High Speed Internet Access (HSIA) Providers
HSIA providers provide and install the network hardware that make high-speed internet access possible. These include Air2Data High Speed Wireless, Cloud5 Communications, DCI – Design Communications LLC, Deep Blue Communiations, Intello Technologies, ITG Networks, Safety NetAccess and Thinix.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
ISPs provide software and services that allow hotels and guests to access and use the internet. They deliver the “speeds and feeds” critical to delivering dependable wireless connectivity. Examples include Comcast, AT&T and Century Link. They can also take the form of ISP services agents, like TeleDomani, that negotiate service contracts with all providers and provide post-implementation support. Internet service providers may be organized in various forms, such ascommercial, community-owned, non-profit, or otherwise privately owned.
Hotel Entertainment Service Provider
Powered by Wi-Fi, these providers help deliver the quality of guestroom entertainment you offer. This category covers both the technology – like Samsung and LG – as well as the services that provide television, movie, video and interactive content such as DirecTV, HBO and SHOWTIME.
In Pursuit of Reliable Connectivity
Study-after-study shows the quality of the wireless connectivity hotels offer continues to rank high on guests’ must-have list. In a recent study by HBO, 86 percent of guests reported using hotel Wi-Fi and 78 percent rate it as the most important hotel entertainment service. That said, 71 percent of guests who stream content have recurring problems with hotel Wi-Fi connections. And unhappy guests can lead to negative guest satisfaction scores and reviews.
To help you meet this critical guest requirement, Strategic Sourcing continues to evaluate supplier options and negotiate competitive agreements. You’ll find all your options in this guide and online at WHRSourcing.com.
Navigating the wireless provider landscape can be a challenging proposition. To better understand the suppliers for specific technology and services, check out this quick overview provided by Strategic Sourcing:

In hospitality, the concept of guest engagement isn’t new, but has changed dramatically over the last decade. Today, it’s all about the quality of the connectivity you provide and empowering guests to interact with your hotels in new and meaningful ways. Ultimately, the experience you deliver means everything.
“From guest engagement and entertainment to internal operations and hotel services, Wi-Fi enabled devices can take hotels and their guests from check-in to check-out and everything in between,” notes Deep Blue Communication’s Rachel Feurer. “By understanding what applications are on the horizon, what can be done with the right technology and with an eye toward the future of Wi-Fi, hotels can help increase RevPAR by optimizing operations, increasing can use their mobile devices to:
In its most basic form, empowering new levels of engagement requires reliable Wi-Fi connectivity, a smartphone or other mobile device and a loyalty/ rewards application interface. However, given connected devices will outnumber connected people six to one by 2020, it could impact any number of channels in the near future. Connected guests make for happy guests and are more likely to come back and tell others about their experience. Here’s a look at the trends defining hospitality mobile engagement strategies and tips
to operationalize them.
In Pursuit of Reliable Connectivity
With guest expectations for almost constant connectivity growing, ongoing investments in Wi- Fi infrastructure is critical. However, some guest reviews and ratings reveal it remains an issue for many resorts. Getting this right is a fundamental step towards achieving new standards of guest engagement and meeting guests’ minimum expectations. Guests expect a connected experience that is as good as or even better than what they enjoy at home, so they can use their mobile devices to:
• Check email, access corporate and social networks
• Make service requests such as early room cleaning or late check-out
• Make mobile payments at shops or restaurants
• Stream content from TV, movie, or music providers
The traditional focus for enabling high-speed connectivity has centered around the guestroom, with enough secure bandwidth to check and send emails, join online meetings and log-in and post on social networks. However, those boundaries are rapidly expanding to hotel restaurants, public spaces and even poolside.

ENGAGED GUESTS
BYOD Becoming BYOC
Guests are bringing their own devices (BYOD) into hotels seamlessly and securely connect with your networks. But what they want even more than that is access to their own streaming content (BYOC) – such as Netflix movies, Hulu programming, Spotify playlists, Apple TV – on those devices. And that requires a scalable network that’s fine-tuned to accommodate increased demand.
Since most hotels don’t have wireless experts on staff, they often rely on service providers for connectivity, set bandwidth requirements and to handle guest troubleshooting calls. The quality and manageability of your WLAN will require a more dedicated focus by resort staff. With guest connectivity both a top complaint and defining priority, more General Managers may see their compensation tied to their network performance
and guest satisfaction scores.
Increased Demand for Automated, Self-directed Services
Ongoing guest engagement is driven in large part by smartphone loyalty apps. Today, they provide a valuable interface to capture and track guest preferences, book reservations and earn rewards.
The new breed of traveler wants the convenience of booking a room instantly using their smartphones. They like being able to make last-minute reservations from locations such as airports, airplanes or taxis. And they find that automated kiosks in locations ranging from airports to lobbies offer faster, easier check-in. Many also want to use their smartphones as room and minibar keys.
Getting More Engaged
The benefits of adopting a mobile engagement strategy are far reaching. Not only will investing in the right solution help enhance the guest experience, improve satisfaction scores and staff effectiveness, but it can also help increase occupancy rates and revenues whie building brand equity. Imagine how customer service would improve when the right associate responds instantly to a guest’s request for assistance. Reliable connectivity makes new levels of guest engagement possible. Is your network ready?

