the season switch and its
effect on our sport. Three coaches will be
inducted into the Hall of Fame this February:
Joe Gentle from North Muskegon, Nancy
Brissette of Essexville-Garber, and Scott Zer-
laut from Grant. Coaches of the year were
chosen, and all state athletes were named for
the boys season. Girls tennis begins on Mon-
day, March 11th. The next MHSTeCA board
meeting will take place after the conclusion of
the girls tennis season on Saturday, June 15th
at Haslett High School.

The candidate must have distin-
guished himself/herself with good
coaching ethics and promoted
good sportsmanship throughout
his/her coaching career. *The AD
or principal’s signature confirms this. Ten (10) years of coaching
outside of Michigan may be applied
to the application. Coaching at any
level may be applied as long as it is
a school sponsored interscholastic
sport. To receive a general coach-
ing certificate the candidate must
have been coaching at least one
sport per year at any level for the
requested number of years. To
receive specific certificates for a
single sport the candidate must
qualify for the specified number of
years in that sport. This can be at
any level. You cannot however
count more than one level or sea-
son for a sport in any one year. For
example, coaching both boys and
girls basketball during the same
school year counts as “1” year; coaching both 7th grade boys and
JV boys during the same school
year counts as “1” year. Up to three (3) years may be included for active
duty military service which delayed
or interrupted an applicant’s coaching career. Awards for 30
years and more (plaque) will have
the sports that the candidate
coached listed on the plaque. The
coach will be presented only one
award for each level of service
after 30 years.

The MHSCA Board of Directors
recognized Rich Tompkins
(1946-2015), former Executive
Director, for his service to high
school athletics by naming the
multi-sport athlete award in his
name.
Each school in the state can
nominate one boy and one girl
from their school for the
MHSCA Rich Tompkins Multi-
Sport Athlete Award. The only
requirement for the athlete is
that they must have participat-
ed in a least 3 sports for all four
years of high school. Infor-
mation will be sent out through
the help of the MIAAA to all
AD’s in the state.
Nominations are due by April
15th and must be submitted by
the school’s principal or AD. Each of the nominees are eval-
uated on the basis of their ath-
letic achievements (both indi-
vidual and team), scholarship,
leadership and service. The
committee utilizes a rubric to
rate the candidates.
All of the nominees receive a
high quality certificate from the
MHSCA in honor of being their
school’s honoree. Additionally, one boy and one girl from each
of the four classes of schools
(A, B, C, D) receive a plaque as
the MHSCA State Multi-Sport
Athlete of the Year.

Dear Athletic Director,
As president of Michigan High School Ski Coach-
es Association (MHSSCA) I send this letter on behalf of the MHSSCA board. Every year we
hold are MHSSCA annual coaches meeting in
conjunction with MHSAA rules meeting. Our meetings cover important topics and information
for your school downhill ski coaches and much of
our time is spent on MHSAA rules and MHSAA events (Regionals & State Finals)
In 2016-2017, the MHSAA named a new director of ski, Cody Inglis. The MHSSCA board and
myself were energized by the passion Cody
brought into the sport of Ski racing. During the last year, many sub committees have been
formed to help update rules and
processes of the sport, many ski coaches across the state have been
involved in the off-season working with MHSSCA board the MHSAA
and these types of updates have not
been done for many years. The MHSSCA board and myself believe
that these changes will have a
lasting impact on downhill ski racing in Michigan for years to come and
we want your ski coach to be a part of things!
This year’s MHSSCA annual meet-ing will be held for two days at Boyne Mt. Ski Resort in Boyne Falls
on October 7 & 8th. As you can see
from the attached agenda, we will have a two-day clinic packed full of
sessions and information that will help your ski coach. We will have CPR
and First aid recertification available
for all coaches on Saturday. Addition-ally on Saturday, we will also cover
MHSSCA business and awards along
with a ski vendor show. On Sunday, the clinic will conclude with MHSAA
rules, rule changes, MHSAA tourna-ment discussion (regional-state finals)
and a question and answer session
with Cody.
We are excited about this year’s clinic and think that your ski coach and
program will do nothing but benefit with their attendance. We need and
want your support to get your ski
coaches to the clinic and allow them this professional growth opportunity to
become involved with their sports
coaches association, the MHSS-CA.
I have attached information regarding room cost, clinic agenda and times
and dates of our clinic. If I can help
answer any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out at any time by
email mdfoyteck@comcas
t.net or my cell phone at 248-884-0039.
We look forward to serving schools, teams and coach-
es while promoting the
values of downhill ski racing in your community! Have a
great school year!
