Why Do Samples NOT Digest?
• Method – Acid mixture and acid volume is not correct for sample
type
– Digestion temperature is incorrect
– Ramp and hold times not appropriate for sample
• Operation
– Wrong type of vessel is selected
– Incorrect vessel assembly
– Not enough microwave power for the number of vessels
What went
wrong?

The Discover Platform only Requires
• Single 120V Power
• Air Supply – Typically House Air
• Somewhere to vent exhaust – hood or trunk
line
• No need for special chillers, compressed
gases or multiple 208V lines
Temperature & Pressure Control
Infra-Red Temperature Control
• Provides Temperature Control of Every Sample
– Mix all types of organic and inorganic sample types
– Works with Pyrex & Quartz Vessels with or without
Teflon liners
ActiVent* Pressure Control
• Venting is active not passive as in batch systems
• Three preset venting options based on sample type
• Inorganic samples typically do not vent
ActiVent Technology
Advanced Pressure Management
The Effect of Simultaneous Cooling
• Cooling gas flow regulated
through system software
• Temperature feedback control
maximizes input microwave
power
• Typically allows a 5 fold
increase in microwave power
input speeding digestions and
lowering vapor pressure. The
cooling gas also rapidly cools
vessels at end of run
Cooling Gas

The Fastest Closed Vessel Preparation
Digestion Parameters
• A good starting point for digestions is a
4 minute ramp to 200oC with a 3 minute
hold
• Initial target temperature should be 200oC
for most organic samples
• Inorganic samples will usually require a
higher temperature
• The maximum temperature should not
exceed 240oC

When to Consider Automated Sequential Microwave Digestion
Workflow
• Many different sample types in your laboratory
• Work flow brings in a few samples at a time – several times
per day
• Rush samples are typical in daily routine
– Sample complete in ten minutes including cool down
• Work flow allows benefits from overnight sample prep
– Have up to 36 samples ready when arrive in morning
• Once you load auto sampler you are free to do other tasks
the rest of the day
When to Consider Automated Sequential Microwave Digestion
Best Applications
• Pharmaceutical – documentation of every sample, works
great with raw materials, intermediates, finished products
• Plant, Fish and Animal Tissues of all Types
• Food materials – can do all types with varied acids
necessary for complete digests
• Feeds and Grains
• Biological Materials
• Environmental samples
• Oils and Plastics (less than 240C)
• Inorganics (requiring little HF and less than 240C)
When to Consider Automated Sequential Microwave Digestion
Simplicity
• Smallest footprint of any microwave digestion system
• Only system that does not require a 208/230 volt outlet
• Easiest vessel assembly available (snap the cap)
• Documents run condition of every individual sample
• If you need the capabilities of microwave digestion but
only have a few samples per day or week
When to Consider Batch Microwave Digestion
Total Versatility
• Lots of a few type sample types where 40 sample throughput has an
advantage
– Typical of many commercial testing & Government labs that
support environmental, pharmaceutical or agricultural communities
(need highest throughput available)
• Organic samples that require greater than 0.5 grams or temps greater
than 240C
– Aromatics and brominated hydrocarbons for example need higher
temps to completely digest.
• Inorganic refractories requiring higher temps or generous amounts of
HF
• Labs requiring combination of high throughput and high temps.