HSIA TERMINOLOGY Brought to you by Safety NetAccess®
An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is the industry term for the company that is able to provide you with access to the Internet (via Dial-up, Broadband, DSL and now Cable). If you hear someone talking about the Internet and they mention their “provider,” they’re usually talking about their ISP.
In the 1990s, there were three types of ISPs: dial-up services, high-speed Internet (also referred to as “broadband”) offered by cable companies, and Digital Subscribers Line (DSL) offered by phone companies. By 2013, dial-up services were rare (even though they were cheap), because they were very slow...and the other ISP options were typically readily available and much, much faster.
Two of the leading DSL ISPs have been Verizon and AT&T. Since 2013, DSL has been on the decline, while cable-based ISPs, like Comcast and Time Warner, have been growing. Here at Wyndham Hotels & Resorts , hotels are required to use a business grade ISP. Look up TeleDomani Inc. to review the full line up of ISP options that might be available for your specific location at http://teledomani.com/providers/.
Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are required to provide your hotel with a minimum bandwidth level, measured in Megabits per Second (Mbps). Refer to your Brand Standards to identify your Brand’s minimum bandwidth requirement.
A gateway is a hardware device that acts as a “gate” between two networks (for example your ISP’s network feed into your hotel and your hotel’s own internal network). It may be a router, firewall, server, or other device that enables traffic to flow in and out of the network.
Decibels (dBm) is a measurement of signal strength. The industry standard for a robust wireless connection is a signal strength of -65dBm. The closer the number to zero, the stronger the signal is: -55dBm is better than –75dBm.
Megabytes (MB) are often used to measure the size of large files. For example, a high resolution JPEG image file might range in size from one to five MB. Uncompressed raw images from a digital camera may be 10 to 50 .
Gigabytes (GB) are often used to measure storage capacity. For example, a standard DVD can hold 4.7 GB of data and a hard drive may have a storage capacity of 750 GB. One GB is equal to 1,000 MB.
Megabits (Mb) are commonly used to measure high-speed or “broadband” Internet connections. For example, an ISP may offer cable modem Internet access with download speeds up to 60 megabits per second (Mbps ) and upload speeds up to 10 Mbps.
Megabits per second (Mbps) is used to measure data transfer speeds of high bandwidth connections, such as Ethernet and cable modems.
Gigabits per second (Gbps) is commonly used to measure data transfer speeds between hardware devices. Modern hardware interfaces can now transfer data over one Gbps, which makes Gbps a necessary unit of measurement.
Gigahertz (GHz) is the measurement of the frequency bands used in wireless networking - 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. At the same signal strength, a 5 GHz network can carry significantly more data than a 2.4 GHz network while causing much less interference and is now the industry standard. However the range of a 5 GHz access point is often shorter and more prone to propagation loss through obstacles.
Category 5, 5e, and 6 cable is a standardized twisted pair cable for Ethernet and other network physical layers that is backward compatible with the Category 5/5e and Category 3 cable standards.

