R ev. Salanieta Varasikete, is the first married
female student to achieve the highest grades in
the Diploma in Theology programme at
Davuilevu Theological College. She was pre-
sented with the Dux award for Academic Excellence as
well as an award for highest marks in the Theology disci-
pline., at their graduation ceremony at the beginning of
this month.
“No time was wasted. Even a housewife, a woman,
a mother can excel in education and in the theological
field. I’m living proof of hard work and God’s grace,”said
Rev. Varasikete,. who hails from Korolevu, Nadroga .
Dean of Studies at Davuilevu Theological College,
Rev. Dr. Jerusha Neal congratulated Rev. Varasikete on
her achievement, saying that the 2016 Dux had gone
through many challenges to stand where she did.
“We praise God for her life, and her ministry, and
her witness and all that she will do in the Methodist
Church in Fiji.”
“Not only has she received the highest points total
over the three years of study in the Diploma in Theology
programme, she also received the highest number of ‘A’
grades among her fellow students.”
Rev. Varasikete is grateful to the Uniting Church in
Australia, through Uniting World, for the timely scholar-
ship she and her family received during the past three
years of her ministerial formation.
“There were challenges over these last three years,
especially in balancing my role as a theological student, a
mother and a wife. But as we progressed with our studies,
our spiritual life also developed, with God being our strongest
foundation during our time at Davuilevu. I’m grateful to the
Uniting Church in Australia and Uniting World for their assis-
tance and encouragement.”

“I am very grateful to my
husband taking up many
of the responsibilities at
home so that I could
concentrate on my stud-
ies, and you can see the
result today. That’s why
today he is dressed in the
same way as the male graduating students and why he came
up with me. We worked together to manage our family and I
want him to share in this success.”
Mr. Varasikete said that he was very and happy of his
wife’s achievement.
“There might be some men and some people who
believe that women should not be ministers; that they
should be doing secondary role to men in ministry. But God
has call not only men to his ministry. God has call us togeth-
er in His ministry to share His Word. I am very thankful that
He called my family to be a part of this Lako Yani Vou.”
In his graduation address, Methodist Church President,
Rev. Dr. Tevita Banivanua reminded the graduates that this
is just the end of one phase and there is another 3 years of
ministering reflecting about the wilderness journey of the
Exodus and the formation that continues.
“In your ministerial formation, just as in our New Exo-
dus, we must make every effort to discern the reasons for
the detours we encounter. What is God’s wisdom behind
every twist to our story? For those about to receive their
first posting and finding themselves in unfamiliar contexts –
culturally, geographically or even in terms of the Church
culture – take time to discern why God has placed you in
this place and in this time. What life lessons, what faith les-
sons does God want you to learn? What difficulty is God
protecting you from? With God there is no time that is
wasted time in the process of formation. Please keep this in
mind whenever these 6 years seem too long.”
Rev. Varasikete is looking forward to her first appoint-
ment and the next phase of her ministerial formation.
“As we go out to the field, we must simply share the
truth that is in us and reveal to each believer how good God
is and how great is his Love. God does not choose few to
receive His grace and leave others aside. Our message of
God’s grace is for everyone. As we minister to the people
we must lift their standard of living physically and spiritually,
and be with them in their cry and their everyday lives work-
ing together in the Kingdom of God, to understand the mes-
sage of the cross and the gift of Eternal Life in Jesus.”

I was recently writing a letter to the Fijian Methodist
community in Perth and concluded with a short mes-
sage where I reflected on the Angel Gabriel’s word to
Mary. Known in the Church as the Annunciation, this
event is found in Luke 1:26-38.
Mary was someone who found favour in God. Our Ro-
man Catholic sisters and brothers have a prayer known as
the “Hail Mary” in which Mary is referred to as being “full of
Grace.” I understand that this first part of the prayer comes
from the Annunciation.
As we think about Christmas and the birth of Jesus as
God being among us, let us also spend some time reflecting
on the process of God being incarnate in this world and how
God chose the vessel of His coming. He chose a young girl
called Mary or Mariam.
The Humility of Christmas
From what we know of her, Mary was not someone of
noble birth. She was not born to be a “Marama,” she was
from a family of high status. She was an ordinary girl. One
could say she was almost a peasant.
And yet, God chose her because of that humble back-
ground and her own humility. God always chooses people of
humility to do the greatest things. Throughout the Bible we
find this pattern of God choosing people at that moment of
humility.
Abraham and Sarah, two senior citizens without children,
found favour and were chose to be the parents of the Israel-
ites. Abraham is often referred to as “the father of faith.” In
our i-Taukei communities in Sunday School, children are
always asked who is, “Na Tama ni Vakabauta?” Their re-
sponse is “Eparama,” “Abraham”. They were an ordinary
humble couple chosen by God as symbols of God’s Grace.
When we look at the story of Moses, we find God choos-
ing him, not as a prince but as a fugitive wanted for murder;
an outlaw, living as a shepherd. Yet God chose him to be the
Law Giver.
Even when we look at David, the youngest and smallest of
Jesse’s sons, we see this again. When Samuel the Prophet
came to anoint one of Jesse’s sons on behalf of God, David
was found tending his father’s sheep. We hear that shep-
herds are humble people, caring for the sheep.
There are other examples of course.
Mary was chosen by God to be the vessel of His Word
made flesh, the incarnated Logos, because of her humility.
In today’s world, in the new shifts we see happening in
the world, in the new leadership we see in nations of the
world, in decisions that shape the world such as “Brexit,”
the recent US presidential elections and the recent politi-
cal crisis in Italy there seems to be, in my mind, the oppo-
site of humility. Far and near we find pride and arrogance
embodied in leadership, instead of humility, instead of
grace.
As we think of Christmas, let us think of our Fiji. If God
was to come to Fiji to choose a vessel for His message, a
vessel for His Kingdom, for His Love, for His Grace, who
would He choose?
Christmas is a time when God made a choice of who
are to be the vessels, the instruments, of His peace. He
chose a humble vessel, a humble person. He chose humili-
ty as the criteria.
That poses us a big challenge for us today.
We have people who are great: people of status; peo-
ple of influence; people who have made a name for them-
selves; people who are successful; people with money;
people who have climbed the ladder of success; people
who have power. Yet what makes them truly
great is if they can balance their power, their
wealth, their success and influence – with hu-
mility.
With people of position, status and power –
people of greatness – available, God still choos-
es the one who has humility.
This humility, was not only a defining character
for the vessel, it was a defining character for
the Word made Flesh, for Jesus. I can imagine
how Mary’s raising Jesus in humility led to His
human nature affirming His divine nature. We
can see this in the teaching and actions of Jesus.
He teaches his disciples about humility: “the
least is the greatest,” “the last will be first,” “do
not seek the place of honour.”
There are many passages in the Gospels and
the New Testament which speak of humility. In Philippians
chapter 2, verses 5 to 8, Paul writes of Jesus’ “kenosis”, his
self-emptying humility:
In your relationships with one another, have the same mind-
set as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equali-
ty with God something to be used to his own ad-
vantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the
very nature of a servant, being made in human like-
ness. And being found in appearance as a man, he
humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Jesus took humility as the way of God and the way for
the children of God which he calls us to follow.
This Christmas, be mindful of pride and practice humil-
ity.
The Grace of Christmas
Mary is found to be in favour with God. There is a
deeper dimension to the Greek word for favour: charis.
Almost everywhere in the New Testament, this word is
translated “grace.” Grace (and favour) is essentially a gift.
God’s grace is His unmerited favour. It is undeserved.
Mary was someone who was filled with God’s grace –
with His goodness, His love. Grace is receiving access to
the very presence of God. God’s grace is also His opera-
tional power, the force of His nature. He gives us this
grace to empower us to become like Christ. All these are
part and parcel of God’s unmerited gift of grace.
Mary was someone who was ready to receive from
God, the free gifts that God has for all of us. She was
ready; she was open to receiving and, just as important,
to responding to God’s grace. And her life was lived in
response to God’s grace.
We have so many people in Fiji who have opened
themselves up to receiving God’s grace and responding to
it.
The first Sunday in December was Disability Sunday
and I attended and preached at a service at the Wesley
Nasinu Methodist Church which has a ministry to people
living with disabilities.
The experience of a person who is visually impaired to
be able to read the scriptures so well in braille and per-
sons who are hearing and speech impaired to share the
gospel through sign-language and other persons who are
differently abled are endowed with God-given gifts of
grace that they have been open to receive and to which
they are responding, is truly life-affirming.
Yet if those of us who consider ourselves abled-bodied
people, and assume that we are better off than persons

