Friday July 24, 2:15 pm- The Power of Play – Adults Need Recess Too
Can you remember the last time you played? If you can’t, then you may be missing out
on an important way to give your physical and mental health a boost.
Studies and research show that adults, too, have a lot to gain from the act of playing.
When done frequently, it strengthens your heart, boosts your lung function and lowers
your risk of developing coronary heart disease. Not only that, physical play like sports
and exercise, also reduce your stress hormones (e.g cortisol and adrenaline) and trigger
the release of endorphins — your feel-good hormones — which elevates your mood and
helps you relax after a stressful day. As you age, play facilitates happiness, wards off
depression, improves cognitive health and lowers your risk of developing age-related
diseases like dementia.

Friday July 24, 7:00 p.m. - National Orchestral Institute Performs Mahler and Clyne
Michael Stern led a triumphant conclusion to the 2019 NOI+F with music by Anna Clyne
and Gustav Mahler. Clyne’s turbulent This Midnight Hour is based on poetry of Juan
Ramón Jiménez and Charles Baudelaire and evokes a surreal nocturnal scene. Mahler’s
towering fifth symphony is an emotional journey from its exposed beginning to its
triumphant finale. Departing from his earlier symphonies, which are strongly
intertwined with Mahler’s vocal art song, Symphony No. 5’s style is gripping and
passionate while expressing the vulnerability and intimacy of mankind’s struggle to rise
in the face of adversity.

Geraldine Bainbridge is well known among her
fashionable circa-1889 London set as an heiress, a
philanthropist, and a supporter of highly unsuitable
causes, including women’s rights. Fiercely independent,
she is proud of having arrived at the age of 73 without
ever having been, in her words, “netted and mounted.” But when a mysterious letter
arrives from India – sent from a long-ago lover now jailed for the murder of his wife–
even Gerry’s friends and family realize that they know very little of her romantic past. As
Geraldine journeys to assist with Anthony’s defense, she is joined by her close friend
Detective Trevor Welles, head of Scotland Yard’s first forensics unit, as well we the rest
of the Thursday Night Murder Games Club. The group has scarcely arrived in Bombay
when it becomes clear this is no ordinary domestic crime, but rather a case with far-
reaching political implications, whose roots stretch back to the Great Mutiny of 1857.
Scrambling to unravel the clues before the body count goes yet higher, the Club must
contend with documents which fall to dust in the wake of white termites, a tree whose
sap yields “the perfect murder weapon,” the stubborn headmistress of an orphanage,
and a meddling politician who seems determined to thwart the investigation at every
turn. As they combat the heat, the insects, the monsoons, and the petty prejudices of
the Raj, often finding themselves more in sympathy with the suspects than the victims,
Trevor and the others are forced to confront an uncomfortable question: Is murder ever
justifiable?

Brainstorming Discussion- Good afternoon, First, I would like to state that beginning in October I will become the chairperson of the Transportation and Safety subcommittee. The other evening, I met with a group of about 14 to brainstorm some ideas about phasing in shuttle services to grocery stores and the New Carrollton transit center. What I am asking for at this juncture is ideas from the residents...which grocery stores would you be most interested in returning to? Do you see yourself using Metro, Amtrak, or MARC for commutes, trips, or travel to medical appointments? At this time, feel free to email me with any ideas you may have, and if you might be interested in attending any future discussions. Thank you for your time...have a great day, Diane Hoover

