Spring is in the air. And so is our optimism for the New Year. I know 2009 was another difficult year for all of us. The economy has certainly taken its toll on our industry, but like they say, ‘what doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger’. I feel that we all are most certainly stronger. The economy may not be back to its former stable condition, but it is getting stronger. We too, as pro-fessionals, must become stronger as well. We are the forerunners of our industry and I assure you, we have quite the reputation to live up to for all we have done, especially during the trying times of 2009.

Dear Members,

I must say that I am extremely proud of all of you. Despite these difficult times, we have been able to come together for noble causes.

I am sure all of you remember the tragic earthquakes in Haiti. Person-ally, I cannot stomach the thought of people, especially children suffering. I knew that I had to help these poor people in some way.

I was approached by Paul Nicaj, Owner of Battery Gardens Restaurant, who shared my sentiment and offered his establishment free of charge so that the Food & Beverage Association could hold a fundraiser for Haiti. I was in tears, I was so happy.

I remember I was extremely worried about this fundraiser. I had a goal of $10,000.00, but realistically I knew that with the economy the way it is currently, that it would be difficult- if not impossible- to reach that goal, even with the Association matching the donated amount.

The night of the fundraiser I cried again. So many of you, despite finan-cial difficulties, despite the daily stresses of your own life, despite all odds, came to this fundraiser and of-fered your support for the people of Haiti, people we have never even met.

The turnout was unbelievable; I was honestly in shock the entire night. I was so worried about my goal, and now it was obvious that my fears were completely unfounded. We made our fundraising goal, and it is because of all of YOU.

I’ll never forget the pride I felt when I handed Elizabeth Portland from the American Red Cross the check for $10,000.00. It was at that point that I knew we had done an outstanding service to our friends in Haiti.

We have come to rely on each other whether it is for personal affairs, busi-ness affairs, or in this case, for friends we have never even met.

I cannot express how lucky I am to know all of you. You turned my dream into a reality!

On behalf of the people of Haiti and the Food & Beverage Associa-tion….Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

The Food and Beverage Scholarship Foundation Awards Dinner 2009

On October 9th, 2009, Gladys Mouton Di Stefano received an award from the Chil-dren’s Aid Society, recognizing her 18 years of service to the community. In those 18 years, her thoughtfulness has reached over 300 thousand families on Thanksgiving.

Traditionally Thanksgiving is a holiday in which we give thanks for our happi-ness. Gladys and her volunteers have been sharing their own happiness for 18 years, without any incentive other than seeing the smiling faces of the children being served. Even though they are in unfortu-nate circumstances, their spirit and happi-ness knows no boundary. It is for their genuine happiness that Gladys and her vol-unteers work every year on Thanksgiving Day, to see this genuine happiness.

Verbage from the Plaque:The Children’s Aid Society’s Dunlevy Mil-bank Center proudly recognizes Gladys Mouton Di Stefano’s eighteen years of ex-traordinary generosity. You are an invalu-able resource to the Milbank Commu-nity. Your wonderful Thanksgiving meals have warmed the hearts and put smiles on the faces of thousands of children and fami-lies. Our beautifully renovated kitchen is but another example of your steadfast support
