Fort Manoel onManoel Island

Fort Manoel onManoel Island inGzira was built bythe Knights to pro-tect Valletta's north-facing bastionsfrom artillery actionfrom the Isolotto inMarsamxetto Har-bour. The first stonewas laid in 1723,under the patronageof Portuguese GrandMaster Manoel de Vil-hena under the super-vision of world famousengineer Mondion.

Although the fort'sdefining characteristicssurvived the ravages of time, count-less changes were effected overthe years to meet the exigencies ofmilitary strategies. It also endurednumerous direct hits during WorldWar II and was subsequentlydamaged by a combination ofvandalism and neglect.

Manoel Island is an islandfortress inside the oft-namedfortress island of Malta. Thestar shaped fort was originallyconstructed by the Knights ofSt. John in the eighteenth cen-tury to a design by French en-gineer René Jacob de Tigné, asmodified by Charles François de Mondion.

The Fort is currently being restored along with the other fortifications in Val-letta, Sliema and the Three Cities (Bormla, Birgu and Senglea (L-Isla).

From July this year, public transport in Malta has en-tered a new era. The bus company Arriva ceasedoperation in January 2014, and as of October last

year the government chose Autobuses Urbanos de Leónas its preferred bus operator for the country. The com-pany took over the bus service on January 8 his year, while retaining the name Malta Public Transport.

There are a total of 80 different routes that link the dif-ferent localities in Malta to either major hubs such asValletta, Mater Dei Hospital and the Airport or to otherdestinations. Meanwhile, 15 different routes operate inGozo primarily from the central hub of Victoria Bus Sta-tion to various localities on the island.Under the Arriva regime, Maltese citizens residing

overseas, returning to their homeland for a visit, wereregarded as foreigners and were asked to pay a highertoll. Maltese citizens residing abroad protested stronglyagainst such discrimination not because they did notwant to pay higher prices but as a matter of principle. The Malta Government took some notice of their

protests and finally buckled when the mighty EuropeanUnion threatened to take Malta to court. Maltese citizens residing abroad had maintained from

the outset that Maltese-born,with a Maltese passport, vis-iting their homeland shouldnot be pigeonholed withother EU members; showingtheir Maltese passport shouldbe proof enough. The Maltese living abroad

have argued that subsequentGovernments ofMalta keep play-ing the residenceissue completelyforgetting thatbefore migratingmost of the Mal-tese living abroadhad paid theirtaxes and their na-tional insurancecontributions aswell. Other EU citi-zens did not. When the July

2015 changes inpublic transport

came into effect, TheVoice of the Maltese in Australia, the bi-weekly magazinewith the largest circulation of any similar publication, took up the issue of fares particularly about how conces-sions were being applied and circulated it to some of thereaders and others, seeking their opinions.Malta Transport made it known that the KARTANZ-

JAN (60+) is gradually being phased out (the physicalcard) and is being incorporated into the Maltese IdentityCard (with micro) with 60+ and 75+ indicated on thesame identity card. Therefore, any new applications forthe KARTANZJAN are tied to an identity card that iseventually required to obtain a Tallinja card +60. MT states that to obtain a Maltese identity card, one

must have the residency requirement in accordance withMalta’s Constitution. Transport Malta further explainedthat no other form or identity can be used, for example aMaltese passport, since if the concession is given to Mal-

tese living abroad thenby EU law the conces-sion must be given toall EU citizens visitingMalta which amount toslightly less than a mil-lion annually. MT argues that this

situation would renderthe Malta Public Trans-port unsustainable.

Furthermore, if a Maltese is visiting Malta for a holidayand would be using Malta Public Transport regularly, itwould be more advantageous to purchase an ExplorerCard at €21 per week unlimited travel or a 12-journeyCard costing €15.It is to be noted that persons not residing in Malta are

eligible to apply for the said card and have it deliveredto their home address irrespective of the country of resi-dence.

