PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Welcome back to another
great term at Duval High
School!
Firstly, I must add my
sincere congratulations
to Maddie McFadyen of
Year 12 for being
nominated in ‘Callback
2016’ for her Dance Major
Study Composition. Even
being nominated for this
is a huge honour, and
recognises the outstanding nature of Maddie’s
work. Congratulations also to Maddie’s Dance
teachers, Miss Petherbridge and Miss Noonan.
Term 4 is certainly going to be a hectic one.
Apart from the usual teaching and learning, our
students will be involved in the following over
the next five weeks: -
Year 10 and 11 Aboriginal Health
presentation,
Schools Spectacular Combined Rehearsal
in Tamworth for our singers, dancers and
musicians,
Year 9-11 Skills and Thrills Careers
Showcase at the Belgrave Cinema,
Our annual Year 6 into 7 Orientation Day
(Thursday 3 November), supported by Ms
Cotton, the Transition Team, and the Year 9
Peer Leaders, as well as
Year 8 VALID Science investigations.
However, the main event on everyone’s mind is
the HSC examinations which commence this
Thursday 13 October, and conclude on Friday 4
November. This year, for the first time, our
students will be sitting most of their exams at an
external venue (Wright Centre, University of
New England), in order to minimise distractions
and interruptions for the candidates. We wish all
of our Year 12 students, their parents and
families, and our hard-working staff the best of
luck in the exams!
Mr Stafford Cameron
FROM THE DP DESK
It's starting to feel a lot
like Spring! While there
are still a few jumpers
around, most of them are
the correct uniform,
which looks great.
However, we do have a
number of students who
are not in uniform and
need to be.
Please support Duval
High School by insisting
that your children leave the house not just with
the right equipment for each lesson and plenty
of food to fuel their bodies and minds for the
day, but also in correct uniform, totally prepared
for a positive and successful day.
Uniforms help students focus on belonging to
our school, and assist kids to get into the
studious mindset required for academic success.
Wearing the uniform with pride is a reflection of
genuine student commitment to doing well at
school.
Thank you for assisting us to keep our kids in
uniform. If you need help with any aspect of
uniform, don't hesitate to contact us.
Mrs Sandra Rosner
P&C NEWS
Duval High School P&C is pleased to announce
our participation in Regional Australia Bank’s
Community Partnership Program. This year the
RAB donated an extra $631.00 into our account
under this programme. Thank you to all who
supported the P&C in this way.
All you need is an eFree, Community
Partnership, or Youth Account at the RAB, and
then nominate to support the P&C. The bank
calculates the average annual balance of our
supporters, and then donates the equivalent of
1%.
Please contact the local RAB to register your
account and raise funds for our school.

YEAR 7 ENGLISH
Year 7 English are enjoying the Drama text,
Honey Spot, by the wonderful Australian
playwright, Jack Davis. The play explores themes
of cultural diversity, inclusion and reconciliation.
Students are working together on performances
that illustrate these themes. They also enjoyed
some home-made honey-themed treats as they
learnt their lines.

YEAR 8 HISTORY
Year 8 students are currently studying Viking
warfare and weaponry in History. The Vikings
fought with swords, axes, spears and bow and
arrows. Viking warriors wore helmets made from
either leather or iron to protect themselves. It is a
myth that Viking helmets had two horns on top -
this was not the case.
Well done to our talented students on their
detailed displays!

SAILING ON STS YOUNG ENDEAVOUR
Last year I went on board the
tall ship STS Young Endeavour
with my friend CDTLS Emily
Barham from TS Rushcutter. We
circumnavigated Australia,
starting from Sydney and
ending in Sydney. Going on the
Young Endeavour was terrifying
as well as exciting. However,
this was not the first time I had
been on a tall ship. I had
previously sailed on the STS
South Passage in late 2014, and
the TS Royalist (of the UK Sea
Cadet Corps) in 2010. I have to
say that circumnavigating
Australia is by far my greatest
memory of sail training.
I was also fortunate to be part of the youth crew
during the international tall ships race. STS South
Passage had been knocked out in the first leg of
the race. It was a good thing I chose to go on the
Young Endeavour! There were four ships left in
the final leg of the race, including the Young
Endeavour.
The Young Endeavour was in the lead for the first
few hundred metres before the Royalist managed
the catch up. By this stage there was a severe
storm brewing, so we broke out the storm sails to
give us a bit of extra speed. We were now neck-
and-neck with the Royalist, but the Young
Endeavour came through at the last possible
moment.
We only narrowly beat the Royalist, but we did it!
The crew and I were welcomed back to the Fleet
Base East to an uproar of congratulations from the
Navy personnel. We were commended on our
remarkable feat of courage and teamwork.
If I was ever given
another chance to go
on board the Young
Endeavour, I would
definitely apply. It
w a s a g r e a t
experience that I will
forever treasure!