with disabilities, took time to get to know the differently-
abled, to engage with them, we would perhaps be able to
understand and reflecting with humility, we would realise that
it us who are lacking in grace, us who are lacking in favour –
because we are not as open to receive or we are not as re-
sponsive as we could be, to God’s grace.
The Responsibility of Receiving Christ at Christmas
Mary’s holiness lies in her totally offering herself complete-
ly to God. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answers to the
angel. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38) As a
result she became aware of the difficulty of fully accepting
God’s gifts and God’s grace.
Joseph was not happy when he found out that Mary was
pregnant. He was contemplating leaving Mary when the angel
appeared to him and confirmed what Mary had told him
about her situation. Mary perhaps had not considered all the
difficulties she might face when offered herself to God to be
the theotokos, the “God-bearer.”
The totality and wholeness of giving yourself to God must
be done without concern of the consequence. It is a response
to the initial prevenient grace we receive from God.
The consequences of Mary’s giving herself completely to
God in this way were difficult. Imagine what life would be like
for her in her village of Nazareth, viewed as a teen pregnancy,
someone pregnant but not married.
Then there was of course the very difficult 9-day journey
to Bethlehem with her husband, for the census, during the
final stage of pregnancy; struggling while in labour to find
somewhere, to not only shelter but to also find someone to
assist with the birth; finding no help, no support; giving birth
in a stable.
These difficulties, these problems, these struggles are also
part and parcel of saying yes to God. These were unexpected
side-effects, for Mary, of saying yes to God. So people who
say yes to God have to be ready for their lives to take an
unexpected direction with unexpected and often difficult
experiences.
Mary possibly went without many of the celebratory as-
pects of marriage, of pregnancy and even childbirth. She faced
suspicion, she faced criticism. Being a participating recipient of
God’s grace is not a free ride.
And yet, ultimately, Mary delivered. She delivered on her
responsibility. She delivered the awaited Messiah, the Saviour
of the world. We do not know what the impact of our saying
yes to God will be.
The Position of the Vulnerable at Christmas
Our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers give prominence
to Mary in their theology and liturgy. Mary’s role as the vessel
for the Messiah and Jesus’ own constant elevation of women
gives testimony for the true position of women – there is a
prominence of space for women according to our Christian
faith.
As we reflect on the Mary story and the place of women
in the Gospels and our current social situation, with so much
violence and abuse perpetrated on women and children in
our society today, we can only accept that we need to do
more.
The church, the vanua, and the government, all of us – we
need to do more.
Throughout the bible, the women are rightly chosen by
God, in many ways, to be part of God’s salvation history.
For example, the story of Moses, who would be God’s
hand of deliverance for the Hapiru (Hebrew), is full of wom-
en as protectors, guides, partners: the midwives who diso-
beyed Pharaohs’ orders to kill the newborn males; Pharaoh’s
daughter who rescues baby Moses; Miriam, Moses’ sister,
who watches over him as a child and is later a prophetess,
and Zipporah Moses’ wife who saves him when God attacks
on their way to Egypt.
Mary can be seen as a culmination of these prominent
roles of women in God’s plan of salvation.
Yet in this 21st century, violence against women and chil-
dren is so prevalent. Instead of the prominence of women it
is the prominence of gender-based violence and child abuse
that is in our news and everywhere we look. We have not
learned from what God intends for us human beings and
other creation. We violate and abuse the environment just
as we do women and children. We regard all of them as
lowly from our perspective.
Yet we forget that what we regard as lowly, God finds
favour with. We forget what God’s grace and favour are
meant to represent in this world.
In Mary’s song, the “Magnificat,” we hear the prophetic
words of what the Kingdom of God is like:
“for he has looked on the humble estate of his serv-
ant.” (Luke 1:48)
“he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their
hearts;”(Luke 1:51)
“he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;”(Luke 1:52)
“he has filled the hungry with good things, and the
rich he has sent away empty.” (Luke 1:53)
For us in Fiji, this Christmas let us go back to Mary and
look at how it is the lowly that God uses for His will in this
world.
We need leaders who are not full of pride, who are not
arrogant, who are not violent in thought, word or deed, who
will not abuse the authority we give them. We need leaders
who are humble and have a preference for the lowly, the
marginalised and the vulnerable.
This is the example that Jesus sets and the challenge that
He gives all of us.
His disciples argue over who will sit at His right or His
left, but Jesus is a centrist. He is the centre that works to
pull the right and the left together so that there is balance. In
the past the world was pulling to the left. Now it is pulling to
the right. Jesus brings things to the centre.
This is position of being a Christian, to bring those with
differences together - right wing, or left wing – to reconcile
them and bring harmony and restoration between humanity
and to nature. To make this world a better place.
Pride and arrogance can be seen in our approach to
Christmas today. The media is flooded with advertisements
which urge consumption at Christmas. The commercialisa-
tion of Christmas is corrupting our understanding of this
very special and spiritual time. We sing and we hear the
carols expressing ‘joy to the world’.
Yet those who have less or who have nothing feel their
lowliness the most at this time. They feel out of place. The
lowly are not rejoicing. And in our celebration, many of us
forget those for whom the first Christmas was so important:
the outcasts, the different, the poor, the refugee, the vulner-
able.
We treat Christmas as a once are year event, an excuse
to eat more, drink more, spend more.
But the first Christmas was the inauguration of God’s
Kingdom of love, of compassion, of peace, kindness, selfless-
ness, of truth and of justice; of God’s grace.
How will your Christmas measure up to the first Christ-
mas?
For Christmas to be realised; for Christmas to be really
be Christmas; it must be full of grace. We must be full of
grace. We must be open to receiving this grace. We must be
open to share that grace with everyone; whether we think
they are deserving of it or not.
We must not only seek to be treated with humility, we
must live with humility and teach our children humility.
These are the true Christmas gifts we can receive and
give to others.

