DEFINITION
Poverty is a concept which refers to people who don’t have the necessary things for living.
A poor person is someone who doesn’t receive enough money to live (fewer than 60% of the average income)
Living in a place where there is a lot of vandalism and criminality determines poverty.
POVERTY IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES
Third world countries are those which are undeveloped.
Their GDP is very low because their economy is based on agriculture.
They have a high index of illiteracy. Economical and political deficiency.
There are a lot of causes, but the most important ones are: A low capital Unemployment

RISK GROUPS
Risk groups are groups of people who haven’t got enough money to survive or to cover their basic needs (food, a house, etc.)
IN SPAIN…
17% of people can’t have access to basic services.
8 million people are poor. 4 out of 10 are under 25 years old. The most important reason is the
increase of unemployment. Young people usually live at home with their parents or in poor conditions because they can’t find a job.
IN CATALONIA…

people. 1 out of 3 women
over 64. 1 out of 4 children Immigrants without
papers. Unemployed people
NGOS
‘’Ayuda en acción’’ (Help in action) It’s a Spanish organization. They fight against poverty. Since 1981
they work to improve the life conditions in the third world countries and they usually do some campaigns (to raise public awareness)
‘’Educación sin fronteras ‘’ (Education without borders) It’s from Barcelona. They fight for education. They think children
have to have a good education. Nowadays they work in South America (Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador...)
‘’ Payasos sin fronteras’’ (Clowns without borders) It’s a Spanish international organization. It was founded in 1993 in
Barcelona. They go to countries where there are conflicts and their labour is to make people laugh. It usually helps to forget problems...
We also find other international NGOs, for example Spanish Red Cross, Pangea, Doctors without Borders... but they aren’t from Spain.
IN TERRASSA (OUR COUNTRY)
Fundació Busquets (Busquets Foundation):
This foundatinon was created by Salvador Busquets in 1901.
At the beginning, the foundation was a place where women could let their children while they were working in the factory.
In1903, Salvador left his inheritance to some nuns. Nowadays the foundation is a place where poor people can access to:
Education and home for children. Communitary showers A dining room. Clothes and toys.
