Two new model homes showcase how you can live greatly at Summerlyn Village
In the popular residential destination of Bradford, Great Gulf invites you to “Live Greatly” at Summerlyn Village amid master-planned surroundings that nurture belonging. A long-time believer in giving back to the greater community, Great Gulf recently sold the three previous model homes at Summerlyn Village and donated the furnishings to Bradford House, which
provides supportive housing/assisted living for at-risk, low-income seniors with multiple physical and mental challenges. Located in Bradford, it is part of LOFT Community Services, and is the only program in in York Region or South Simcoe County serving this especially vulnerable group of seniors.
“We are delighted to support Bradford House with this furniture donation from our
Great Gulf model home,” said Christopher Wein, President Great Gulf Residential. “When we build in a community, we become a member of the community and stay connected by participating in local initiative.” A capital fundraising campaign is in eect to make upgrades and repairs to the building, which LOFT purchased last year.
At Summerlyn Village, the striking new Niven-appointed models reect the design and construction excellence you will nd in all of the homes on 40’ and 50’ lots. Ranging in size from 1,880 to 4,010 square feet and in price from $557,990, there is truly something for everyone. Plus, the prices here are up to $300,000 less than equivalent homes in the GTA!
Among the standard features in these homes (all as per plan) are an oak staircase from the main to second oor, 9-foot main oor ceiling heights and natural nish oak strip hardwood ooring on the main oor, plus imported ceramics.
Situated on Holland Street West (Highway 88) just east of Highway 400, Summerlyn Village is close to family-oriented amenities. e community features acres of protected woodlands, water and green spaces, community parks and a future town centre.
e Sales Centre is located o Highway 88, just west of Professor Day Drive, at 22 Downey Emerald Drive. For hours and directions, call 905-775-3461 or visit greatgulf.com.

As we round the corner to the holiday season, preparations are underway across York Region by families who enjoy celebrating their cultures and religions in their own special ways. A microcosm of the multiculturalism that permeates the Canadian landscape, the Region of York embraces a population that represents a multitude of backgrounds. Statistics Canada’s 2001 Census shows the following among the top-ve non-ocial home languages in York and its nine municipalities: Cantonese, Chinese, Mandarin, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Persian (Farsi), Korean, Polish, Tamil, Punjabi, Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Khmer (Cambodian) and Greek.
By 2006, the Census indicated that there were more than 200 distinct ethnic groups identied in York. e population had grown by 22 per cent, with immigrants accounting for nearly half of that growth. According to data from the 2011 Census, York Region is growing faster than any other area in the GTA, and is the third-fastest growing census division in Canada. Between 2006 and 2011, 140,000 more people had moved in.
In the publication Community Portraits: Immigrants Living in York Region – Women, Youth, Seniors, and Francophones (developed under the leadership of e Regional Municipality of York and with the support of the Community Partnership Council), I found the following statement fascinating: “It is estimated that by 2031, 55 per cent of the Region’s population will be immigrants and 62 per cent will be visible minorities.”
One of the best things about living in a multicultural area is being exposed to the sights, sounds, textures, and especially the tastes and aromas that characterize people’s holiday traditions. I’m of Italian ancestry, and over the years, we have celebrated Christmas with a traditional tree and wonderful meals topped o by pizzelles – wae-like cookies tinged with anise. ere’s nothing like the scents of fresh pine and anise wafting in the air to bring to mind the holiday seasons of my youth. Many Italians also enjoy the fabulous fruited sponge cake panettone and a variety of sh dishes, especially on Christmas Eve.
ere are many other religious and cultural celebrations held during the month of December, and even before. Finns love the Christmas season so much, they start in November with pre-Christmas gatherings called Pikkujoulu. Ham served with mustard or bread, casseroles with liver and raisins, rice pudding with fruit and a traditional drink called glögi (a spiced, mulled beverage that can be served with or without alcohol) are popular at these celebrations.
Dutch families may begin Christmas day with brunch that features kerststol, a fruited loaf, slathered with butter. e menu often
includes smoked salmon, fancy rolls and patés. Dinner might include anything from roast pork and game meats to fun gourmet fondues (called gourmetten), during which guests cook bite-sized pieces of meat and vegetables over a central grill. Common desserts on this day are marzipan, speculaas (spiced cookies) and aky Jan Hagel cookies.
From December 26 through January 1,
African Americans celebrate Kwanzaa – a non-religious holiday that began in 1966 to honour ancient traditions and progressive social change. On December 31, families hold feasts consisting of dishes with sesame seeds, peanuts, collard greens, yams, sh patties, black-eyed peas, Jollof rice and spicy sauces, reminiscent of the harvests that have nourished Africans for centuries. I attended a Kwanzaa-inspired dinner and was
captivated by the mouth-watering avours and tempting aromas of the magnicent dishes.
For Greek people, Christmas is about faith and traditional food. If you’ve ever had sesame baklava, which Greeks often make on Christmas Eve, you know that this is a people who love their sweets! Savoury meals may feature stued cabbage, egg-lemon chicken soup, roasted pork, tzatziki, feta, tsipouro brandy and white or rosé wine.
ose of Hungarian descent in York Region likely enjoy sh soup, stued cabbage, sh and rice, and gingerbread cookies during the Christmas season. On Christmas Eve, many observe the tradition of baking sweet szaloncukor (chocolate-covered fondant wrapped in foil) and hanging them on the tree. eir night-before-Christmas meal usually involves sh and cabbage and poppy seed and walnut rolls called beigli.
Portuguese people also tend to celebrate Christmas on its Eve, with a meal highlighted by codsh with green vegetables, boiled potatoes, shellsh, wild meats, fried cookies, nuts, and goat, lamb or turkey. As with all countries, there are regional favourites, so Portuguese Christmas meals may also include rice pudding and lhós (fried dough sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon). ere may also be a fun cake called “Bolo Rei” in which a tiny gift and a broad bean are hidden in it. e diner who gets the gift can keep it, but the one who gets the bean has to pay for next year’s Bolo Rei.
In both France and Vietnam, Christmas Eve brings with it a meal that ends with a bûche de Noël (chocolate cake shaped like a log) for desert. ose of Polish origin or descent celebrate Christmas Eve with a special meal called Wigilia, which may include beetroot soup, pierogi, mushroom ravioli and sh. During the eight days of Hanukkah, potato pancakes called latkes, jelly doughnuts and fritters line Jewish families’ tables. I have enjoyed Hanukkah meals with friends, and the food is delightful.
And the list goes on… is article includes but a few examples of
the delicacies and festivities of York Region’s multicultural population. November and December feature many other multicultural events and celebrations. Each brings with it special traditions and foods.
Being Italian, I tend to look at everything from a food perspective, but these meals are about something even more important. What they all have in common is the gathering together of family and friends to celebrate life. And when you live in York Region, you have a lot to celebrate during the holiday season, and all year long.
