RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “Graduating and Commencing”
Throughout the months of May and June, high school
and college seniors participate in graduation ceremonies
as they conclude their formal programs of study. Some will
go on to additional courses of study, either in college in the
case of high school students, or in graduate school,
internships and residencies in the case of college grads.
But even those whose formal schooling is complete will go
on learning for the rest of their lives. As married adults and
then as parents, as professionals at work and in life
generally they will all continue to grow in knowledge,
experience, and wisdom. So commencement ceremonies
for these young people represent the completion of a
chapter in their lives, rather than an end to their learning.
This is also the time of year when we recall another kind
of commencement, that of the Israelites completing one
chapter in their national history and, of course, beginning
another. The holiday on which we recall that ‘graduation’ is
Shavuot, the festival of weeks, so called because it occurs
seven weeks after Pesakh. Our sages call Shavuot zman
matan Torateinu, the time of the giving of our Torah.
Having freed the people from slavery in Egypt, God now
provides them a set of laws by which they are to live as
free people on their way to a new homeland in Canaan.
Like our modern graduates, the Israelites will now know
what they should be doing, but this culminating event was
not an end for them, either. Having been given the Torah,
their task would now be to live by its wisdom. How to do so
was not always clear, and so the corpus of oral law which
tradition tells us began with Moses and continued down
through the rabbinic period clarified exactly how to live that
life.

UPSTAIRS THOUGHTS NOTES FROM THE CANTOR
RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “Graduating and Commencing” (continued)
But times change; the graduate who does not keep up with
the latest technology and best practices will soon see their
job at risk to younger and more current candidates. If we
do not learn more each year about how to live healthy
lives, we risk illness and a shortening of years. Just as our
knowledge of the world must constantly expand, so too our
knowledge of Torah and Judaism must increase in order
for us to live meaningful lives. Rabbi Abraham Joshua
Heschel wrote that religion is not simply another aspect of
life; it is that aspect which provides depth to all the others.
That may be why the rabbis did not call Shavuot zman
kabbalat Torateinu, the time of the receiving of our Torah.
The Torah was given only once; after that it is up to us to
continually and actively receive it. We can do so on
Shabbat during services, when I share teachings from our
tradition, in adult classes during the school year and, of
course, on Shavuot itself when we gather on the evening of
June 3rd for the annual Tikkun Leil Shavuot. We recall God
giving the Torah to our ancestors by receiving some of it
personally in our own time, on the date when they did the
same. I look forward to seeing you as we jointly sponsor
the Tikkun this year with our friends from Congregation
Beth Am. A number of teachers, clergy and lay, will present
words of Torah, and after each presentation we will have
some cheesecake or other dairy dessert. Why dairy?
Come to the Tikkun and I’ll tell you.
Rabbi Jeff Pivo

Support Congregation Beth Judea! | Join Team | Make a gift!
This year, our Congregation Beth Judea team will be walking
in the Take Steps for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of
America (CCFA). Take Steps is CCFA's national walk and
celebration and the nation's largest event dedicated to finding
cures for inflammatory bowel diseases.
We will enjoy a casual 2-3 mile stroll and raise money for
crucial research, bringing us closer to a future free from Crohn's
disease and ulcerative colitis. Over 1.4 million American adults
and children are affected by these digestive diseases. While
many suffer in silence, Take Steps brings together this
community in a fun, energetic and supportive atmosphere.
Your donation will help support local patient programs, as well
as important research projects. In addition to donating, you can
join us at the event as a member of our team. There will be
food, music and kid's activities. The more money we raise, the
closer we will be to making life more manageable for patients
who live with these diseases every day.
Please join our team or donate to our efforts to support CCFA
in finding cures!

