PARENTING SUPPORT
Welcome to today’s newsletter. This week’s
‘Parenting Support’ article is called
‘Manage like a cat, nurture like a dog’. This article has some
great tips about ‘finding your inner cat’ and ‘using your
inner dog’. Although it starts off talking about teenagers I
think there is something in this article for everyone. It certainly made me more aware of my
different behaviours and parenting approaches.
UPDATES No Assembly Tomorrow: Please note due to the Folk Festival set up and changes to our
regular program there will be no whole school assembly tomorrow. Awards will be given out next week (Friday, March 17).
Divisional Swimming: Thank you and congratulations to all of the students who represented our school at yesterday’s competition. Thanks also to Brooke Green for her coordination and extra time and effort. Well done everybody!
Parent Forums: Many thanks to the parents and grandparents who attended last week’s ‘Parent Forum’. It was a very informative and positive meeting, with some new ideas generated. A big thank you to our Literacy Leader, Debbie Dowell for her preparation and coordination of the event.
Folk Festival Family Evening: Thanks to everyone who supported our annual Folkie family concert and dinner last Tuesday. A special thank you to Cathy and Justin Connellan for coordinating the meal for us and to the Port Fairy Folk Festival for providing artists to prepare the students and perform with them.
Folkie Effort: Thanks to all the parents who have signed up to help with our big fundraising B&B over the Folkie Weekend. A special thanks once again, to Nicola McCartie for her tireless, expert coordination. More helpers still needed!
Tae Kwon Do: Lunchtime Tae Kwon Do will begin on Tuesday, May 2, in the hall. Group One
(F -2 X 15 students) 1:30pm – 2pm. Group Two (3-6 X 15 students) 2pm- 2:30pm. $2 per
session per child plus a $2 administration fee. Pay for 9 weeks up front (i.e. $20 per
student). Places limited. Please register your child’s interest at the office
Open Door: Please remember I sincerely extend an ‘Open Door’ to all members of our school community. I welcome feedback and encourage all parents to contact me at any time should you have any concerns or need for reassurance.
Calendar: Please see the table of events on this newsletter and mark your personal calendars. At PFCS we make every effort to keep everybody informed.

Foundation/Grade 1’s
In Reading we are continuing to explore Possum Magic, focusing on animals that are Indigenous
to Australia. We are also practicing reading to others. In Writing we are learning some new letter
shapes and how to write on a solid line. In Maths we are learning about place values – some of us
even went into the 100’s! Fantastic Friday is on hold this week as instead we are performing at the
Reardon Theatre this Friday. Students are not at school again until Wednesday 15th due to Mon-
day’s public holiday and the staff having personal development on Tuesday.
Grade 1/2’s
In Reading and Writing we are learning about Australia and Australian flora and fauna through
the story ’Possum Magic’. In Maths we are learning words and numbers to 100 and practising
counting strategies.
Grade 3/4’s
“Ngatan warr”, (nat n wa),means hello/welcome in Peek Whuurong. This is one of the many words
we have learnt over the last three weeks in the build up to our beautiful town’s major event; Folk-
ie! We are all very excited about performing at the Reardon Theatre on Friday. Inside the class-
room we have been focussing on ‘area’ in Maths. Our times table knowledge is helping us find our
answers. We have also been exploring the rules of turning a word into its plural, and in handwriting
we have honed the ‘u’ family letters as we fine-tune our Modern Victorian Cursive. Grade 5/6’s
5/6s are looking forward to helping out with their involvement with Fundraising tomorrow by bring-
ing up the mattresses from the lower oval in readiness for the Bed and Breakfast. The 5/6s will be
performing at the Reardon Theatre tomorrow from 2pm until 3pm. You are more than welcome to
come along and watch. Don’t forget school will be returning on Wednesday the 15th March as
teachers will be attending a Professional Development Day on The Tuesday after the long
weekend.

Maree Stewart (Art Teacher)
We acknowledge and thank the Port Fairy Folk Festival for all the learning and amazing
opportunities we have been provided with.
In Dance this week students worked in
small groups to create a sequence of
movements which they then refined and
presented to classmates. The dances had
to include a circular and straight pathway
and communicate an idea (animals).
There were some wonderful creative ideas
that really displayed the students’ efforts
and I was extremely pleased to see
everyone have a go at performing in front
of others. Awesome!
A fantastic day was had by everyone involved in the Division Swimming Championships yesterday in
Warrnambool. The weather was amazing and the swimming was even better! All the swim team members
improved on their pre-meet training times and it was wonderful to see them step up to the next level.
The full results aren’t available as yet, however 6 of our squad have qualified for the Regional
Championships in Ballarat on the 24th of March, they are;
Oscar Hill 50m Butterfly (1st) and 4x 50m Freestyle relay (2nd).
Talya Yildirim 50m Backstroke (3rd).
Yasmin Yildirim 50m Backstroke (1st).
Xavier Tweedly 4x 50m Freestyle Relay (2nd)
Adam Lee 4x 50m Freestyle Relay(2nd)
Toby Watkinson 4x 50m Freestyle Relay (2nd)
Good luck in Ballarat!
A huge thankyou to all the parents that came to support the team and assist with the organising and
timekeeping; Nadine Cuthbert, Jodie and Josh Hill (and extended family!), Anthony Dixon, Sean Spence,
Michelle Keoghan, Jaqui King, Sally Yildirim, Rochelle Morrison and John Adams, Kayle Gleeson and
Adele Brown. The day wouldn’t have run so smoothly without all of your help, thankyou.
Next event for this term is the District Athletic Sports for years 3 – 6 students on the 23rd March at
Brauerander. I am finalising the team and will let those competitors know early next week if not before.
Our Tennis Unit started this week in PE class, with the children getting to use all the wonderful new Tennis
equipment we received funding for. Look out PFTC, I think you may be inundated with more potential
Tennis stars! The children really had a ball, sorry the pun!