HOCKEYROO GEORGIE MORGAN
On Tuesday 13th
September, students
at Duval High School
were privileged with
a visit from former
DHS Sports Captain
and now Olympic
Hockeyroo, Georgie
Morgan.
Georgie, who was in
town for a bit of R & R
after the Hockeyroos
Olympic campaign,
surprised students
with a brief recap of what it was like being an
Olympian in Rio. She also spent time fielding
questions from students. During one of her
answers, Georgie confirmed reading an email
from two Year 8 students while in Brazil.
Georgie presented to the school an Australian
Training Jersey signed by the entire Rio
Olympics Hockeyroo team, before taking some
time to provide autographs and take some selfies
with students.
Upon leaving Georgie was very appreciative of
the level of respect and interest shown by
students and felt very humbled to come back to
her old stomping ground.

NOMINATION OF MADDI’S HSC
DANCE
Congratulations to Maddison
McFadyen on receiving a
Callback nomination for her
Major Composition in HSC
Dance. Callback is the showcase
of exemplary Dance works from
the HSC, and is used to inform
and inspire future Dance students
and their teachers.
Maddi and her three dancers (Georgia Vaughan
in Year 9, and two students from other New
England Schools) must now film the work and go
through an audition process to be selected for the
showcase, held at the Seymour Centre in Sydney.
Congratulations and good luck to Maddi and the
dancers!
Miss Noonan
DUVAL MUSICIANS ON EUROPEAN
TOUR
Sarah-Kate Sowden (Year 10), Luke Logan-Clarke
(Year 11) and Nyah Golding Fussell (Year 11)
have just returned from a European tour with the
Department of Education’s West of the Divide
ensemble.
As well as performing, the ensemble undertook
master classes and workshops with renowned
conductors at musical meccas such as Salzburg’s
Mozarteum, Vienna’s Wiener Konzerthaus and
the Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre.
They immersed themselves in amazing acoustics
as they performed in Matthias Church, Budapest,
performed with Czech student musicians in the
14th Century Church of St Havel, jammed with
jazz musicians on one of Prague’s famous River
Vltava jazz boats, and entertained with an
impromptu recital in the 900-year-old
Benedictine Abbey church at Melk.
As well as this, students had the opportunity to
enjoy the opera La Traviatta in the ornate Prague
National Theatre and walk in the footsteps of The
Sound of Music.
The tour was a further opportunity to enrich the
talents of the outstanding musicians and singers,
taking their local regional and state experiences
to an international level.
The West of the Divide Stage Band and Choir were
under the baton of highly experienced musical
director Di Hall from Tamworth. The tour and its
preparation was coordinated by the thoroughly
dedicated Di Reichelt, Dubbo, and Di Alexander,
Wagga Wagga.

YEAR 12 CARNIVAL
& END-OF-SCHOOL
PRANKS
The Year 12 Carnival was a huge
success!! The tie-dying and the
sausage sizzle sold out. There
was a good crowd watching John-
ny Schmalz and the NEMAS en-
gaging in medieval combat. Fac-
es were painted, as were hands
(with henna), cupcakes galore
were on sale—a perfect compan-
ion to the milkshakes. The obsta-
cle course, photo booth and noo-
dle jousting had a steady stream
of participants. AND, there were
many in Room 104 playing Magic
The Gathering. It was fantastic!!
Much money was raised for chari-
ty. Great work Year 12.