SOCIAL ACTION
Homelessness and hunger are unfortunately part of our suburban fabric.
The Social Action Committee worked with Journeys/The Road Home
“PADS” program during the past year providing food for the homeless.
This summer the “PADS” volunteers have decided to work with local faith
groups to provide meals for the homeless.
Congregation Beth Judea has been assigned June 16 to provide meals, vegetables, salad and
serving volunteers. We are in need of the following:
3 people to cook a main dish
4 people to cook a vegetable dish
4 people to provide a salad
3 people to attend that evening and help serve the food/clean up after (Note: Kimberley Levy is maintaining the “sign-up” log for this event. Her information is provided on the bottom left below.)
Each dish provided should be enough to feed 15 – 20 adults. The main dish and vegetable should be
brought to Kingswood United Church at 6:00 p.m. hot and ready to serve. They should be packaged
in disposable containers. If you would be willing to provide something, but are unable to bring it to the
site, we can make arrangements to deliver it for you.
If you would like to volunteer that evening you must be at Kingswood United Church at 5:30 p.m. and
be there until 9:00 pm. Children must be at least 16 years old to attend.
LOCATION: Kingswood United Church is at 401 W. Dundee Road, Buffalo Grove
The guests being served are all clients of the Journeys/The Road Home service.
Please contact Kimberley Levy at [email protected] or 847/913-5447 if you have any questions or would like to help out. Kimberley will let you know if the “spot” you are interested in is filled, and if not, what else may be needed.
Sometimes... I want to ask God why...
He allows hunger, poverty, and
injustice in the world when He
could do something about it.
But then I’m afraid He will
ask me the same question.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE
“Its okay, the children aren’t affected” But what if you knew they were? Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen. According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

What To Do Over the Summer Now that formal classes are over, there are many things that parents can do to help our students nourish and maintain their Jewish identities throughout the summer months. Below is a list of ways students can enhance their Jewish identities on a more informal basis.
Primary Grades (PK-2) Play with a friend from CBJ Religious School Read a Jewish book (PJ Library sends a new book each month) Listen to Jewish or Israeli music Come to Shabbat services Light Shabbat candles Say a bracha Make a Jewish art project Donate groceries to a food pantry
Grade 3 (any of the above plus)
Read from your Siddur Review Hebrew 10-15 minutes a day Come to Shabbat or a weekday service
Grade 4 (any of the above plus)
Read a Bible, holiday or Israel story Practice the Friday evening service
Grade 5 (any of the above plus)
Practice the Shacharit service Grade 6 (any of the above plus)
Practice the Torah and Musaf service Practice the Torah and Haftarah blessings
The intrinsic reward of vacationing with one’s Jewish heritage is far greater than the material prize a student may win. The ultimate goal would be to incorporate these habits into one’s lifestyle.
Best wishes for a very relaxing summer vacation.

SPRING INTO A GOOD BOOK!
THE ORPHAN TRAIN By Christina Baker Kline
Between 1854-1929, orphan trains ran regularly from
cities on the East coast to the farmlands of the
Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children
whose fates would be determined by pure luck.
Moving between contemporary Maine & Depression-
era Minnesota, Orphan Train is a powerful tale of
upheaval & resilience, second chances & unexpected
friendship.
Book discussion will be on Wednesday, June 18-7pm

The Word June 2014 Page 16
Men’s Club strives to offer something for everyone. As such, we’re always open to new and creative programming ideas that help Jewish men lead rich and filling Jewish Lives.
David Granoff President – Men’s Club
We've had a phenomenal year that included many successes
including our most highly attended Steak and Scotch under the
Sukkah; our most highly attended Men's Club regional retreat,
and a refreshingly new Men's Club Shabbat.
Your Men's Club also has a huge commitment to the CBJ
community and the greater Jewish community, as we lead the
Hebrew Literacy programs at Beth Judea and are active
participants in making Shabbat services a reality for the elderly
at Lieberman's Geriatric Home. Our Chanukah and Yellow
Candle programs support our commitment to Beth Judea's
youth and remembering the Holocaust, respectively.
All of this (and much more) comes as a result of commitment
from our Men's Club Board and it's members. Moving this
commitment forward for Men's Club in the next two years are:
Officers
President – Eric Yegelwel
VP Programming - Allen Harris
VP Ritual - Louis Rabin
VP Membership/Communications - David Granoff
Treasurer - Brian Schwartz
Secretary - Jerry Sakol
Directors (New)
Rob Lipka
Ron Friedman
Maynard Hirsch
Continuing on the board in director capacity
Norm Kurtz
Fred Rabinowitz