Rev Dr Tevita N Banivanua
was among the 400 people
who joined the Yellow Ribbon
Walk, at the beginning of November. The
walk, which began at 5am started at Albert
Park and ended at Ratu Sukuna Park, was
organised by the Fiji Correctional Services
to raise awareness and engage the commu-
nity in giving ex-offenders a second chance
at life and to inspire a ripple effect of con-
certed community action to support ex-
offenders and their families.
Eight of the inmates were also part of the
Yellow Ribbon walk .

T he commissioning of the first batch of couples from eight Divisions within the Suva
– Nausori area was held at the Centenary Church in Suva on Sunday 6th Novem-
ber. The couples went through 6-12 months of intensive training both in theory and
practical under the supervision of Mr. Pita and Mrs. Mere Nacuva, of the Family
One Ministry, under the Campus Crusade for Christ Family Life Ministry. The cooperation
began in 2014 after the approval of the Conference and was sealed in September 2016 when
the Church President Rev. Dr. Tevita N. Banivanua signed the Memorandum of Understand-
ing with the President of the Family Life Ministry, Dr. Dennis Rainey in Little Rock, Arkansas,
U.S.A The commissioning was conducted by the Secretary of Christian Citizenship & Social
Services, Rev. Iliesa Naivalu.

MCIF D ELIVERS FOOD RATIONS TO DAWASAMU

T he Disaster Management Unit of
the Methodist Church in Fiji under
the Department of Christian Citi-
zenship & Social Services had in the
past 2 weeks delivered groceries and food
rations to Natadradave and Delakado Villages.
This was in response to their request for
assistance as there are hundreds of sick people
who have been billeted in their homes sharing
their food. Men of the 2 villages had spent days
and nights tending the sick and unable to at-
tend to their plantations.
Food rations delivered by the Church to
the 2 villages could last for 2-3 weeks. There
are 26 families at Natadradave who are all
Methodists while Delakado has 82 families com-
prises of Methodists and other denominations.
The rations were intended for all the fami-
lies in each village irrespective of their denomi-
nation. The Church directed its contributions to
the 2 villages in view of the effect of Severe
Tropical Cyclone Winston as they share all that
should be for each family in their recovery stage
and in view of the humanitarian work the villag-
ers are burdened with in helping the thousands
of people flooding to both Natadradave and
Delakado every week. We have been informed
that the relif is shared to other villages in the
District of Dawasamu.
I n a special ecumenical service, newly
elected leaders of the Fiji Council of
Churches were inducted to their
roles at Centenary Church in Octo-
ber.
The service was led by Methodist
Church in Fiji General Secretary, Rev.
Dr. Epineri Vakadewavosa, while the
induction was presided over by Arch-
bishop Peter Loy Chong of the Roman
Catholic Archdiocese of Suva. Repre-
sentatives from the different churches
that make up the council performed song
hymns, acts of worship, read scripture
and led prayers.
The guest preacher was Principal of
the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia’s
St.John the Baptist Theological College
and current President of the South Pacif-
ic Association of Theological Schools
(SPATS), Rev. Amy Chambers.
Methodist Church in Fiji President,
Rev. Dr. Tevita N Banivanua is the new
President of the FijI Council of Church-
es.. He was elected by the secret ballot
in the 2016 Annual General Meeting of
Fiji Council of Churches to be its Presi-
dent for the next three years. The role
of President is to preside over and chair
all council meetings and be one of the
council's trustees as well.

T he Methodist Church Standing Committee
last month resolved that the Methodist
Church will support the Fiji Council of
Churches in marking Break the Silence Sun-
day to raise awareness on Violence against Women and
Children.
Break the Silence Sunday takes place the Sunday before
the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence
(25th November to 10th December.
This year, Break the Silence Sunday is 20th November
2016.
Running from November 25 – the UN International
Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women to De-
cember 10 – International Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of
Activism Against Gender Based Violence, is a global cam-
paign to focus our efforts towards working to eliminate vio-
lence against women in our families, our communities and
our world.
This year, a collective wide effort by the Fiji Council
of Churches (FCC) has begun to mark the 16 Days of Activ-
ism and Break the Silence Sunday.
Following a motion by The Most Reverend Dr. Win-
ston Halapua, Head of the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia at
the FCC’s regular meeting on September 15, 2016; members
made a consensus decision to support the 16 Days of Activ-
ism campaign and the “Break the Silence” Sunday (BTS Sun-
day) initiative.
On Break the Silence Sunday, FCC member churches
will focus their attention on the issue of gender based vio-
lence and child abuse, through liturgy – prayers, scripture
readings and sermons and recommit to being violence free
communities and advocates.
“NGOs and the civil society are raising this issue and
we need to do this too. We should take the message to the
church and address this from the pulpit,” said Pastor Simione
Tugi, General Secretary of the Fiji Council of Churches.
“I believe that we are very close to the communities,
we deal with them 52 weeks in a year, and almost every day.
I believe that if we can tackle from that, then the issue can
be reduced.”
Archbishop Peter Loy Chong of the Roman Catholic
Church’s Archdiocese of Suva believes that gender-based
violence, domestic violence and violence against children are
serious issues that faith communities need to be not only
aware of, but also bring to the forefront of their ministries.
“Based on the research carried out by the Women’s
Crisis Centre, and also my experience with family and youth
ministries, this is be a real concern for faith community and
the whole country. The report on the Women’s Crisis Cen-
tre, shows that we are like the number 4 country that have
the highest of the case of Gender Violence, Domestic Vio-
lence, so that’s very alarming. “
“Most of the things that young people share during
our youth based programmes, are various forms of violence
in the family - physical, verbal and just neglect.”
The FCC member churches in their September 2016
meeting also requested the Christian Network Talanoa
(CNT) to produce service resources and readings for this
year’s inaugural FCC wide effort towards BTS Sunday and 16
Days of Activism.
The CNT instigated the BTS Sunday in 2013. BTS
Sunday is marked on the Sunday immediately preceding No-
vember 25. This year, BTS Sunday will fall on November 20.
However if the day does not suit some of the member
churches, they may choose another Sunday from 20 Novem-
ber to 10 December.
CNT was established in 2013. It is a Fiji based ecu-
menical network of organised women’s and Christian wom-
en’s units working on removing the culture of silence and
shame around violence against women especially in faith
based settings. The network meets on a monthly basis at the
House of Sarah Office, Anglican Diocese of Polynesia.
This issue is Priority for me,” said Archbishop Win-
ston Halapua of the Anglican Church’s Diocese of Polynesia.
“We have made policies in the church, so it is a way
of life. It is our businesses as Christians in engaging in God’s
activity.” The people outside can only see what we are do-
ing. We have the H ouse of Sarah and all the ordained minis-
ters and we have all our committees and it is now in a cur-
riculum from Preschool, Primary and Secondary”.
In another first, the Fiji Council of Churches Cam-
paign also includes a commercial for television and cinema
which features church leaders speak-
ing out against gender-based-violence
and violence against children.
“It is important that we not only
address the sin of gender-based vio-
lence and child abuse within our
church community, but as faith lead-
ers we speak with one voice in con-
demning it and calling for our com-
munities and homes to be safe,” said
Fiji Council of Churches president,
Rev. Dr. Tevita Banivanua.
The message is indicative of the
work that many churches are already
doing or have started doing in their
own faith communities.
Major Uraia Dravikula of the Salva-
tion Army, who is the Vice President
of the Fiji Council of Churches, be-
lieves that while many churches have been working on ad-
dressing this issue within their own faith communities, there
is a need to bring the discussion into a broader forum.
The sad thing is, that many Christian men make ex-
cuses for their behavior. They say that it is their duty to do
such things to women. They make the excuse that it comes
from God for them, to do those things. But that is false.
Doctrinally it is not correct, Christ does not support those
kinds of things, Christ elevate the status of women and chil-
dren in the community and he comes up hard against those
who have those kind of standards in the community especial-
ly those within the church dressed in sheep clothing but they
are vultures, they are wolves and it is sad because Christ
comes out strongly against those perpetrators.”
Major Dravikula said that it Break the Silence Sunday
is important because it brings the issue of gender-based vio-
lence and violence against children front and centre in the
church, where it needs to be.
“We say ‘No, no, no. Let us keep it hush-hush. It is a
vakamadua thing to talk about these issues’. But it is not a
vakamadua to talk about this thing; it is something that we
must come up with for the children and the women. They
are our future.”
The commercial, as well as an accompanying docu-
mentary, produced by the Methodist Church in Fiji Depart-
ment of Communications, will broadcast and be screened
during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Vio-
lence and be made available via social media.
The initiative is supported by UNWomen. UN
Women Multi Country Representative, Aleta Miller congrat-
ulated the Fiji Council of Churches and the House of Sarah
for their innovative approach to raise awareness to end vio-
lence against women and girls.
"We are incredibly proud of be supporting this cam-
paign work and to be in partnership with faith based or-
ganisations, which are a key part of violence prevention
work in the Pacific," says Ms Miller.
Last Sunday, I joined in a Break the Silence Sunday
service at Dudley Church organized by the Methodist
Church in Fiji’s Women Fellowship, Men’s Fellowship and
Christian Citizenship and Social Services Departments.
Guest preacher, Rev. Dr. Cliff Bird, Regional Coordi-
nator of Uniting World’s Pacific programmes spoke on the
need to weave our Christmas preparations in the season
of Advent with the narratives within the 16 Days of Activ-
ism Against Gender-Based Violence.
“Culture and religion can and has been used to justify
the lack of gender equality and gender violence. It is good
to see that the church leaders have spoken out with one
voice to call inequality and violence a deeply rooted “sin”.”
Rev. Dr. Bird began his message by reflecting on the
statistics from the Pacific region which should although the
mostly Christian region spoke much of having life in abun-
dance, the reality was many did not.
In his conclusion he offered this challenge:
“As we journey through Advent and the 16 Days of
Activism, let us remember that Jesus comes to give life in
abundance. We must always ask ourselves - Is the church
affirming life? Are we affirming life?”

