Brother Charles Crouzet was a founding Christian Brother at Saint Paul’s School in
1918. He was a consummate educator: gentle, kind, totally committed to his students,
innovative in approach and methodology, deeply spiritual and very humble. He was not
one to draw attention to himself, but quietly went about his work, always striving to
improve things, always working for the good of his students, always reliable and
professional.
Brother Richard Kovatch certainly emulates the best qualities of Brother Charles. He
spends inordinate amounts of time (including many weekends and holidays) correcting
papers and preparing creative and enjoyable lessons, he employs a variety of teaching
techniques, he looks for every opportunity to affirm and praise his students, he willingly
helps former students with their college English papers, and he wholeheartedly embraces
the Lasallian Mission – so much so, that he has devoted his life as a Brother of the
Christian Schools.
His long and distinguished career as a Christian Brother has seen him in administrative roles at
several of our schools as well as serving the Brothers as an Assistant Provincial. Following his
administrative career, he came to Saint Paul’s over twelve years ago to teach English – his first
love. And over the years, he has done so competently and effectively, earning the respect of his
students and admiration of his colleagues. He is a living definition of the term “positive work ethic.”
He exemplifies commitment to Saint Paul’s School – as did Brother Charles Crouzet.
Brother Rich does not lead by words, but by example. Like Brother Charles Crouzet, he is a real
minister of grace, touching the hearts of his students, just as Saint John Baptist de La Salle wanted his
teachers to do. His hard work, caring and professionalism have made him a model worthy of imitation
by the rest of us. We are privileged to have him on our faculty, and the young men entrusted to his care
are blessed to have him as their teacher. by Brother Raymond Bulliard, FSC
President of Saint Paul’s School