Please extend these gentlemen a hardy congratulations
as you see them around and be sure to plan on joining
us for our kick off events in August: Men's Club v USY

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
HELP THE ELDERLY ATTEND SERVICES
Once a month, the Beth Judea Men’s Club volunteers at the Lieberman Geriatric Center and helps the elderly get to and from services.
It’s just a matter of going to their rooms and helping them get downstairs. It is a wonderful experience. Assistance from all congregants is welcome!
You would need to be at the Center at about 9:15 am and you will be done about 11:30 am. The Lieberman Center is located at 9700 Gross Pointe Road in Skokie.
We would appreciate your help on:
June 7, 2014 and July 5, 2014
Please contact Jerry Sakol if you would like to volunteer.
We firmly believe that reaching out to others
benefits not only the recipient, but the person
providing help as well. This is, without a
doubt, a win-win situation for all involved.

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . .
If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth,
engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about
it so that this milestone can be included in The Word.
If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would
like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be
said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the
Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of
assistance.
If there is a death in your family, we would like to know
about it so that we can offer our support, can share this
information with our congregation, and so that we can
add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
Please call the synagogue office with this information.

Aliyah in Our 60’s – June 2014 - Part 26
Something good came out of the recent negotiations with the Palestinians. It was not something that was negotiated
but one of Israel’s concessions to advance the recent attempt at negotiations. The Israeli Civil Administration has
agreed to remove the ban of sulfuric acid from being transferred to the West Bank. According to the Friends of the
Earth Middle East, FoEME, this ban was creating a “seeping time bomb” for Palestinians and Israelis. In 2005, after
the Second Infitada, the Civil Administration banned sulfuric acid from the West Bank because it could be used as an
explosive. Chromium is used in tanning leather, (there are 13 leather tanneries in the West Bank Hebron Industrial
Zone); because of its high cost, it is reused in the tanning process and can convert into hexavalent chromium, or
chromium VI. This form is carcinogenic and becomes part of the industrial waste. This waste is able to spread in the
soil as well as into certain portions of the western aquifer shared by Palestinians and Israelis. Releasing this sulfuric
acid ban will allow the chromium removal plant in the Hebron Industrial Zone to resume operations after almost a
decade.

HOWIE AND SUZANNE GOODMAN
(continued on next page)
The Word June 2014
Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members
at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in
2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us
with a blog on their experiences as new olim in
Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans,
we can all look forward to reading about their
adventures in Israel through the blog.
Yom Hashoah this year was the 70th anniversary of the elimination of 700,000
Jews in Hungary. Our synagogue service this year was about the experiences
of our Rabbi Emeritus, Rabbi Ervin Birnbaum was 16 years old in 1944 when
the German Army took over Hungary. After hiding in an attic for 3 weeks, he
managed to escape being sent to a death camp. At the service, his sons and
many of his grandchildren listened to his story. Rabbi Birnbaum moved to the
United States after the war, was a rabbi in Danville, Illinois, and then made
aliyah with his family 40 years ago. This was the first time we had heard
details of the way he was able to survive and, as with other stories of the
Shoah, it was a tragedy.