This is from Sinai at South Camp and
this is our seven months going on now and
the soldiers are fine and in good health and
the boys are doing well specially working
in a new working environment with the
South Battalion soldiers who are Ameri-
cans.
It's getting colder now at South Camp
as we are drawing closer to festive sea-
son . At the same time the boys are enjoy-
ing their holy land tour and this week on
Thursday the Cairo tour is finally opened
for us where the boys are going to enjoy
their site seeing specially the pyramid .
Our work here is also changed when
we came down to South Camp .Actually its
a American Base camp and our work has
slightly change to meet this new environ-
ment and its situation.
We are now engaged in manning the
gates and the tower as securities of the
MFO CAMP where the MFO force com-
mander and its command team resides
with other MFO contingents and other
Civilians staff. Their life is at the hand of
our boys who are manning the gates and
the tower of South Camp.
Our tasking has also changed. Now we
are engaged in EG tasking and MOT and
also serving out their in the three field
sites as MFO observers that is to observe
verify and report..
The Lotu is paramount here at South
Camp. Our soldiers uphold and value it all
the time. It enhances their work and their
faith in God specially when their life is at
risk in engaging their primary tasking. Its
nothing new in the last 35 years of serving
Peace in this war torn country. We have
lots of testimonies to tell in the last thirty
five years of observing Peace here at Sinai.
Some have retired and some are deceased
and some are preparing for their retiring
and have good memories and testimonies
about the saving acts of God during their
operation here at Sinai.
The Lotu is paramout here and that is
nothing new to all the Fiji soldiers. Many
have become new preachers while serving
here at Sinai and some have become con-
firmed member and also want to renew
their life with God at Sinai during there
time here.
One of the most challenging tasks here
as chaplain, is when a soldier is brought to
my attention of family problem at home.
Then I am there to counsel him when his
life is at a high risk of committing suicide. I
am there to help him, guide him that he
will not commit suicide and many other
family issues to deal with that make my
work more challenging and interesting
when dealing with soldiers at the operation
area.
I thank God for his wisdom and
knowledge and the prayers that said, from
a small Island nation, thousands of miles,
faraway from the other side of the globe
that has been making an impact to the lives
of our soldiers here. That also help our
work here at Sinai.
The Sinai Church Programmes are as
follows :
First Week of a New Month:- Holy
Communion, Lagasere va Kabani and
SoliThat week is Tabu week: no kva or
alcohol until the following week.
That first Sunday of the month, I con-
ducted Holy Communion on the two
remote sites that near from the camp.
The following Sunday is the two re-
mote sites that are faraway from South
Camp.
First week of everymonth from Mon-
Thursday [ Tabu Week ] I have a spe-
cial session with a Battalion [caka vuli]
at 4-5pm in the afternoon.
After the tabu week [2nd week until
the last week of a month] :
Monday- Thursday [ Lotu]
Company Church Service From Mon-
day to Wednesday
Battalion Church Service on Thursday
Pastoral visitation:
I have visited four field sites and conduct-
ed pre-marriage counselling session with
the boys and I have slept in all the remote
sites where our boys are serving and also
knowing what they are facing.
Chain Prayer is conducted every first
week of a new month during the tabu
week on Saturday from 6 pm to 12 am
midnight..

Mauri from Stephen Whitmee High
School(SWHS) at Morikao in Abaiang,
Kiribati!
Having arrived on 16th of May,2016, the
School was already beginning its first week
of Term 2. The reception by the School
Principal, her Spouse and members of Staff
and supporting Staff started when we sat
foot on the Island of Abaiang and it went
right into the night, at SWHS in Morikao.
We could sense from our arrival the
high expectation and goodwill of our imme-
diate neighbours. Yes, we can say that we
have been accepted with both hands and
heart, so we were ready to deliver for the
sake of the students (about 150) already
waiting to be taught.
Now as we come towards the end of
the year, we can say that the Kiribati way
or culture is uniquely one of the best in the
Pacific and is hardly spoiled by outside influ-
ence. Christianity has truly overridden all
the aspects of their lives and the effects has
trickled down to the children who possess
a lot of respect and humility. With a nostal-
gic feeling we remember Fiji was once like
that 20-25 years back.
This culture of humility, simplicity and
respect provide the platform for our work
here, and surely it has given us the satisfac-
tion and peace after each day of work.
Hence, we look forward to returning
next year, and if given a chance we are
more than willing to stay on for another
two or three years, when we still have the
energy to teach and share with the people
here.
Lo, my wife has also enjoyed her stay
here and has also been instrumental in tak-
ing part with our mothers and local com-
munity in moral support, as well as teaching
students, as can be seen in the pictures
attached, how to sing at the School
Chapel.
Perhaps the biggest challenge here
is the acquisition of the English Lan-
guage, but that is manageable when
more exposure is given for the language.
Now we anticipate returning to Fiji
to meet our Sponsors the Methodist
Church in Fiji and family at home. We
vouch for the fact, that we have truly
being loved and respected by your coun-
terparts the Kiribati Uniting Church at
Antepuka and here at Morikao and
Abaiang.