Further note that cards delivered outside Malta wouldneed to pay postal charges.Without delving deeper into this issue, we would like

So, now MalteseLiving abroad areseen as an economicburden to Malta. What about the

enormous sums of money migrantsremitted to Malta in years gone by

for many years? This was not seen as aburden then but was an invisible income that sustained manyfamilies. This concern was expressed in the 2000 Convention by

French-speaking Maltese who objected to being classified asforeigners on arrival in Malta, in their disembarkation cardsat the airport, as they saw themselves coming to their ances-tral home. They were not tourists in the strict sense of the word, but

visited Malta with distant family ties.If dual citizenship has to have true full meaning, then com-

paring us to EU citizens, in my view, does not hold water. You are either Maltese or you are an EU citizen. This matter needs to be taken up jointly by the MCC of

NSW and Victoria; the same way the issues with SBS is beingaddressed.Indeed, let us have more comments.

Following elicitation of the most populartraits, we proceeded with two surveys inMalta (N=336) and in Australia (N=140),asking respondents to rate the extent towhich they thought each trait characterisedthe Maltese on a 7-point Likert scale. Thesurvey was administered to Maltese inMalta on the one hand, and to Maltese mi-grants to Australia on the other, up to thirdgeneration immigrants.

We also asked the Maltese in Malta torate Europeans on the same traits, and theMaltese in Australia to rate both Aus-tralians and Europeans alongside the Mal-tese.For the Maltese in Malta, every trait pre-

sented except for laziness received ahigher rating than the neutral midpoint ofthe scale. This means that all traits pre-sented were deemed representative of theMaltese except for laziness.

Relative to the Europeans, the Malteserate themselves more positively on everypositive trait, and more negatively onevery negative trait. In general, the Mal-tese in Malta thus hold themselves to bebetter than the Europeans in various re-spects, and worse than the Europeans invarious other respects. However, relative to Europeans, the Mal-

tese rated themselves much more harshlyon negative traits than positive traits.

Consequently, the positive typicality ofthe Maltese in Malta (5.14) stands onlyslightly higher than the negative typicality(4.84), with a self-stereotype identity ratioof 1.06. Maltese identity amongst the Mal-tese in Malta is thus marginally positive.

For the Europeans, however, positivetypicality (4.27) stands rather higher thannegative typicality (3.63), with a relativelyhigher self-stereotype ratio of 1.18. Over-all, therefore, the Maltese in Malta holdEuropeans in higher esteem than they dothemselves (Table 2).

For the Maltese in Australia, the Malteseare better than both Australians and Euro-peans on every positive trait. They are alsoworse than both Australians and Europeanson four out of the eight negative traits (Jeal-ous, Stubborn, Impatient, Gossipy).

Unlike the Maltese in Malta, however, the Maltese in Australia consider the Mal-tese to be less Indulgent, Competitive andShifty than both Australians and Euro-peans, and as Blasphemous as Australians, although more so than Europeans.

Consequently, the Maltese in Australiapresent a higher positive typicality thanthe Maltese in Malta (5.95) and a lowernegative typicality (4.69), with a self-stereotype ratio of 1.27. The positive typ-icality for Australians (4.46) andEuropeans (4.84) amongst the Maltese inAustralia is lower than that for the Mal-tese. And whilst the negative typicality for

both these othergroups is alsolower than that ofthe Maltese (Aus-tralians: 4.26; Eu-ropeans: 4.47),the self-stereotyperatio for thesegroups stand at1.08 for Europeans and 1.05 for Aus-tralians (Table 2).

To sum this up, the Maltese in Australiaperceive Australians, Europeans and theMaltese in positive esteem. Unlike theMaltese in Malta, however, they hold theirown group in higher esteem overall thanthey do Europeans and Australians in turn.

DiscussionThere are three issues that emerge fromthese findings that I believe warrant someconsideration. Firstly, the Maltese in Maltaseemingly demonstrate an ambivalent iden-tity. Their self-stereotype ratio is onlyslightly positive.

Overall, considering both the positive andnegative aspects of Maltese identity, theMaltese in Malta are almost neutral in the es-teem by which they hold themselves. Rela-tive to Europeans, the Maltese in Mal-tademonstrate both superiority in positivetraits and inferiority in negative ones, butthey clearly hold themselves in less esteemthan they do their European counterparts. This situation may well serve as an inclina-

tion towards European assimilation ratherthan integration (Sammut, 2011), by whicha more positive identity is negotiated by theMaltese in European terms, at the expense ofcertain features that are typically Maltese.Secondly, the Maltese in Australia demon-

strate a stronger sense of self-worth than theMaltese in Malta. A factor for this might bedue to nostalgia that migrants may experi-ence when away from their homeland. Onthe other hand, it may also be the case thatthose Maltese who hold themselves in highesteem relative to other nationalities are un-deterred by the challenges of migration andare thus more prone to seek better opportu-nities overseas than the ones who are notquite so convinced about their overall po-tential.

