How to survive show businessthose dreams a reality. Thisteam includes ones parents or
guardians, other family mem-bers such as siblings andcousins, coaches and trainers(vocal coaches, acting coachesand personal trainers), spiritualguide (either a religious personlike a priest or pastor, or a lifecoach for those less religiouslyinclined), and a publicist. Thesartorially challenged may also
want a stylist on call.Sycophants should not be a
part of your team; people likethese will lead to your down-
fall. Keep the yes-men far, farawaythose who will latch on-to you only for either a handoutor a leg up, without your wel-fare in mind. They will also ren-der your psyche unhealthy be-cause, as in life, you cant al-
ways be hearing the word yes.And surely, with their kindaround you, not all of yourmoves will be the right ones.
Mental fortitudeThis is something that not
only you, but also everyone inyour inner circle should have. Idiscussed this at length in a pre-
vious column, but it bears repe-tition in the context of this one.
Young artists can be very vul-nerable in the face of persistenttemptations (drugs, alcohol, sex). That is a given. What isntalways mentioned is that the
very people surrounding anartist could also fall prey tothese temptations. When they
do, the artist could rightly utter
By Lea Salonga
LIKE everyGlee fan everywhere, I was heartbro-ken upon receiving the news that one of itsstars, Cory Monteith (footballer-turned-glee club
member Finn Hudson) was found dead in a Vancouverhotel room. He was only 31 years old.
I dare not speculate on thecause of his death since, atpress time, medical examinershavent yet completed their in-
vestigation. I send my condo-lences and prayers to his family,as well as to his Glee family andfriends. It cannot be easy losinga key player, one of the manypairs of shoulders upon whichthe success of this televisionshow rests.
It is never ever easy hearingabout a show biz denizenspassing, but its far more of ashock when its someone very
youngfor instance, HeathLedger, Amy Winehouse, BradRenfro and, from our ownshores, Alfie Anido, Teddy Di-az, Julie Vega, Rico Yan,
Marky Cielo and AJ Perez. The one thing these stars
had in common was a crossingover to the next life at a very
young agein their prime, be-fore their careers had reachedtheir presumed peaks.
If you look at the list Ive justmade, the causes and circum-stances of the deaths widely dif-fered. Some were forcibly takenaway by another persons hand, others by a cruel twist of fate.
As one who began in this
business at a ridiculously youngage, I feel extremely fortunatethat my own career has lastedfor as long as it has. Im also
very blessed to have such a sup-portive family (my in-laws in-cluded), one that I know willremain in my corner until theend of my days.
Not everyone is as lucky. Ihave colleagues who have totough it out on their own, rely-ing upon only a handful oftrusted comrades to see themfrom one day to the next. Thatis, if the comrade is truly trust-
worthy and has only the starsbest interests at heart.
For all its glitz and glamour, show business is a very difficultindustry to navigate and survive
in, but certainly not impossibleto figure out. There truly is nosecret to ones thriving withinit, but there are a few thingsthat do help in maintainingones standing and sanity.
Support systemA well-put together support
system is at the top of my list, for obvious reasons: When youhave family and friends whosupport you and your dreams,
you are pushed and encouraged
in all the right ways to make
a very sad, Woe is me!Thus, I feel sorry for the
Lindsay Lohans of the world;her parents land in the tabloidsalmost as often as she does,
which should never be the case. When I encounter such a par-ent, I appreciate my mother allthe more for everything shesdone for me.
Sense of humorIf theres anything that regu-
lar viewers of The Voice of thePhilippines are growing moreand more familiar with, its my
very loud and very presentcackle. My friends all knowabout this, and are thrilled thatthe rest of the country is nowgetting to hear it.
There is a lot that goes on inshow business that I could de-scribe as ridiculous. For instance,
the fact that two stars will some-times be required to do a love
scene just minutes after sayingto one another, Its so nice tomeet you, Im a huge fan of your
work! Or, two best friends offscreen having to engage in ashouting match complete withhair pulling and dress ripping ontelevision? Where else on thisgood earth do things like thesehappen? Only in show business.
There isnt very much in thisindustry to take too seriously.Of course the art must be treat-ed with respect, love and edu-
cation. But the rest of it? Thefriendships, the long hours, thescandals, the intrigues, the fans, the rivalries ... all of it? Keep asnicker and a giggle handy,
youre going to need it.

NAGULAT ang basket-ball community nangbigla na lamang sum-abog ang balita aboutthree days ago nanag-resign as GinebraSan Miguel head-coach si AlfrancisChua after bringing

Siyempre, sa mgaganitong sitwasyon, maraming umikot nabulong-bulongan atspekulasyon.
Kesyo hindi dawnagustuhan niChualay ang pagbala-balasa sa kanyangcoaching staff withoutconsulting with him
first, kesyo hin-di daw maka-sundo ng long-haired coachang isang high-ranking SMCofficial namalakas samga bosing ng

Well, nagdaan angmahigit na 24 oras af-

pa ring balita kungano ang naging resul-ta nito. Sabi ng isangPBA official, mala-mang daw nanakumbinsi ni Mr.

with SMC in whatev-er capacity -head-coach, consultant orassistant.

was his first as Ginebracoach.
Pero alam namanng lahat na talagangganito ang sistema saSan Miguel. Continu-ous ang rigodon, takeit or leave it. Look atthe positive side, hin-di ka mawawalan ngtrabaho.