INTRODUCTION
The period of September to 23 Nov may best be reflected on as a period of consolida-
tion, which includes making a start on implementation of activities that are still pending.
And the focus on project administration was on meeting project reporting requirements
and the reviewing of implementation strategies together with UnitingWorld.
It was a critical period as the Project had to engage a new replacement Administrative
Assistant.

1. Analysis of Building Assessment - see attached notes
o Divisions visited in this period were Cakaudrove, Bua, Tavua, Ba,
Vuda, Nadi Verata, Bau.
2. Provisions of Chain-saws and Generator – see attached notes
o Chain-saws were provided widely, primarily to clear fallen logs from
accesses to plantations. Feedback through MCIF assessment that
most critical to address the clearing of farm accesses and gardening
areas. Circuit Ministers will manage usage in rotation by affected
households. Government and other partners are promoting fast
growing vegetables and staple crops
o Chain-saws are further used to mill timber in the repair of Churches
and residences e.g. in Ra.
o Generators were substitutes for inconsistent power supply, assist in
power tools used for re-construction and assist in use of PA system
during congregational worship reaching out to the communities.
3. Criteria for assistance were approved in the last Board meeting. This has awak-
ened interest and generated actions in many Churches.
o Attached is the recommendation for the first batch of assistance to
partially damaged Churches. (Those with a Committee embarking on
repair work and have a Bank Account).
4. A number of Churches have genuine difficulties opening a new account in the
short span to date. To continue MCIF support it is recommended that they be
granted half the fund paid into a nominated Bank Account but to relax use of
that fund to allow them to open their own Church building account. The bal-
ance paid pending on a new account.
DISPOSAL OF CYCLONE DEBRIS
1. MCIF partnered the Tavua Rural Local Authority in its Tavua Clean-up Cam-
paign - about to complete.
2. Village communities were mobilised by Tuirara Levu Ra to collect and bury non-
recyclable cyclone debris in the circuits T/C Rakiraki, T/C Nalawa and T/C Na-
korotubu. This was on a humanitarian recovery activity using the concept of
“work for cash”.
3. Tuirara Levu Ra organised a partnership with Rakiraki Rural Health Authority to
support the clean-up in T/C Rakiraki.
4. This concept has been extended to Ovalau where the Lomaiviti Provincial Office
will mobilise and manage the clean-up in villages nominated.
PROVISION OF FOOD PACAKAGES
1. Supplies were procured and two deliveries made to Natadradave
2. Koro has also requested assistance to villages vulnerable for very little
signs of recovery from income earning sources. First batch of supplies to
leave today Monday 5 December.
PROPOSED AMMENDED MOA (Memorandum of Agreement)
The Unit has accepted the Final Draft and now sent back to UnitingWorld to process for

Penaia E Baleinamau is expected to leave the Project at start of the2017 academ-
ic year for training in Davuilevu Theological College
Mr. Samuela Laliqavoka, a retired lecturer (civil engineering) is likely to join the
Project early next year as the Training Facilitator / Instructor with responsibility
to monitor all repair activities and conduct user-training on Facilities Audit Sur-
vey.
Mr Laisenia Koto is to take up the Training Instructor post with specific respon-
sibility on promoting sustainable and disaster risk reduction practices in agricul-
ture.

The following is a report from the Health In-
spector Tavua, Jese Vatuwaqa
Before the collection started the officers of the
Tavua Rural Local Authority hand out notification
slips on the clean-up campaign to each community
one week prior to the collection date. Each commu-
nity were advised on the date and time of the collec-
tion on the notification slips. Eight (8) loads of rub-

bish was collected and taken to Ba rubbish Dump.
The area that didn’t collect any rubbish will be re-
visited and the community will organize for another

spent 6 years as the Gender and

bility Forum. She was responsible
for the women and Youth with the
Disabilities Program in the Pacific
before taking on the position. She is
thankful to the church for giving her
an opportunity to show what she can
do. When questioned about what
changes she would like to see as a
person with disability she says that
the Church has reached a milestone
from what is was over the past years.
She is grateful that the church is be-
ing very inclusive for women and
children in Leadership, decision mak-
ing and also seeing persons with Dis-
ability being part of the church pro-
grams. She also mentions that she is
thankful to the churches that have
made renovations to the church
buildings making it accessible for all
people with disabilities. Ms Navoce
will be with Uniting World for one
year.
CLOSING THE C IRCLE : TRADITIONAL ARTEFACTS TO BE REPATRIATED FROM AUSTRALIA TO F IJI
U nitingWorld hosted family members of
two former missionaries to Fiji, as they
repatriated several ‘Tabuas’ to the Meth-
odist Church In Fiji and Rotuma. The giv-
ing of a Tabua (made from whales teeth) is a sign of
great respect, and its cultural significance depends on it
not being kept by one person but given away and
passed around the community. Wes Gibbons, the
grandson of Rev W.E Bennett, and Michael Mills, the
grandson of Rev William Green presented the Tabuas
to Rev James Bhagwan of the Methodist Church in Fiji
in acknowledgement of the original respect shown by
the Fijian people. “These are priceless to us," said Rev
Bhagwan. "A Tabua carries the love of people, the love
of the land and the love of God. A Tabua is never
meant to be owned. Just like the whale, just like the
spirit of God and just like the mission of the church - it
is always moving. A Tabua is the highest honour that
we can bestow on someone. So I accept this gift with
great humility and love." "These are very important
reminders for us today as we continue to strengthen
our relationship with the Uniting Church in Australia. I
receive them knowing we are brothers and sisters
working together,” he said.