Finally, and arguably most importantly, the relative stereotype ratios demonstratedby the Maltese in Australia represent an

ideal intercultural relations scenario. TheMaltese in Australia hold both Australiansand Europeans in positive esteem, whichmeans that, as a community, they are opento establish ties with both groups.

This sets the stage for the generation ofbridging social capital, that is, establishextra-community ties to fulfil their own in-

terests. However, in the caseof the Maltese in Australia, this does not come at the ex-pense of intra-communityties. The Maltese in Australiahold their own group in evenhigher esteem, which sets thestage for the generation ofbonding social capital.

As a community that canfoster both bonding andbridging social capital (Sam-

mut, Andreouli & Sartawi, 2012), the Mal-tese in Australia demonstrate an idealintegrationist acculturation strategy thatpresents a win/win situation for themselvesand their host country (Sammut, 2011). Achieving successful intercultural integra-

tion remains a ubiquitous challenge in con-temporary societies worldwide, includingMalta. This is especially the case given thesocio-political changes Malta has witnessedover the past decade. Yet, this challenge may not be insurmount-

able after all. The study of Maltese migrantcommunities worldwide may well help usidentify the ingredients that pave the way topositive intercultural contact.ReferencesGiddens, A. (1991). Tourism: very positive trends observed I

nbound tourism statistics for June2015 published by the National Sta-tistics Office indicated an increase of

4.5% in the number of tourists visitingMalta compared to June last year. Itreached 187,617. At the same time, ex-penditure by tourists during the samemonth peaked at an impressive €165.2million featuring an incremental spendof €4.4 million over the same month lastyear.

The number of nights stayed bytourists increased marginally to reachthe 1.36 million mark. The number oftourists staying in hotel-type collectiveaccommodation, which hosted three outof every four tourists during June in-creased marginally to reach 134,799while those staying in private accommo-dation grew by almost 5,000 or 11.3%.

This positive trend has also been ob-served during July and the first days ofAugust, with Malta Tourism Authority(MTA) CEO Paul Bugeja saying that in-dications are, that hotels are also quitestrong in their booking forecast for Sep-tember.

According to him, the main challengeto keep Malta’s product going is to en-sure keeping it continuously refreshed, innovative and active all year round. Healso called for more coordination be-tween all stakeholders

“Synergies among all stakeholders ne-ed to be strengthened more, including

better coordination within all govern-ment entities and authorities to ensurethe objectives are met.“The main objective is to diversify and

extend the season throughout the wintermonths,” he said. When it comes to Gozo, during August

demand has been exceeding supply inall types of accommodation, with GozoTourism Association CEO Joe Muscatconfirming that the accommodation sec-tor featuring both the hotels and farm-houses is very busy during August.

“It is customary for an island destina-tion like Gozo to have the month of Au-gust featuring as the busiest period ofthe whole summer season. More oftenthan not during this month, the demandexceeds the supply in all types of accom-modation,” he said.

NSO statistics covering the month ofMay showed that the Gozitan hotels andguesthouses registered an increase of8.8% in arrivals and a 13.4% increase inbed nights. For the period January toMay the collective accommodation onGozo registered a cumulative drop of5% in arrivals and 2.8% in bed nights.Mr Muscat explained the decrease dur-

ing January and February was due to thefact the two five-star hotels in Gozowere closed for refurbishment.

But the drops in the first two monthswere partially made up for by the in-creases registered in the March - Mayperiod.

He said that Gozo is also managing toattract smaller and more exclusive cruiseships that berth off Mgarr harbour for anumber of hours, and in fact, 23 cruiseships are scheduled to visit and berth offGozo during the current year.