802.11ac (also called 5G Wi-Fi) is the fifth generation of Wi-Fi technology, standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). It is an evolution of the previous standard, 802.11n, that provides greater bandwidth and more simultaneous spatial streams (separately encoded data signals). 802.11ac operates exclusively on a 5 GHz frequency band. This prevents interference with common 2.4 GHz devices, such as cordless phones, baby monitors, and older wireless routers. Computers and mobile devices that support 802.11ac will benefit from the 5 GHz bandwidth.
In a wireless local area network (WLAN), an access point is a station that transmits and receives data (sometimes referred to as a transceiver). An access point connects users to other users within the network and can also serve as the point of interconnection between the WLAN and a fixed wire network. Each access point can serve multiple users within a defined network area; as people move beyond the range of one access point, they are automatically handed over to the next one. A small WLAN may only require a single access point; the number required increases as a function of the number of network users and the physical size of the network.
Short for main distribution frame (MDF) and intermediate distribution frame (IDF), these are rooms with an equipment rack that interconnects and manages the telecommunications wiring between itself and any number of IDFs. While there can be multiple IDFs, which connect internal lines to the MDF, there is only one MDF that connects private or public lines coming into a building with the internal network. Smaller properties may only have an MDF that serves both functions.
A switch is used to network multiple devices together in a quick and efficient way by passing data in one port and out another. HSIA networks typically use switches with 8, 24, or 48 ports. These ports can connect to access points, computers, internet routers, and other switches. All of these devices on the network need to be connected to a switch before they can be useful.
A wireless local area network (LAN), WLAN (wireless local area network) or LAWN (local area wireless network) is a network which a mobile user can connect through a wireless (radio) connection. The IEEE 802.11 group of standards specify the technologies for wireless LANs. 802.11 standards use the Ethernet protocol and CSMA/CA (carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance) for path sharing and include an encryption method, the Wired Equivalent Privacy algorithm.

Why You Need a Managed Network Services Provider
From guest services and operations to conference space and poolside dining, the need for a complex, connected and dependable network is critical to the success of any hotel. But without the proper planning, installation and maintenance, your network may be underperforming and not capable of handling the demand that is increasing exponentially by the day.
How Has Technology Advanced in the Hospitality Market
Networks are no longer used only for pay-per-view movies, phone service and wired computer connections. These days, guests check-in and expect seamless services from the minute they enter the property to check-out - and everywhere and every minute in between. Not only do business travelers come armed with an average of three wireless devices, but now leisure and family travelers are well-equipped with smartphones, tablets, eReaders and wearables as well. People want to stream games, shows and movies while wearing a personal fitness device and accessing social media. All at the same time. Multiply this by hundreds of guests and we begin to see where our networks can fail, and where suddenly a bad connection becomes one negative review after another. Excellent connectivity for all technologies is no longer an option - it is a requirement.
But it isn’t just the hotel guests who need reliable connections. Hotel owners and managers are utilizing devices and Location Based Services (LBS) to increase revenues and reward guests with loyalty programs, targeted offers and personalized service - all delivered on a network to their inroom video service, smart phone, email account, social media and e-commerce sites. The back end systems that run hotels rely on
robust networks to keep business booming. For example, by connecting employees via handheld devices, managers can streamline communication so properties can optimize their daily operations and create efficiencies. New software and services are creating the opportunity for sales and guest interactions where none existed before. From security and operations to housekeeping and room service - each element of a guests’ stay and an employee’s day is touched in some way by technology.
How are Networks Advancing to Accommodate the Growth
In the golden olden days of implementing cable TV or a simple phone or computer system, multiple networks were managed by disparate vendors without anyone really looking at the big picture. But there is a growing trend these days towards a more integrated model that enables properties to add new services and functionality in a more cost effective way. Unlike even a few years ago, the hospitality industry is being taxed with understanding and implementing all of the security, technology and network services required to accommodate the proliferation of connected devices.
But when new properties design a network from the ground up or an older property adds network services to accommodate every system in one unified network, the process can be labor intensive - particularly when managing multiple vendors with disparate and often competing technologies.
A growing trend to help achieve the best network with the least amount of cost and hassle is by administering all technology through managed network services. Managed network services providers streamline the entire process of networking, alleviating a great deal