M INI-MCIF S CHOOLS
EDUCATION CONFERENCE By Master Waisake Ravatu,
Secretary for Education, MCIF
In our bid to map out our target areas for our schools in
the next 10 years – Decade of Education, your Education Of-
fice will be facilitating the first of planning sessions next month
for brainstorming purposes.
Now almost completing my second year in office, and after
visiting our schools, I’ve picked up needed areas to address
and these have been taken through the usual channels –
monthly Board Meetings and Standing Committee Meetings
and now 2 Annual Conferences. I’ve realized though that oth-
er suggestions continue to come via other sources – Annual
Meetings, Ministry of Education, Education Personnel, School
Personnel, MOSA, Colleagues, Leadership, etc. prompting the
need to get in representatives of all these to a sequence of
meetings where we could put all of these ideas together. No
doubt this is the way to go as it would ensure ownership of
our education journey – a vital necessity indeed as there is a
lot to do and the journey fraught with countless and varied
challenges (as it was in the original Exodus), thus the vital ne-
cessity of all stakeholders working as a team.
After obtaining a draft, it is envisaged that it would be
disseminated quickly to our stakeholders in specific groups for
their responses – School Heads, School Boards, Ex-Scholars/
MOSA, PTFA, Students, Divisional Education Committees.
Once it has gone its rounds, with accommodation of inputs,
the Road Map or Education Blueprint will be taken
through the Education Board, Standing Committee and 2017
Conference before implementation.
I hope that as copies of NAI TABE comes to our Divisions,
our Divisional Committees will do their own preparation by
drawing from their congregation – individual churches, circuits
and then division levels.
I humbly seek for your cooperation and fervently ask for
your prayers – individual and corporate!
Beacon Media Ministry is an interdenominational Christian Education Ministry originating from Australia with a
goal to bring students to know God through a God-centered classroom environment, that ties in well with
our own MCIF primary object to give “ instruction in a Christian setting to children; both Christian and non-
Christian” alike (1984 Constitution).
I am thankful to the Church hierarchy/leadership/conference for seeing it fit to accept them as a partner in this
journey that we are undertaking, especially at this start, where we are trying to consolidate our direction, personnel
and resources.
While they had worked prior to 2015 in some of our primary schools, I started to work with them last year after
seeking clearance from the Church and have continued to work closely with them since; I believe their concentration
at our primary schools is vitally important they being the formative years for our children.
This year, we were again delighted to work with them and outlined below are areas they worked in:
1.0 Review of our Primary Schools Christian Education CE Curriculum
I am happy to advise that using our existing CE Curriculum – one they have labeled as an excellent curricula,
after a 1-year period they have completed the much awaited review last September. For our information the re-
vised curricula:
1.1 has a CE teachers Guide, a pupil’s workbook and supplementary notes for CE Teachers.
1.2 is on discs so making it easier for us reviewing purposes after the trial period, being mindful that the
draft is ours to change as we see fit during the trial period.
1.3 is to be on trial in 2017 before being printed for use in 2018.
2.0 Special Workshops
The team, with their very passionate and hardworking local co-workers in Losalini Tuwere and Patrick Bower,
conducted workshops for a 2-weeks duration in their September trip consisting of:
2.1 Teachers Aide Volunteer Training (3-days). Involved the training of volunteers (parent, church
member, etc.) in our Suva Nausori primary schools to help students who are either non or slow reader in
Year 3. This is a growing problem in our schools and given the increasing influence of unrestrained
use of mobiles and computers flooding the world now with increasing school roll and teacher work-
load, this is set to increase in magnitude. We are thankful to Beacon Media for recognizing this problem,
one that Headteacher of Annesley Infant School, Davuilevu Methodist Primary and Veiuto Primary School (non
-MCIF School), where BEACON Media have worked, have valued immensely; the target is to ensure every
student in our primary schools becomes a reader by the time they move to Year 4 thus ready to sit for exams
from Year 6. Programme is set to cover the rest of our primary schools from 2017. We seek your support in
the allowance of these volunteers as MOE would not pay them from School Grant.
2.2 Empowerment/Professionalism of teachers/School Heads
This was covered in 2 sessions:
2.2.1 Christian counseling (4-6pm) – 1 afternoon session. With growing indiscipline and
general breakdown of values, Christian teachers, Chaplains/School Deaconesses were blessed to be
at this greatly empowering session to deal with their students by Christian Counselors.
2.2.2 Professionalism
School Heads and teachers attended this one Saturday (9am-3pm) session at Epworth
Hall where Qase Levu, who conducted devotion, inspected the completed CE Curriculum.
2.2.3 Year 3 teachers
This 3-afternoon/1-Saturday session was specially for Year 3 teachers empowering
them to work with the Teacher Aide volunteers in their schools to ensure ideal working
relations between them.
We are indeed indebted to these passionate and committed volunteers especially Paul and Cheryl Reid of Australia
and their local co-workers for such sacrifice for the realization of our mission in our schools.
MCIF – BEACON MEDIA PARTNERSHIP
SOLEVU OPENING REPORT 2016 is a special year for MCIF’s Lako Yani Vou journey as it not
only was declared our Year of Education in April but the pro-
nouncement also heralded a 10 year (2016-2025) commitment by
the church and its education stakeholders for a collective and
concerted effort in improving the outlook and performance of our
31 schools.
While individual schools had started on this journey as per
need, as they came across much needed funds/savings, on the
whole it’s been really dependent on our different schools manage-
ment and administration.
On the collective front though, other than the declaration this
year, the first tangible effort was witnessed through the 2016
Solevu Opening on Friday 14th August by the ex-scholars of our
31 schools along with their PTFA, for some schools.
Given the 11th hour call to them to open our Solevu this year,
the Church Leadership and our Education Office is most grateful
indeed for not only the show of support demonstrated at Toorak
on that memorable day but also the huge grand total of
$227,176.86 collected. We couldn’t help but agree with the senti-
ments expressed by many ex-scholars on why the invitation was
late – yes indeed for we are left to wonder now on what could
have been had they been given time.
To me as I attempted to attend to the much needed arrange-
ment prior to the day, liaison on the day and now to facilitate
disbursement of the funds to the schools, I just realized the huge
resource, the ex-scholars are to us as a body (present in all levels
of almost every conceivable organization in our nation and
abroad), some in very influential positions.
In recognition therefore of this reality, we have not only asked
our schools to strengthen their ties with their respective ex-
scholars association form one if its still non-existent or reactivate
the dormant ones. Furthermore, MOSA (Methodist Old-Scholars
Association) which has spearheaded this much needed resurgence
has been asked to stay actively engaged with the Church through
a seat in the Education Board and to actively participate in our
forums.
May I take this opportunity to extend my sincerest apprecia-
tion to the executive committee, especially Tevita Tabalailai
(President), Asena Tunisau (Secretary), and to every MOSA mem-
ber here and abroad; tribute must be paid also to the Senior MO-
SA Executive who came in numbers also on the day joining with
younger generation. It is our hope
that the two will merge into a
powerful force in the future.
I would be failing in this report
if I did not acknowledge and men-
tion our 3 Government Schools –
ACS, RKS and QVS who taught us
some lessons in solidarity, sacrifice
and Christian giving, vinaka vakale-
vu to the Executive Committees
and members of ex-scholars of
these schools for the handsome
contribution of $8,500.
I see all our schools coming to
life as a group in the next 10 years
and it’s heartening to see visible
changes made as our heads and
management begin to take owner-
ship of our Decade’s vision.
Once again, a big vinaka va-
kalevu for this year to everyone
including the Church leadership
and Education Board for the con-
tinued support and I look forward
to venturing out into our Exodus
in the years ahead.

step foot again at YPD, she was grateful
that she was invited twice to be a guest
speaker for the Christian Education
classes. She talks about “The faith jour-
ney and the missionary of a Methodist
woman” this faith journey of a person
depends very much on the nurturing
and the development of faith from early
childhood and coming growing upwards.
The aim of Christian Education is to
nurture and develop individuals in com-
munities have a personal experience and
counter with Jesus Christ and accepting
him as one Personal Saviour and Lord
and being Empowered by the Holy Spirit
to live as a responsible citizen in a re-
demptive community of Faith Witness-
ing as Christ Representatives. Mrs. Tevi
stressed that Education is very im-
portant today, but education or learning
that helps you to be a better citizen and
a member of the church.
T he Methodist lay Training
Centre was established in the
60s and the 80s where Mrs.
Lorine Tevi a lay person was
the Principal of the school; she served
as a General Secretary of the Pacific
Conference of Churches as well as the
sub unit of Education of the World
Council of Churches in Geneva, Swit-
zerland 1982 – 1991. Upon returning
back home she served as a staff at the
Pacific Theological College, Lecturer at
Davuilevu Methodist Theological Col-
lege, presently as a volunteer serving as
Vice Chair of the Pacific Islands Associa-
tion of Non-Governmental Organiza-
tion (PIANGO) Board: Standing Com-
mittee member of the Methodist
Church in Fiji, Director of Veiqaravi
Ecumenical Community Training Cen-
tre; Vice President – Fiji Council of
Social Services (FCOSS); Chair of the
FCOSS Micro Finance Unit Board;
member of the National Financial
Inclusion Task Force and Vice Chair
of the National People’s Charter Ad-
visory Council She also has an Educa-
tor and Theologian, who holds an MA
in Education and a Master in Theolo-
gy, MTh.