Mr Muscat the improvement of theGozitan tourism product is an ongoingprocess with various projects infrastruc-tural as well as embellishment initia-tives, being carried out. *We urge our readers to entice their rel-atives and friends to register to the MTAe-Newsletter in order to keep abreastwith the positive news emanating fromthe Maltese Islands. Another Maltese ANZAC whojoined the New Zealand Expe-ditionary Forces was Mosta-

born Charlie Camilleri, son ofGiovanni and Mary Camilleri of 44Sda Speranza, Mosta (today known ei-ther by its Maltese name as Triq it-Tama, or commonly known as HopeStreet that is still one of the bestknown streets in the village).

Charles was born on August 4, 1895.He left Malta for New Orleans in theUnited Stats at an early age. His pass-port application held at the Malta Na-tional Archives is dated 17th March1911. He was then 16 years old and hisfather signed his consent for him totravel to America. On the boat Liguria were other Mosta

passengers all destined for New Or-leans, one of whom was a next-doorneighbour to Chares, a Giuseppe Mus-cat, son of Calcedonio. He was aged 17years. The group arrived in New Or-leans on the April 4, 1911.

Three years later, in 1914, we findCharles arriving in New Zealand andworking as an acrobat with a circus-performing company. On June 4th 1917, Charles joined as a

private with the Otago Infantry Regi-ment of the NZ Army. He was de-scribed as being 5 foot 2 inches tall andof dark complexion. He did sixmonths military duties in NewZealand and was then posted overseaswhere he served for two years inFrance till the termination of his en-gagement on December 5, 1919. For his contribution to the war effort,

he was awarded the British War Mealand the Victory Medal.A few months before the termination

of his engagement, on July 10, 1919Charles married Hilda May Coscoigneat St Giles London.

The NZ 1919 Electoral Roll lists himas a gas fitter residing at Rothwell St,Saltwater Creek, Timaru, while the1928 electoral roll also lists him at the

same address and his occupa-tion given as linesman.

There are no further entriesfor later years. Could he haveleft New Zealand? My good friend Joe Deguara

tells me that family talk in theDeguara household in Mostabelieve that Charles and Hil-da moved to Victoria, Aus-tralia. Through his good friend Vic-

tor, Joe Deguara I also con-firmed Charles’ date of birthas the 4th August 1895 andnot 1896 as it was incorrectlywritten down in officialrecords that enlisted CharlieCamilleri a Malta-bornANZAC in the NZ Army.

Jien f'din l-ençiklika, ma rajt l-ebda pronunzja dwar affarijietxjentifiçi. Il-pronunzji saru u qed isiru minn xjenzjati u organiz-zazzjonijiet o˙ra.

Il-Papa, wara li jinnutahom, qieg˙ed juri li hemm obbligu tal-bniedem biex jie˙u azzjoni, u jekk hu nisrani, jag˙ti r-ra©unijietbibbliçi u l-prinçipji nsara g˙aliex g˙andu jag˙mel dan. Din hijapoΩizzjoni morali u politika, u mhux xjentifika.

Huwa interessanti li ninnutaw ta˙dita li ta l-Kardinal lill-Fon-dazzjoni fuq il-Politika tat-Tibdil tal-Klima, fil-katidral ta' West-minster f'Londra, fl-2011.5

Fiha mhux biss jistaqsi jekk ix-xjenza dwar it-tibdil tal-klimahijiex stabbilita u kemm hemm kunsens fuqha, imma jirribattihabilli jikkwota lill-matematiku Lonrenz dwar l-impossibilta' li tip-prevedi l-futur, lil diversi xjentisti li ma jiffurmawx parti minndan il-kunsens li ma jaççettawx l-immudellar bil-kompjuter li ji©ikkwotat, igerger li l-influwenzi tax-xemx u tal-vulkani majing˙atawx importanza, u jsemmi ˙afna u ˙afna inçertezzi o˙rabiex jitfa’ dubju fuq il-konkluΩjoni li l-bniedem huwa l-ka©untat-tibdil preΩenti fil-klima.Jien m'inix se nid˙ol fil-mertu, g˙ax dan mhux l-iskop tal-artiklu

tieg˙i. Imma l-intervent tal-Kardinal fl-2011, elokwenti, wiesg˙au mhux nieqes mill-interess, kien wie˙ed purament xjentifiku.Allura huwa l-Kardinal Pell biss, fil-Knisja Kattolika, li jista'jitkellem u jippronunzja ru˙u fuq is-su©©ett? Dakinhar ma kienxjemmen fl-awtonomija tax-xjenza? Din mhi xejn ˙lief ipokrisija.