of stress and cost and researching the most efficient grouping of technologies and services to meet your budget and return the best ROI. They manage the overall network design, as well as the implementation of all of the cabling, infrastructure, technology vendors, service contracts, testing and ongoing support for all systems together. By helping you define your technology and network requirements and illustrating how they will work together, you can ensure your network can support current needs, as well as anticipate your growth needs for the next 10-15 years.
Without the help of managed network services, property owners and managers need to intimately understand the inner-workings of a full wired and wireless network, how every technology from the security system to the PMS to in-room entertainment will work, how they will access the network and the implications for performance, as well as deal with multiple vendors, service contracts and implementations. Even with a full IT staff, these responsibilities are taxing, expensive and overwhelming.
How do Managed Network Services Work?
All of these disparate technology systems are interdependent and can all be negatively affected by infrastructure issues, installation delays and technical complications. Projects that are handled with managed network services benefit from working with a team that can see the bigger picture and coordinate the procedures, installations and testing of systems in terms of timing, scheduling and cost management. By providing a single point of contact for all communications with all stakeholders and by utilizing overall network and technology expertise, you now have a translator between each participant.
In the planning phase, certified project managers will help develop the overall network for a property, confirming all technology integrations and costs, scheduling installations and finding the solutions that will work together for the best result. With the expertise to evaluate building layout and construction materials to anticipate any installation difficulties, your network manager can oversee optimal access point placement to ensure consistent coverage and minimize interference.
In the delivery phase, a managed network team will work in conjunction with all vendors in order to incorporate each technology with a phased approach to eliminate timing delays and last minute changes. For example, by helping to onboard each vendor, scheduling services at the right time for the overall project, working at each stage to analyze traffic and optimize network resources you can ensure uptime and capacity requirements are met at every stage. All components like: network configurations, installations or upgrades, hardware and software implementations, security and PMS to integrated voice, data and HSIA implementations are managed simultaneously.
Having oversight of the entire network can also help mitigate internal conflicts and cost overruns by ensuring compatibility of all systems in advance, and testing network performance with each new service to confirm optimal performance and to make adjustments where necessary. Hotels can also rest assured that network specialists have the future in mind when designing and implementing a network by ensuring infrastructure is easily accessible for maintenance and repair, making it easier and more cost effective to add services - regardless of the vendor.

Why You Need a Managed Network Services Provider
As the pace of technology quickens and new devices are released each year, hotels can
no longer rely on traditional network design to accommodate today’s technologies. Each
piece of the puzzle is critical to network security, redundancy, reliability and capacity. With
the right collaboration, insight and planning, hotels can have the best network for all the
technologies, guests, employees and services that rely on it.
Rachel Feurer, National Account Manager for Deep Blue Communications, LLC, an international provider of converged Wi-Fi networks for
hospitality, retail, and large entertainment venues.
It takes a great deal of organization to make sure your property opens on time with all of your technologies working together, the way they should. When looking for a managed network services provider, make sure you are working with a company who offers certified project managers. Certified project managers are professionals who can leverage experience with existing systems and infrastructure and can advise on the best way to integrate both for time and cost savings. They can also facilitate compliance with industry and brand standards. Look for a company that has the agility and flexibility to adapt to changes to improve the guest experience, but the focus to keep you within scope and on schedule. Your vendor should be able to manage all of your network
components and stakeholders for all 3rd party technology services, helping to anticipate issues, reduce costs and streamline all technology operations.
On top of all of that - one of the most important elements is IT services and support. With cloud-based technologies, skilled providers are able to monitor, analyze and fix network issues remotely in real time, ensuring smaller issues don’t become bigger headaches. With 24/7/365 help desk, ISP management, remote monitoring and support that includes all vendors on the network, owners and managers can reduce costs and simplify the upkeep and maintenance of complex systems.

Consumer vs. Commercial TVs
CommercialTelevisions
ConsumerTelevisions
It may be tempting to buy the less expensive consumer televisions for your hotel rooms, but this may end up costing you more in the long run. There are significant differences between consumer TVs offered through discount retailers and the brand-specified
commercial-grade units negotiated by Strategic Sourcing. Learn how a Samsung commercial TV can better help your hotel operations while keeping your guests well-entertained.

Embedded MPEG Technology to Minimize Cost
Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is a
compression format that allows digital information
to take up less space on a device or during
transmission. This format compresses digital video
and is commonly used to compress HD signals for
satellite and hotel systems.
Pre-set Hospitality Settings Make for Simple & Easy Installation
Through advanced plug-and-play settings, hotel
staff can activate hundreds of in-room displays with
minimal effort. Operations teams simply have to
navigate three basic launch settings to synchronize
multiple displays while also defining connectivity
and language needs. More importantly, commercial
TVs offer lockable features to prevent guests from
tampering with the settings.
No MPEG-4 Built-In Could Mean Requiring More Hardware
Consumer TVs do not come with MPEG-4 built-in
which means receiving HD signals could be costly
as satellite providers require more hardware in each
guestroom and/or at hotel’s head-end.
Lack of security and control over the in-room TV
Consumer TVs lack the ability to lock-out guests
from altering the TV settings. All Samsung
commercial TVs come with lockout controls and
volume limiters to prevent guests from causing any
disruptions to your day-to-day business.