of a person depends very much on

important role in the developing of
your Faith, she even shared how not
only was her family a part of her faith
upbringing but also the Christians
school she attends from the pre-
schools, primary until secondary schools
with each if this stories she connects
them with the theme. Mrs. Tevi shares
that “As a follower or a child of God it is
important that we always give Thanks and
Praises to the Lord for our everyday
lives”.
Every Monday morning when she
goes to school, the class teacher would
ask her students “Did you attend Sunday
school yesterday (Sunday)?’ also when they
prepare themselves for Palm Sunday her
school teacher would come to the village
and help in the preparation. With her
school teacher involvement with the chil-
dren especially for church activities it has
help develop students that not only they
learn but their Faith in church but also in
the school. Preschool education as well as
Christian Education aims to nurture com-
munities in having the knowledge and un-
derstanding of the Trinity, to have person-
al experience and counter with Jesus
Christ and accepting him as one Personal
Savior and Lord that’s why we need to
start nurturing the younger generations
start from preschool levels and going up.
It is relevant to learn through your
Faith Journey she says that “Learning is the
one that helps changers the persons be-
havior because it changers attitude, to be a
more responsible and faithful person, Edu-
cation is very important today, but educa-
tion or learning that helps you to be a
better citizen and a member of the
church”.

WWF-Pacific is calling on all its partners to
work towards strengthening partnerships
through effective leadership by promoting
sustainable Fisheries for Fiji.
The call was made at a prayer breakfast
held to commemorate World Fisheries Day
at Epworth Hall in Suva.
In delivering his key note address, the
Secretary General of the Methodist Church
INFiji , Reverend Dr Epineri Vakadewavosa
said today’s celebration was an important
chapter reminding all individuals of their
responsibility in caring for the earth and its
natural resources.
“The Methodist Church of Fiji and Ro-
tuma strongly acknowledges the important
ecological, economical , social, cultural and
traditional value of the ocean and all its
resources to the people of Fiji.`
“We strongly recognize the important
role that the Fisheries sector plays in food
and protein security by eliminating poverty
eradication.”
The observance of World Fisheries day
by the Methodist Church is to raise aware-
ness to its members and the public on the
importance of the serious threats of over-
fishing to marine and freshwater resources.
It also highlights the months of preparation
and planning undertaken by the Environ-
mental Sustainable committee whose task
revolved around the Methodist Church

The recent WWF Reviving Melane-
sia’s Ocean Economy report highlighted
the need for urgent action to safeguard
Melanesia’s oceans marine resources in
the face of climate change, pollution and
sea level raise.
WWF’s Sustainable Fisheries Manag-
er, Mr Francis Areki said the observance
of World Fisheries day was a meaningful
celebration that strengthened the rela-
tionship between a conservation body
and spiritual leaders in making that con-
nection between nature and our relation-
ship with earth.

World Fisheries Day is celebrated each year on No-
vember 21st to help highlight the importance of fisheries to
our communities and the economy.
WWF-Pacific NZAID Project Manager Mr Francis
Areki says fisheries plays a central role in the lives of many
communities.
“In terms of the national overview, fisheries is classified
as the third largest primary sector and it contributes to 2.8
per cent of Fiji’s GDP, generating 9 per cent of total do-
mestic exports,”
“When we consider subsistence fisheries which is usu-
ally not accounted for in the economics of the economy,
80 per cent of the economy directly depends on subsist-
ence fisheries for their food and it employs roughly an
estimated 50, 000 people across Fiji, primarily from the
rural communities, this actually shows quite substantially,
the importance of effectively managing i-qoliqoli’s
(traditional fishing grounds),” he said.
Areki highlighted that in terms of sustainability WWF’s
primary target area is the qoliqoli cokovata (traditional
fishing grounds) in Macuata, where WWF works with the
communities of Sasa, Mali and Naduri to better manage
their marine resources and demonstrate that the fish that
they actually catch out of their qoliqoli can be done in a
sustainable way.
IQOLIQOLI COKOVATA BANS KASAL A F ISHING FOR 1 YEAR
F ishing communities from the
iQoliqoli Cokovata (iQC), Macuata
have decided to work towards
placing a ban on a fish species for a
year to improve depleting fish stocks.
The iQoliqoli Cokovata which consists
of the districts of Macuata, Dreketi, Sasa
and Mali have chosen to trial the fish spe-
cies Camouflage Grouper locally known as
‘Kasala’.
“During my dad’s time, they use to
catch saqa (giant trevally) weighing around
50 kilograms, nowadays it is a totally differ-
ent story, we can see the difference in the
past years and compare it to the present
”said Josetaki Manatua of Raviravi village.
At a recent information sharing, fisher-
ies management workshop held in Naduri,
Macuata; 37 participants were presented
with the results of the Length Based –
Spawning per Recruit (LB-SPR) ratio sur-
vey which was conducted within the com-
munities surrounding iQC.
Piloted in Macuata, the survey saw 12
villages collected data between November
2014 to January 2016.
The survey takes into account the
replacement level or spawning potential of
a particular fish species to determine its
current population status, whether it is
healthy and abundant or in decline and in
urgent need of a temporary ban to allow it
to recover.
WWF–Pacific Coastal Fisheries Officer,
Laitia Tamata Jnr. said results of the analy-
sis conducted by the villages highlighted
that of the 5,225 fish species sampled and
examined, results showed that the Spawn-
ing Per Recruit (SPR) ratio calculated for
five commercially targeted species were 18
per cent for Squaretail Coral Grouper, 11
per cent for Camouflage Grouper (Kasala),
26 per cent for Surf Parrotfish (Ulavi/
Rawarawa), 31 per cent for Unicorn Fish
(Ta/Lele) and 52 per cent for Humpback
Snapper (Taea/Rosinibogi).
He added that scientifically, the
spawning ratio levels for fish should be at
30 per cent or more in order for a partic-
ular fish species to be considered in
healthy numbers for continued harvest.
“We have been given a very compre-
hensive and detailed report of what is out
there in our iQoliqoli Cokavata regarding
fish species such as Kasala or Rawarawa
and it is a first for us, the community to
really know the state of our fishing
grounds, these types of fish species per-
T he observance of World Fisheries Day in Fiji
sheds light on the increasing pressure placed on
ocean assets and the need for stakeholders to
work towards sustainable fisheries in Fiji.
With Fiji, a signatory to a number of international
agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversi-
ty (CBD), the Convention on International Trade on En-
dangered Species on Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) and
the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, greater
awareness and strengthened commitment are needed.
WWF-Pacific Policy Officer Alfred Ralifo says it is
important for everyone to understand these conventions
which are translated into national targets.
“These play a key role in fostering local actions and
international cooperation which are needed to achieve
goals.”
Ralifo added that community support, leadership
across and between the public and private sectors are
needed to rebuild the habitats that support fisheries for
essential food and income.
“These agreements are not solely for government but
for everyone inclusive of CSO’s, communities and the
private sector to understand and implement.”
“The SDG’s are further strengthened by the Aichi
Biodiversity targets which focus on reducing direct pres-

He added that WWF’s partnership with the Methodist
Church has strengthened over the months since the
Church has a strategic pillar that focuses on Environmental
Stewardship.
“One of the critical areas that we want to work with
the Methodist Church is in terms of communication to the
community that each person has a role as a Christian to
be custodians of the planet and we have an inherent re-
sponsibility to maintain and sustain Gods creation, so
that’s the message that we want to promote in our com-
munities,” he said.
Sustainable Fisheries is linked to Sustainable Develop-
ment Goal (SDG) 14 which is (conserve and sustainably
use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable
development) linked to SDG 1 (End poverty in all forms
everywhere) and SDG 2: (End Hunger, achieve food secu-
rity and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agri-
culture).