Huwa diffiçli biex nifhem g˙alfejn xi ˙add bl-intelli©enza tal-Kardinal jasal li jg˙ajjar lis-superjur tieg˙i b'dak li jag˙mel hu. Forsi t-twe©iba qeg˙da f'paragrafu 217 tal-ençiklika, fejn il-Papa

jirrimarka li xi nsara devoti, bl-iskuΩa tar-realiΩmu u l-prag-matiΩmu, g˙andhom il-˙abta li jirredikolaw stqarrijiet ta' t˙assibdwar l-ambjent.

Dawn il-kliem japplikaw perfettament g˙all-gvern preΩenti Aw-straljan, immexxi mis-Sur Tony Abbott, li kemm ilu li tela' g˙amelminn kollox biex l-uΩu tas-sorsi ffossilizzati tal-ener©ija jitkomplau possibilment jitqawwa, u inaqqas l-investiment f'sorsi sostenibblital-ener©ija. Dan huwa l-oppost ta' dak li hemm fl-ençiklika.

B'kumbinazzjoni, il-Prim Ministru huwa ˙abib personali tal-Kardinal Pell. Forsi l-Eminenza ˙ass li kellu jaqbeΩ xi ftit g˙alih!

Acrisp winter’s start for a visit to theBlue Mountains for very activeMaltese Seniors group from Fair-

field, in Sydney’s west that is sponsoredby The Maltese Community Council ofNSW.

The group was “blessed from above”with great weather for a wonderful day outvisiting the pretty village of Leura wherethey were able to browse through themany quaint little shops with their amaz-ing wares on display for all to enjoy. Next, the group went to Echo Point where theyenjoyed the spectacular views of The

Three Sisters and were eagerly joined fora photo shoot by visiting Japanese tourists. The seniors experienced some easy walks

through the bush paths where the wildlifeand native plants are so abundant. Ofcourse, all this activity promotes a healthyappetite and so on to lunch at the nearbyKatoomba RSL for a smorgasbord lunch. Afterwards the group headed for the Sce-

nic Railway that was an absolute delightto the seniors as most remembered bring-ing their families when many years before.

So much to see and do in this wonderfullocation. One lady told me “she felt like

she was on holiday”. How wonderful itwas for me to see these Maltese seniorstruly enjoying themselves and sharingtheir experiences with their friends.

I encourage all Maltese seniors in theSydney area to join their nearest group toexperience the many social benefits of be-longing to groups such as this one. (Note: This is a Welfare Service of theMaltese Community Council of NSW.Phone 0414 863 123 for more informa-tion.)

Boats being turned back

Victorian Liberal backbencher TonySmith has been elected as the newSpeaker of the House of Represen-

tatives, the 30th. The new Speaker was se-lected by lower house Liberal MPs in asecret ballot a week after the resignationof Bronwyn Bishop. Before entering Federal Parliament Tony

Smith was a staffer to former TreasurerPeter Costello. He entered the lowerhouse representing the seat of Casey in2001 and served as parliamentary secre-tary to the Prime Minister in the HowardGovernment. Tony Smith arrived in Parliament House

in mid-1990 as Peter Costello’s press sec-retary, later the then Treasurer made himhis senior advisor.Tony Smith battled it out with fellow Vic-

torian backbencher Russell Broadbent,South Australian MP Andrew Southcottand Queenslander Ross Vasta. Mr. Smithwon the final stage of the eliminationprocess against Russell Broadbent 51 to 22.

party room tactics while he holds the posi-tion. “I will not be attending weekly partymeetings,” Mr. Smith told Parliament. “It'smy view that the Speaker should not onlybe, but also seen to be, independent of thepartisan day-to-day fray.” He said the deci-

sion was both sym-bolic and practical.

After weeks offurore surroundingher grandiose use oft axpaye r s - fundedtravel perks, BronwynBishop the Speaker ofthe Federal Parlia-ment resigned whilethe PM Tony Abbottunveiled a sweepingreview into MPs' enti-tlements, saying anew system would re-store public trust.

