beyond “just teaching.” I am humbled to work alongside such talented teachers and artists.
CBA would like to thank Cindy Stable and honor her during our winter shows. She has been a part of CBA from the beginning. Her years of devotion to the school and the many years of dancing will never be forgotten. The CBA community wishes Cindy the best of luck with her move across the country. Our shows and school will not be the same without her. Thank you Cindy.
I am so honored to have my ballet teacher, Ceci Klein, join us for this performance weekend. She spent so many hours on the floor fixing my feet, teaching me proper technique, making me stronger, believing in me, pushing me beyond what I thought I could do, and eventually letting me go out into the greater world of ballet. I am forever grateful for all that she has given me. Thank you Ceci.
In addition to the many dancers and families that make up CBA I would also like to thank my biggest support, my wonderful wife and talented choreographer, Anna, and our two beautiful sons, Liam and Tristan, as well as my parents, Suki and Tom Rigles, for all their support and love.
It fills me with great delight to have you begin the holiday season with Classical Ballet Academy’s winter productions of The Nutcracker, Cracked, The Children’s Nutcracker, and The Nutcracker Sweet Suite. We hope you enjoy the shows and experience the magic.
With utmost gratitude,Sarah Rigles, Director
WELCOMEWelcome to Classical Ballet Academy’s eleventh annual winter productions. In order to highlight all dancers we are pleased to offer four different shows this holiday season. Dancers in The Nutcracker auditioned in August and were accepted into Classical Ballet Academy’s Pre-Professional Program and for casting in this timeless holiday favorite. Dancers in our Contemporary, Modern and Jazz Pre-Professional Program auditioned and were awarded parts in Cracked. The Children’s Nutcracker is a charming production filled with dancers from Beginning Ballet through Level Four. It is impressive to see such young dancers perform this full length children’s production. The Nutcracker Sweet Suite features all our littlest dancers, ages two and a half to six. This show will melt your heart and give you a glimpse where the next generation of CBA dancers begins. During the past twelve years, Classical Ballet Academy has grown from a ballet school with only three dancers to more than four hundred; despite our size, we take pride in maintaining a small-school atmosphere and offering an environment where dancers of all ages and ability are treated as individuals and artists.
Every year a new crop of dancers matures and takes on more challenging roles. Last year we had a large number of graduating seniors. This year younger dancers have begun to fill their shoes. The tradition and opportunity of performing in The Nutcracker is a memory these dancers will have for a lifetime. I am so proud of the way all the dancers at CBA have developed their gifts and artistry in just three short months. They are the reason I go to work: their dedication, talent, energy and passion, make my job a true joy!
Part of my mission at CBA is to help dancers appreciate the intense work and commitment required for this
beautiful art form. It is essential for them also to appreciate all that their parents and families contribute to their dance education—and to the dance productions. More than two hundred parent volunteers donate their time and talents to make these shows happen. Every year I am overwhelmed by the support and gifts I find among the students and parents of Classical Ballet Academy. Every day in the hallways of CBA you will find parents sewing, collecting names of program sponsors, brainstorming new props/sets, organizing carpools, writing checks, and going above and beyond for their children and for the other dancers at CBA. Many of the dancers and families attend classes five nights a week and have sacrificed every Saturday and many Sundays to prepare for the performances. I would like to offer a special thank you to all the Committee Chairs and Head Volunteers. You amaze me with everything you do and give.
During the past twelve years, we have been lucky to have Pamella and Ralph Welker create amazing props and sets for CBA. Their artistic vision has created all of the backdrops and large prop pieces. We are blessed to have such artists among us. Jilene Modlin has spent years dreaming up our new “Mother Ginger” costume, and her skills have made it a reality. The community surrounding CBA is amazing. Classical Ballet Academy strives to put on professional-level productions using all student dancers and volunteers. I am deeply grateful for the CBA community. It feels like a large family that collaborates to create lasting memories as well as art.
The staff at CBA is also exceptional. All the teachers put so much time, energy, love and passion into everything they create. They inspire, choreograph and train dancers year after year, they go well