Fisheries expert and founder of the LB-
SPR survey Dr. Jeremy Prince says the sur-
vey puts a positive spin on fisheries man-
agement in Fiji.
“We will be able to make recommenda-
tions to government, so that we set the
size limits for fish to complete the mini-
mum amount of spawning necessary, before
people are allowed to fish them. That infor-
mation is already of great interest to the
Fisheries Department,” Dr. Prince said.
WWF-Pacific is working with the Minis-
try of Fisheries in replicating this data col-
lection survey throughout the four divi-
sions.
“Focusing on one fish species is good;
this is achievable as a community because
some of the poachers come from the com-
munities,” said Iva Meo, officer in charge of
the Ministry of Fisheries, Northern Divi-
sion.
During the workshop, the communities
of iQoliqoli Cokovata had agreed to ban
the fishing of Kasala beginning 2017, this is
expected to take place after discussions
with stakeholders such as the communities
of iQoliqoli Cokovata, the Ministry of Fish-
eries and WWF-Pacific on the need to
update the minimum size limits for inshore
reef fish species and the current licensing
conditions.
The results shared was enabled through
funding provided by NZAID and supported
through the David and Lucille Packard
Foundation which aims at demonstrating
effective governance and management ap-
proaches for inshore fisheries in Fiji
through collaborative national and commu-
nity driven partnerships.

TAPPOO EXPRESSES GRATITUDE TO METHOD-
IST CHURCH ’S HOLISTIC EDUCATION FOCUS
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT : FAITH IN THE KEY OF “C”

T oday, with a standardised curriculum from the
Fijian government, we are challenged to find
spaces in which to provide the spiritual nur-
turing which forms the cornerstone of the
moral values of which society is in much need of today.
There is also the challenge of the balancing of academic
pursuits with sports and the visual and performing arts
and technical or vocational skills.
Historically, the Methodist Church in Fiji has a been a
pioneer in holistic education. While academic studies is
the primary activity, the church’s focus was on moulding
the complete individual, who then contributes positively
to society. In our understanding – each person, living in
a right relationship with God and neighbour, is what
makes the world a better place, because that is how the
Kingdom of God is manifested.
At the Sigatoka Methodist College prize-giving ceremony
this year, the College invited a former student, former
parent and now current grandparent of a student, Mr.
Kanti Tappoo to be their chief guest. Four generations
that the Tappoo family has been going to Sigatoka
Methodist Primary School and Sigatoka Methodist Col-
lege.
Mr. Tappoo shared a reflection on how since 1953 the
holistic education played an important role in his per-
sonal growth - holistic education that included Christian
religious education.
Below are excerpts of Mr. Tappoo’s speech:
“There are lots of memories of this place for me. But the
most significant of all have no doubt been the great in-
terest with which we used to go to Sunday Schools.”
“I so vividly recall our Sunday school teachers and one in
particular Rev. Edward Caleb who some of the older
teachers may know, is an absolute saintly human. Padri
Caleb used to tell us stories about Jesus. Just as Jesus
used to tell parables, he used to teach us hymns. And
those stories and hymns used to delight us and has
taught me lessons that I hold very strongly to this day. I
owe my deep gratitude to this man to this very day and
whenever I have an opportunity to catch up with him
when he visits Fiji, I would do that with great reverence.
Rev Caleb has lost his
hearing completely but
that has not deterred
him from continuing his
ministry for Christ when-
ever he is asked to. He is
in his 90s now.”
“I owe also a great grati-
tude to my parents in
those days. Although of
very staunch Hindu be-
liefs, they did not object
at all to us going for our
Sunday School Church
classes. My father was a
very strong follower of
Gandhi. I'm sure most of
you senior students would
have heard of Mahatma Gandhi and his teachings
and you will have noticed that he must have been a
devotee of Christ in his own way.”
“Methodist School Sigatoka then was just a primary
school and the High School started in 1982. In my
time in early 60’s, there were no secondary schools
in Sigatoka. I managed to go to Natabua High School
at Lautoka. Most of the town folk sent their children
to this School and to this day that trend has contin-
ued. This school has been a remarkable example of
multi-ethnic, multi-cultural Fiji.”
“I want to pay tribute to Methodist Church of Fiji for
their immense contribution to education in Fiji and
through this school to the people of Sigatoka.”
“Also a tribute is in order to the Government and
education department of Fiji for the various initia-
tives they have undertaken towards education in Fiji.
Free education, assistance in transport, etc. to en-
sure that no eligible child in Fiji is deprived of educa-
tion. Their goal “educated and smarter Fiji” is to be
applauded and supported. The recent re-
introduction of the examination system is particular-
ly commendable in view of the fact that we now live
in a competitive world. This system encourages stu-
dents to strive for the best that education can offer.”
“I must also advise that university education
should not be the only aim. One must pursue
the career of one’s heart. If it is of any comfort
to know, I never went through to university
after High School, as the circumstances did not
allow me to do so.”
“Students, today is a very special day, a day
when some of you will be rewarded and recog-
nized for your hard work, diligence and apti-
tude to school work. To you my hearty congrat-
ulations. Hard work has its own rewards.”
“Some of you may have just missed the mark of
attaining a prize today. To you I say do not des-
pair. It wasn't for a lack of trying. There will be
another day so long as you do not give up. Just
missing the cut off should not be taken as a
sign of failure but merely a slight hiccup. An
opportunity to gather a second breath and sol-
dier on.”
“To some very few who may have given up
even trying, remember the good Lord blesses
us with very different gifts. You remain very
special to Him and never give up utilizing that
gift of Him.”

The singing of the hymn should be a
great experience for Christians. A hymn can be a
prayer, a testimony, praise or an invitation to others to others.
Many of us; apparently don’t take the words we sing very seri-
ously. We sing ‘Sweet Hour of Prayer’ and only pray a few
minutes each day. We sing ‘Onward Christian Soldiers” and
wait to be drafted.
We sing “Oh for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” and don’t
have use one we have to speak for Christ.
We sing “blest be the Tie” and let the slightest offence
sever it.
We sing “I Love o Tell The Story” and seldom mention
Jesus to any and anybody. We sing “Serve The Lord” with
gladness and gripe about all we have to do.
We sing “Cast Your Burden on the Lord” and then woory
ourselves in to nervous breakdown.
We sing the “The whole wide word for Jesus”
and never invite our next door neighbor to church.
Please ponder on what you sing.. for choirs and
singers.