Treat Your Guests with the Modern Tech Comforts They Get at Home
Today’s consumers expect a differentiated luxurious experience that offers the same comfort and convenience they enjoy at home. Smartphones, tablets, and laptops create real competition for paid and promotional content usually carried over hotel in-room entertainment. This eats into potential revenue streams and lowers overall customer satisfaction when your hotel entertainment experiences can’t compete with what is in their bags much less what they have at home.
Fortunately, there is a growing range of hospitality TV solutions that can meet guests’ expectations and provide a competitive advantages for the hotels willing to make the right investments. These solutions can transform the in-room TV screens into digital concierges for versatile customer
engagement.
Personalized Full-stay Service for Your Guests
A centralized content management platform can facilitate two-way communication with the in-room screen to provide a personalized stay for your guest. Enhanced features include a tailored welcome message, weather or flight info, express check-out and folio review options. The better the communication with your guests, the better the guest experience.
Samsung, our preferred supplier for televisions, can provide all the benefits of a content management platform across all types of infrastructures (including coaxial) with Samsung LYNK™ REACH 4.0.

Leveraging our expertise in the hospitality industry, we know what it takes to help guests find their way and enjoy their stay. It all comes down to customization.
Customized SolutionsWe understand that no two Wyndham Hotels & Resorts properties are alike. That’s why we work alongside your team throughout the pre-planning, installation, and deployment process to ensure the hardware, software, and server solutions meet your every need.
Curated ContentOur talented designers create slides and templates that reflect your brand, property décor, and geographic location, and are also easy to adjust and update as needed.
Seamless IntegrationOur content management system provides guests access to:
• Maps and directories • Meeting, event, and conference information • Real-time news, weather, flight data, and more • Lists of on-site or local amenities and vendor advertisements
One CallSupporting your system along the way.Our team supports your hotel staff throughout your digital signage journey – always here to train, maintain, troubleshoot, and expand your digital signage solutions on-site or across other properties.
Targeted TrainingSystem administrators will receive customized training for your digital signage solution. Even after implementation, the JANUS Displays team is always just a call or email away.

Meeting Room DisplaysSay goodbye to printed door cards for your meeting rooms and event spaces. Our technology integrates with most event management systems, displaying real-time meeting information so your guests can easily find where they need to go.
Endless PossibilitiesEngaging your audience.Guests consume digital messages in a variety of ways. Browse signage options and connect with us to recommend the right solution.
DISPLAY OPTIONSDiscover our diverse displays, created to meet your guests’ needs, and free up your staff to assist others.
Concierge Board/Interactive BoardGive guests information at their fingertips with an interactive concierge board. By integrating our software with yours, guests can use this touch screen display to navigate pre-programmed maps and directories. It frees up your front desk staff and cuts costs, because guests can easily find the information they need – from on-site amenities, retail, and restaurants to event schedules, meeting places, flight information, weather forecasts, and more.
DirectoriesWith digital directories, guests can find the information they need to go about their day. Compared to a concierge board, directories are paired with a static screen, so you are always in control of the message guests see. Your staff can schedule messages in advance or on the go, and they’ll receive access to tools, templates, and resources to create and publish visually appealing content for guests.
Video Walls and MoreWhether you’re looking for a digital sign or customized solution, we’ve got you covered. Get in touch with us to discuss your needs.
Wyndham Grand Video Wall
FRAMES AND ENCLOSURES
Wall-MountedFor wall-mounted displays, you can choose between a surface or recessed enclosure to hide your wires and hardware. Surface displays are mounted to the wall, while recessed displays are housed within it. Both options are typically used in hotel common areas, conference spaces, and near elevators.
FreestandingChoose either a pedestal or pulpit display to stand in your lobby, common areas, and conference spaces. Large pedestals are often used for concierge boards and directories, displaying hotel information, amenities, menu offerings, and more. Compared to pulpit signs, you can showcase more information.
Pulpits provide the same capabilities as a pedestal, but on a smaller scale, and typically showcase general hotel or directional information. This option is most mobile because of its size.
Custom FramesWhatever enclosure option you choose, our skilled professionals can design custom frames to complement your décor and showcase your content. You can also use our online design tool to choose from contemporary, modern, or traditional styles.
SPECIAL PROJECTS
Complete CustomizationOur philosophy includes “endless possibilities” for a reason. As an approved digital signage supplier for Wyndham Hotels & Resorts’ properties, our expertise expands beyond this guide. If you have additional questions or needs, let’s connect to see how our team can assist you.
SERVER SOLUTIONChoose between a cloud-based network or on-site server solution to manage your content. A cloud-based solution is hosted virtually over the internet, while an on-site server physically resides on your property. Whatever your preference, our team will work with you to identify the server solution that fits your needs.