SARAH RIGLESDirector
Sarah Rigles has taught all levels of ballet in the Portland Metropolitan area for more than
twenty years. Sarah originally received her technical training at a small ballet school in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, directed by the renowned Ceci Klein; she then went onto train in the Vaganova method, accepted full scholarships to study at Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, and, at the age of sixteen, accepted a full-scholarship trainee position with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, where she performed and assistant-taught. Her attention to detail and love for classical ballet has allowed her to stage and direct full-length ballets, such as The Nutcracker, as well as prepare students for ballet companies, colleges and acceptances/scholarships to prestigious summer programs/year round study including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Kirov Academy, Pacific Northwest Ballet, HARID and The Bolshoi Ballet in Russia. She also works to prepare dancers for Youth America Grand Prix, the most acclaimed classical ballet competition. She has had many dancers place in the top twelve regionally and attend the finals in NYC. Her vast experience in the field, her passion for ballet and her dedication to the art form make Miss Sarah the ideal ballet school director. Under her direction, CBA has become one of the largest and best ballet schools in Oregon.
DIRECTORSCANDALEE WREDEAssistant Director
Miss Candalee began her dance training at age four with Marcelle Renoux, founder of the oldest
dance studio in Portland. Her training included both Royal Academy of Dance and Cechetti methods along with a variety of techniques. Miss Candalee’s dance studies were primarily in ballet and extensively in pointe and pas de deux. She also studied jazz, modern, folk, and theatrical dance. At age fourteen, Ms. Wrede was honored by becoming the youngest lead soloist for Renoux’s performing company, which allowed her to study and perform many classical roles and to learn the art of developing complete original story ballets. She was a dance major at the University of Oregon, and she has maintained a lifelong commitment to dance through ongoing study and teaching of its different forms, theories, and methods.
Miss Candalee began teaching in 1972 as the ballet mistress for the National Academy of Gymnastics, training both former and future Olympians. She owned and operated her own dance studio from 1981 to 1992. She established a Junior Ballet Company as part of the studio, and the members performed original ballets such as Pippi Longstocking and The Last Unicorn. She was granted an honorary teaching certificate from the State of Oregon when she designed and implemented a full dance and dance history program for Sam Barlow High School.
Miss Candalee has taught at CBA for more than seven years and was recently named Assistant Director. She teaches, choreographs, and mentors the staff at CBA. She hopes to promote a long legacy of dance training for the younger and very talented generation of dancers and studio owners in the Portland area.

THE NUTCRACKERClassical Ballet Academy’s Original Production of
The Nutcracker
ACT IFinely dressed guests begin to arrive at a lavish Christmas party. Young Clara and her brother, Fritz, are bursting with excitement at the prospect of holiday treats to come. The festivities get under way but are soon interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious guest, Clara’s great-uncle Drosselmeier. Drosselmeier gives toys to all the children and entertains the guests with a collection of lifelike mechanical dolls. Saving the best for last, he presents Clara, his favorite niece, with a very special gift: a wooden Nutcracker. Fritz snatches the precious new toy from his sister and carelessly breaks it. Clara’s friends comfort her as Drosselmeier does his best to repair the Nutcracker. After hours of dancing and celebration, the party draws to a close and the
guests depart. Clara, unable to fall asleep, tiptoes out of her bedroom to check on the Nutcracker still by the Christmas tree. She falls asleep on the sofa and has a magnificent dream. The Christmas tree grows to an enormous height and soon the room is filled with frightening rats and their Rat King. The Nutcracker, now life-size, arrives to protect Clara. He summons his soldiers and a battle ensues. With the help of the battle cats the rats are defeated, but the Rat Queen manages to stab the Nutcracker with her sword. While Clara cries over her fallen hero, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a Prince. Snowflakes dance as the Nutcracker Prince pushes Clara through the Land of the Snow in a magical sleigh.

ACT IIThe Nutcracker Prince escorts Clara from the Land of the Snow into the Land of the Sweets, where she is greeted by dazzling Peppermint Ice Candies. Clara sits upon a throne and is invited to behold the enchanting scene. One by one, colorful sweets, magical creatures from afar, and beautiful flowers swirl and dance before her. When the performances come to an end, everyone waves good-bye to Clara, and the Nutcracker ushers her away in his magical sleigh.

ANDREW ENRIQUEZGuest Artist
Andrew was born in Watsonville, California, and moved to Idaho at age twelve. He began beginning dance classes at North Idaho
College at age sixteen, Andrew quickly discovered his passion for ballet and began studying under Ceci Klein at her prestigious Ballet School of Coeur d’Alene.
After two years of rigorous training, Andrew accepted a scholarship to Long Beach Ballet. He was accepted as an apprentice at Anaheim Ballet the same year, where he danced roles ranging from Balanchine’s Serenade, Sleeping Beauty and original pieces by directors Larry and Sarma Rosenberg.
After joining the Army National Guard in 2008, Andrew was recruited as the sole dance-specific performer for the 2010 U.S. Army Soldier Show, a professionally produced Broadway-style touring production designed to enhance morale at military installations and events worldwide. He returned to the tour in 2015, playing for audiences from the 240th Army Birthday Ball in Washington D.C. to Camp Carroll, Korea. Classical Ballet Academy is deeply grateful for Andrew’s talent, commitment to travel as a guest artist and his passion for dance.