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page)
(continued on next page)
Israel was founded on the ashes of the Shoah. Almost two hundred thousand survivors live in Israel, and their
average age is eighty-five. Cost of living is very high in Israel, and too many (one is too many) are living below the
poverty level. The Knesset has just passed a bill to increase assistance by one billion shekels (350 million dollars)
to help 193,000 survivors. As Yair Lapid, Minister of Finance, stated,
We are losing these survivors at the rate of 13,000 a year and they should live their remaining years in comfort.
“Today we are changing the priorities and correcting the injustice of many decades
in which the survivors were abandoned, pushed aside and lost in the great tangle
known as Israeli bureaucracy. It is unconceivable that those who managed to
survive the worst atrocities of human society will not survive the Israeli
bureaucracy. This, we change today.“
Tushiya School is a grade school in Netanya for children with mental
disabilities. Every year our synagogue, Bet Israel, provides the opportunity
for children from the school to have a b’nai mitzvah ceremony in our
facility. If we did not have this arrangement, there would be no synagogue
that would allow this milestone for the children and their families. It is a
very joyous occasion to see them being assisted through the blessings
and to see the happiness on their faces.
If you would like to assist us in providing this service to the community,
your financial help would be appreciated. Let us know and we will explain
how you can do this as a tax free contribution.
We subscribe to, and enjoy reading, the Jerusalem Post. One of the reasons we like it is that it is in English! Reading a newspaper in Hebrew is a slow and laborious task for us. A recent headline in The Jerusalem Post was “Landscaping firm installs solar phone-charging street lamps." The solar-powered streetlamp stores enough energy during the day to enable street lighting at night and device-charging at all hours. This invention reflects two things about Israel. First, we are constantly looking for ways to create and exploit solar energy as the cost of electricity is rising all the time. Second, no one here is ever very far from their cell phone. Israeli children seem to start carrying a cell phone at seven or eight years old. Passenger trains even have outlets to charge your cell phone. Kitty Hoffman said she didn’t think this was available in the States. So maybe you can look for it soon! Israeli society is one of opportunity. The "A" word has been bantered about recently because of a "private" conversation Secretary of State had at a Trilateral Commission gathering. We recently discovered with the Donald Sterling remarks that nothing is private. Israel is far from a perfect democracy; no democracy can claim perfection. However, within the borders of Israel, all Israeli citizens have the same basic rights. These include the right to vote, to run for the Knesset, to have healthcare coverage, to rent or buy a home, to have a driver's license, to own vehicles, to work anywhere in Israel, and much more. Because of the terrible Syrian conflict, Syrian mothers are bringing children to our border to be medically treated almost daily. We do not turn them away; some become patients in our hospitals. Christian Israeli Arabs are starting to be included in the draft. The Druze have been part of the Israeli Military for years, and some have risen to the rank of general. There are no separate restaurants, bathrooms, or buses. Many Israeli Arabs attend the University of Haifa, Ben Gurion, Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University- basically all universities. Each year there is a cooking competition of non-professional cooks called "Master Chef". This year an Israeli-Arab Moslem with a PhD from the Technion in Biological Sciences won; last year, a former German Christian man who converted and made alyiah won. The runner up was an Israeli Arab Moslem woman. Miss Israel this year, is an Israeli woman from Ethiopia. We see Israeli Arab Moslems working in the grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, and clothing stores. There are physicians, nurses, and in every type of work.

Healing Hearts – Mourning the Loss of a Spouse
or Partner (JCYS Program at Temple Chai)

We are told that there are Palestinians in East Jerusalem who are trying to obtain Israel citizenship before a peace agreement occurs so they can be part of Israel rather than Palestine. When a suggestion was made that Israelis currently residing in the West Bank should become Palestinians if there is an agreement, President Abbas stated there will be no Jews in Palestine. With all of this mentioned, a recent poll showed only 24% of Israeli Arabs view Israel Independence Day as their holiday. We did notice as we drove by a couple of Israeli Arab cities or villages, no Israeli flags were visible. We must mention, to be fair, that there are Ultra-Orthodox Israelis who do not display Israeli flags or celebrate Independence Day. One of Beverly’s grad students at Haifa University is a Coptic (Egyptian) Christian from Nazareth. She recently finished her masters. Her mother is an accomplished architect and her father is a lawyer. They have a beautiful home in Nazareth. When they travel they are profiled at the airport. Her sister is putting a film together about abuse in the Arab families. It will be interesting how it is received by the Arab population. We will be visiting the states in June and look forward to seeing our relatives and friends. Lehitraot which means see you soon!

From The Editors
In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue
by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well.
We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing.
Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions
expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
