The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll &Mr HydeLantern TheatreROBeRT louis Stevenson’s story hasalways been larger than life, in thesense it is one man’s mission to un-leash the mind’s ‘other’ personality.
In director Nick lane’s adaptation thetale takes on efficient form with the focuson Dr Jekyll’s back story and HullTruck’scanny stage craft to make the scientist’sbattle compelling without frills.
Stevenson’s story may lack the hor-ror factor in a numbed 21st century,but Strange Case weaves a generousjourney into man’s dark side and theimplications for those around.
largely this is down to JamesWeaver’s agile, expressive work as theobsessive doctor and murderous alterego Mr Hyde.Where he is ideal for thejob with his wily physicality and glower-ing transformations from stooped to feralbeing, Joanna Miller matches him fortenderness as love-starved eleanor, thewife of best friend lanyon who cravesthe manliness and danger Hyde entails.John Gully completes the cast as Jekyll’sconcerned pal and lawyer utterson tolend contrast and setting; a barometerof correctness in a Victorian era wherescience was often feared.