Mrs. Bishop andPeter Slipper are the

two speakers of the Australian House ofRepresentatives to be forced to resign indisgrace.

Bronwyn Kathleen Bishop was the 29thSpeaker of the House of Representativesbetween November 2013 and August2015. She was born in 1942. Elected as a Senator in 1987, she was the

first woman president of the Liberal PartyNSW Branch. She became the Member ofMackellar in the lower house in 1994.Served as well as Minister of Defence andMinister for Aged Care.

In Parliament, the Prime Minister saidthat the former speaker served with dis-tinction for over 30 years “she has been awarrior for the causes that she believedin”. He quoted John Howard: “politics ishard and unforgiving business but it isamongst the highest and noble forms ofpublic service”.Bronwyn Bishop gained attention for her

imbalance in booting MPs out of Parlia-ment: 393 from Labor and seven from theCoalition.

Under the Abbott government, 630 asy-lum seekers and 20 boats have been

turned back, including a group that was re-turned to Vietnam last month. It was a rearstatement by Peter Dutton the ImmigrationMinister of usually secret details of “on-water operations”. A boat containing 157 Tamil asylum seek-

ers arrived in June last year. There is nodoubt that the turn-back policy of the Ab-bott Government, described as cruel by crit-ics, has dramatically stemmed the flow ofasylum seekers boats headed to Australia.

The City2Surf is a road runningevent held annually in Sydney,

Australia since September 1971, cov-ering a 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) course. The event is a "fun run" as well as arace, attracting both competitive run-ners and community participants whocan choose to run or to walk.

The event this year, the 45th time, held on a deliriously sunny day at-

tracted more than 80,000 entrantswho started in staggered groups basedon previous running times and earlyentry.

The event raises more than $4 mil-lion for charity. Even Prime MinisterTony Abbott took part finishing in 80minutes. Brad Milosevic finishedfirst male in 42.15 and Casandra Fienfirst female in 46.39 minutes.

Before he heads to Malta for theCHOGM, Prime Minister Tony Ab-

bott will attend the United Nations Cli-mate Change Conference to be held inLe Bourget Paris, France from Novem-ber 30 to December 11. The confer-ence’s objective is to achieve a legally

binding and universal agreement onclimate, from all the nations of theworld.

The government decided it wouldhalve its emissions per person over thenext 15 years under a long-awaited cli-mate change pledge. It predicts will cutharmful greenhouse gas emissions with-out sacrificing the economy.

It will reduce the amount of green-house gas released into the atmosphereby 26-28 per cent by 2030, based on2005 levels.

Mr. Abbott said the government wasfocused on growth and jobs, and thepledge was a “good, solid, economi-

cally responsible, environmentally re-sponsible target”. Environment Minister Greg Hunt said

the target showed “we do the rightthing by the planet and we also do theright thing by families who are con-cerned by cost-of-living pressures andpower prices”.

Labor Leader Bill Shorten said thegovernment was trying to “drag Aus-tralia backwards on climate change”and it must demonstrate how the targetwas consistent with the 2-degree warm-ing scenario. Australia is among theworst greenhouse gas polluters percapita in the Western World.

Since January 166,700 extra Australians have beenput into work, giving the Abbott government areasonable chance of fulfilling its commitment tocreate one million new jobs in its first five years.

There was a pickup in the market for the firsttime since 2013 as new employment figures re-leased by the Bureau of Statistics show both em-ployment and unemployment climbing. In thethree months to July Australia’s unemploymentrose from 6 to 6.3 percent.

The number of Australians out of work rose to87,500. The clue to making sense of the apparentcontradiction is an increase in the number of Aus-tralians changing their status from “not in labourforce to unemployed”. Australia’s three biggest states were responsible

for almost all of the employment growth sinceJanuary, with NSW gaining 113,500 jobs, Victoria27.300 and Queensland 22.600. Elsewhere em-ployment gains have been modest or negative.

Climate change and Australia

Australia has the world’s largest known ura-nium resources - 31% of the world’s total. Itis a significant player in the industry withenough mining to be the world’s third biggestproducer of the nuclear fuel.

