THERIGAPROJECTRIGAprojectaims todesignand implementnew irrigation systems based on standardpolyolefin,with new functionalities such asanti-microbial and anti-roots (trifluralinfree), which allow increasing theirfunctionalityuptotheendoftheirshelf-life(upto50%higher)andcontributestowaterconsumption reduction (up to 5% due toless pipe cleaning is required for correctperformance), in comparison with thecurrent systems in the market. The newdevelopedsystemswillbecost-competitive,safer for animals and plants andenvironmentalfriendly.The project will last 2,5 years from01/07/2014 till 31/12/2016 and foreseesthe participation of 6 European partnersfromItaly,SpainandBelgium.Outcomes of RIGAproject are addressed topipe and dripper manufacturers,distributors and installers), technicians,farmers, gardeners or greenhouse farmers.Moreover, the new micro-irrigation systemcomponentscouldbeeasily replicated forawide range of sectors such long termfarming,buildingandpipelinetransport.

PROJECTACTIVITIES• Definition of the requirements andproduction of PE masterbatches withsuitable anti-algae and anti-microbialadditives;

• Production of pipes and drips withinnovative properties at pilot andindustriallevel;

• Validation of pipes and drips in fieldcondition through dedicateddemonstrativetrials;

• Setupofguidelines for thecultivationofvegetable and ornamental crops thatenvisage the adoption of the innovativemicro-irrigationpipesanddrips;

• Quantification of the environmental andeconomical impact deriving from theadoption of the innovative pipes anddripsalsothroughL.C.A.studies;

• Study of the environmental benefitsderiving from the adoptionof innovativematerials for irrigations such as thereduction of plastic wastes and waterconsumption,thedecreaseofgreenhousegas emission, the removal of toxiccompundsfromwaterbodies;

• Drafting of a business and exploitationplan regarding the innovative micro-irrigationpipesanddripsdeveloped;

• Set up and implementation of wide andappropriate dissemination activitiesaddressed to the most relevantstakeholders.
