The Benefits of Gibraltar & Category 2 Status
Gibraltar has a lot going for it - stunning scenery, beautiful weather, a unique blend of cultures, location, history, and of course, our infamous Barbary apes!
These are just a few of the qualities that attract visitors to the Rock year after year, and there is no denying we live in a remarkable part of the world. And, as Gibraltar’s reputation blossoms it is also easy to see why companies and wealthy individuals are more than happy to leave their country of origin and relocate here.
Apart from our Mediterranean lifestyle, the potential tax savings offered by Category 2 status have also proven to be a major factor in attracting wealthy individuals to our shores and it’s easy to see why.
The application process itself is also quite a straight-forward affair and the potential benefits include the ability to make full use of Gibraltar’s offshore Finance Centre and the benefits of not having to pay capital gains tax, wealth tax, gift tax or estate duty.
Likewise, neither is remittance of capital or interest earned from foreign banks and building society deposits and dividends arising from companies quoted on a recognized stock exchange.
It is also important to mention that whilst the holding of a Category 2 status permit does not automatically entitle the person to claim citizenship or any social benefit or social security in Gibraltar, the children of the family may attend local schools and enjoy benefits enjoyed by local residents.
So, what are the main requirements for Category 2 status?
Firstly, the applicant must have at least £2 million of net assets, and:
• Must not have been ordinarily resident nor participated in a trade, business or employment in Gibraltar in the 5 years prior to the application;
• either must purchase or rent accommodation in Gibraltar, which is available for his or her (and family’s) exclusive use throughout the year and the accommodation must be of an sufficiently high standard, suitable for the individual’s needs;
• have private medical insurance in place;
• and, generally, the applicant must undertake not to engage in any trade, business or employment in Gibraltar, although the Gibraltar Government have issued guidance on permissible activities.