More About Dining Chair Position:
The nominating committee for the Chairperson of the Dining Committee
realizes that the description below seems daunting. We believe it is helpful
as background to know the way Eloise Scott (Scotti) approached the position
a year or so ago. However, we also know that there is among us a
competent and confident person, interested in food and the dining experience at Collington, someone who will be enthusiastic about supporting
our fine Culinary staff. We certainly know that that person will have her or
his own way of working with residents and staff.
So, the invitation is to consider applying. We would welcome your offer to sit down and talk about participating in some aspect of the Dining
Committee for the next year. We are in a different time with pandemic
restrictions, and you could help design Collington's "new normal.
Invitation for Dining Services Committee Chair Nominations
There’s surely no more basic characteristic of any community than the food we eat and how it’s prepared and presented. Collington is fortunate to
have a wonderfully diverse community, whose food preferences are also diverse; a dedicated staff which strives to give us delicious choices; and a
supportive resident committee which, in turn, supports the staff. With all this complexity, of course there are challenges. Good ones!
The position of Dining Committee chair is open, and in this time of
transition brought on by the pandemic, the role of this important position is evolving. The nominating committee for the Dining Services Committee (DSC) now invites your suggestions or self-referrals. We are looking for a
leader, or co-leaders, and a team approach to the various responsibilities.
We want you to have a realistic idea of what past Dining Committee chairs have done, and how you might fit into such a team.
The position of Chairperson, is for 1 year – October through September, and is renewable for a second year, or longer. It is customary to take a break in
July and August.
GENERAL
The Dining Services Committee is one of seven operating committees that
work with the management in the particular area of Collington operations
and resident concerns.
14 Courier July 20-26, 2020
In the past, the DSC met on the first Wednesday of the month at 10:00 am in the Board room. It was attended by residents seeking information about
dining services and offers a place where they may make comments or
express their concerns regarding dining services. One or more members of
the Collington Culinary staff attends the monthly meeting. In recent
months, usual resident attendance is 18-24 persons.
LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS
Primarily, the committee chair and working group seeks to collaborate with
culinary leadership and staff regarding planning of menus and other dining issues.
The chair is supportive in the ongoing training for staff/workers, and in
general, seeks to engender a feeling of cooperation, competency, satisfaction and
pride in the dining services environment. To work effectively as a committee during the pandemic, technological
experience is needed. The chair should
-have knowledge and capability to operate computer-based applications such as
email, Zoom™, electronic/digital documents and other Microsoft Office™ or Apple
communications. - Use voice messaging as a part of standard telephone communications.
RESPONSIBLITIES
1. Prepare an agenda and chair the DSC meetings.
2. Meet with the Director of Culinary Services at least once per month (and
his staff as needed/requested). Impromptu meetings with the Director may be needed occasionally. Collaborate with him/her and provide
feedback and support regarding issues, concerns and items of continuous
improvement.
3. Develop an understanding of the structure and operation of Culinary Services here at Collington.
15 Courier July 20-26, 2020
4. Establish a small working group (4-6 persons) to work with the culinary
staff regarding general communications, menus, issues, concerns, potential resolutions and decisions.
5. Establish a mechanism/process for receiving concerns from the residents
with a view toward a) separating and addressing systemic versus
personal resident issues and b) resolution /continuous improvement and
support of both the culinary staff and residents.
6. Appoint a resource person to establish/perform DSC survey activities.
7. Interact with the Chair of the Hospitality Committee regarding hospitality events. In accordance with the RA bylaws, the Hospitality Committee is
under the DSC.
8. Prepare a report of activities of the DSC to be presented at the monthly Residents Association Council meeting and attend the Council meeting
that is held on the third Tuesday of the month.
9. As required, meet with other operating chairs and the RA First Vice President who is responsible for the oversight of the operating
committees. 10.Prepare an annual report of the DSC activities and submit it to the RA
Executive Committee.
This is a challenging but meaningful opportunity. Please think about ways you have successfully worked with people in various settings, so that your
experience could help continue our high standards for the dining experience – for preparation and presentation of our meals.
You are invited to speak with, or email, any of the following, by July

GRATITUDE & KUDOS
Once again, I am blown away by our awesome staff. I find it amazing that our employees tested negative for Covid last week. If you are watching the news, you will notice that this disease is once again surging throughout our country.
Prince George’s County alone has well over 20,000 cases. So I must conclude that the precautions our staff are taking when they leave this campus every single day, are working quite well. They deserve all the Gratitude and Kudos we can give.
Here is some excellent information for all of us to remember.
