Now the garden is at rest, there is
little to be done, so start planning
for next year. Use
evergreens from the
garden to
decorate the house for
Christmas.
Green House: Keep checking your
overwintering plants. Check the
cold frame as well. Sometimes mice
who come in from the cold, nibble
the
contents so you may have to set
traps.
Page 11
Christmas Trees: Will drop their needles because their roots have been cut off and they suffer from being kept dry, in hot living rooms for several weeks. To combat this, keep it outdoors in a bucket of water until the last minute. When you bring it indoors plant it in a bucket filled with soil or gravel and keep it really wet. An average size tree will need about a pint (600ml) of water a day. The soil can be disquised with pine cones. Plan seed purchases: To avoid buying too much seed, we draw up a list of what we need. List the beds or containers you want to fill, note whether the plant will be in a sunny or shady spot and then look for appropriate varieties. When you have purchased them, you can tick them off your list. Also check seeds you have saved from previous years before buying new ones. Finally: We hope our wee Hints and Tips were helpful to you over the year. We would like to wish you a happy Christmas and productive new year. Keep up the good work
See you in 2014!
