Contrasting Human Perceptions About Global Warming
● Many perceptions regarding to global warming and other environmental issues
● The term ‘Value System’ is sometimes used to describe the package of views that individuals hold
● LEDC’s awareness of global warming is low (poor countries, Less Economically Developed Country)
● MEDC’s awareness of global warming is higher (richer countries, More Economically Developed Country)
● There are 2 main beliefs involving global warming- Ecocentric- Technocentric
Ecocentric Views on Global warming
● Ecocentric (nature-centered) - having serious concerns for the environment issues around the world
● Ecocentric want to stop factories that pass out pollution in the air. ● Want to limit use of resources ● Believe that local and individual actions can make a difference
-For example, such as recycling● Human population should decrease so that humans can use less of the
Earth's resources ● Consider life as valuable and
not use for humans
Ecocentric Views on Global Warming
● Believe they want to take every resource downthat is hurting the environment ● Ecocentrics want people to change their
minds by the awareness that is occurring in the environment and what they can do to help the environment ● Want to stop the resources that is killing the
world HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT
Technocentric Views on Global warming
● Technocentric - human-centred, humans are dependant on nature but nature is there to benefit humankind.
● Tend to look for a technical fix● There will always be more resources to exploit● They can solve any pollution problem that they cause● They believe that humans are more important than the earth, that is why
they should use all the resources they have
Technocentric Perspective● Technocentrics have absolute faith in technology and industry and firmly
believe that humans have control over nature. ● Technocentrics may accept that environmental problems exist, they do not
see them as problems to be solved by a reduction in industry.● Technocentrism may also refer to a worldview that revolves around
technology.● Rather, environmental problems are seen as problems to be solved using
science and technology
Technocentric Views
What we do, we can fix it.
Technology can solve anything!