Uranium has been mined here since 1954. Ithas three mines, two in South Australia andone in the Northern Territory. Its production isall exported and comprises about 35% of thecountry's energy exports in thermal terms.

However, the Industry remains small com-pared with gold, copper and coal, and accord-ing to Peter Ker of the SMH, it has endured asevere downturn over the past four years.

Uranium became fashionable in investmentcircles between 2004 and 2008 as awarenessof climate change led many to speculate thatnuclear power could be large-scale, centralisesource of electricity free of carbon emissions.

Australia uses no nuclear power, but withhigh reliance on coal any likely carbon con-straints on electricity generation will make ita strong possibility.

This year the South Australian governmentset up a royal commission into the potential fornuclear power.

Apenalty miss byMatthew Clowesin the dying min-

utes of their Round 21home match against Ro-

ckdale at the Melita Sta-dium seemed to have ser-

iously com-promised Par-ramatta (Mel-ita Eagles)’ssurvival hop-es, but in thefinal round onSunday, their2-1 win atManly U. ce-cemented theirposition in thetop-flight fornext season.

The Eagles fought valiantlyand eventually got the resultthey needed to stay in thePS4 NPL I Div NSW foranother season.proved to be a job welldone.

Marco Sama gave the Ea-gles a third-minute leadwitha shot from 25 yards. Theycould have added anotherwhile Patrick Gatt clearedoff the line to deny manlythe leveller. Then two min-utes Shayne Ardle doubledthe score .Manly worked hard to sal-

vage some-thing, but allthey got wasa consola-

tion tally from ubstitute CJArditti.

A relieved Parramatta FCcoach Franco Cosentinosaid afterwards, “I think wedeserve to be in this compe-tition, the boys play withheart and desire everyweek.“Both our goals were qual-

ity, we have a rich history asa club, the aim now is to getbetter and be a” In the previous round, Par-

ramatta found tehmseves agoal down on 53 minutesagainst Rockdale and then

after Luke Grima was pul-led down for a penalty,Matthew Clowes missedthe chance to equalise whentepped goalkeeper Necev-ski saved his spotkick.his goalkeeper beatenThe game was so impor-

tant for Parramatta after amidweek 1-1 draw at homeagainst Blacktown S. Theywere shattered with the re-sult, but in the final gamethey managed to dust them-selves and rise to the occa-sion to get the result theyneeded for safety.

Ihave often said that we should beproud with the achievements of our

young ones and that we should encour-age them in whatever they choose tospecialise in, being studies, sports or what-ever.

Rose Sacco from the Reskeon Seniors Gro-up at Merrilands Community Centre proudlyindicated to me the achievements in sports ofher 16-year-old granddaughter, Madison Con-wel who in July trained with the full Aus-tralian netball squad that was preparing for theNetball World Cup just ended and whichAustralia won for teh 11th time.

Madison was one of four players fromQueensland. Others were from NSW, Victoria. It was just reward for a kid who has been

showing great improvement in this particularsport. She was not in the final World Cupteam, but her chance will surely come.

Madison has been playing netball and in-

door netball since the age of five. She hasrepresented Queensland on numerous occa-sions and even formed part of a number ofDivision 1 representative teams for differentQueensland Associations.

But after playing for Queensland in theAustralian National Junior competition, lastDecember Madison received her greatest ho-nour when she was selected to representAustralia in the Junior (Under-16s) IndoorNetball Tri-Nations Tournament in Perth,July 12-8. The teams played a mix of six-a-side and seven-a-side games.

Madison played centre and wing attackagainst New Zealand and South Africa andwas even named vice-captain of the U/16s.Teams from Australia, South Africa and

New Zealand contested the series in the 6-a-side and 7-a-side disciplines. In the 6s Madison was in the team that beat

New Zealand, and then formed part of theteam in the grand final against South Africawhere Madison scored 30 goals out of a totalof 47 scored by her team. Unfortunately theAussies lost the final 53-25 and received thesilver medal.

Two days later the Australian team tookpart in the 7s (Australian) game. They wentthroughout the competition undefeated andin the Gold final defeated South Africa 73-24. So this time Madison and her team addedthe gold medal to the silver.
